Chapter 11: Who Are You

The lights in the operating theater finally went out. Almost at the same time, Gwyn stood up from his seat.
Gwyn arranged for David to help take care of and examine Quintana, but Gwyn insisted on sitting at the door of the operating room, even though he knew that he was of no help.
He kept crossing his hands to hide his anxiety. Gwyn didn’t know if Mary would survive the operation.
Gerri walked out of the operating room with a tired face. He felt helpless when he saw the worried expression on his brother’s face.
This brother of his was as cold as the ruler of Hell. Although they were only a few years apart, Gerri had been afraid of Gwyn since young.
Gwyn was cold to everyone, even to his parents, so Gerri didn’t expect him to fall for Mary.
“Mary is alright. She has multiple bruises on her body and the broken fragments on her back were not deeply inserted. They have already been removed during the surgery,” Gerri answered preemptively before Gwyn could inquire.
“It’s just that her head was hit, so there might be some after-effects.”
Gerri’s words made Gwyn’s heart skip a beat. “What are the side effects?”
“It’s difficult to determine at the moment. In my experience, there may be a stress response or temporary amnesia. We’ll need to wait until she regains consciousness. However, we can attribute this fortunate outcome to Mary. From the evidence at the scene, the driver’s injuries shouldn’t have been as severe. Mary probably took the hit to protect her mother. Otherwise, her mother’s condition could have been much worse.”
Gerri was deeply grateful to Mary. In such circumstances, the driver would typically try to protect themselves, but Mary prioritized Quintana’s safety. If Mary had not been so determined to protect Quintana, she would not have sustained such severe injuries.
For a moment, Gwyn felt as if something was stuck in his throat, and his chest felt stuffy.
He had thought that Mary was just putting on an act with him and that her friendliness towards Quintana and her family was only temporary. He did not expect her to do so to save Quintana.
Gwyn’s heart sank when he saw Mary lying on the bed with a pale face.
It had been six hours, but Mary showed no signs of waking up.
“Buzz.” His phone rang. Gwyn only got up and left when he saw that it was Will who called him.
“Sir, we have received that person. What about the other two?”
“Detain them first and investigate their background. Don’t hurt them now.” Since they were working with Mary, he believed that they could be trusted.
However, Gwyn wasn’t the type to trust people easily, so he had to confirm it himself.
“What about Bob?” Will asked, knowing that Bob was a tricky person to deal with, especially since he knew that Mary was interested in him. If he did anything out of line, it might cause trouble for Gwyn.
“As long as he’s not killed, it’s fine,” Gwyn replied with a fierce expression. He never showed mercy to his opponents.
Even if Mary pleaded for him this time, he wouldn’t easily let Bob go.
David took a step back when he saw Gwyn’s expression at the door of the hospital room. No wonder Gerri insisted on bringing him here. Even though David had known Gwyn since childhood, he was still afraid when he saw her like this.
“You’re here.” Gwyn’s expression softened when she saw David.
“Yes, I came to see how Mary is doing.” The two walked into the hospital room one after the other and looked at Mary, who showed no signs of waking up. David furrowed his brows.
“Did Gerri say she might have amnesia and complications? Is that true? Will she not remember me?” Gwyn’s heart ached at the thought of Mary possibly waking up and not recognizing him.
“Gerri said ‘possibly’, so it’s just a possibility,” David replied, secretly disapproving of Gwyn’s intelligence when it came to matters of love.
“So, when she wakes up, she won’t remember me? Will she be able to recover her memory?” Gwyn asked again.
Looking at the worry in Gwyn’s eyes, David wished he could beat him up and make him lose his memory.
“What does ‘possibly’ mean? Are you stupid, Gwyn?”
Gwyn covered David’s mouth. “Shh! Keep your voice down.”
“Oh, it hurts.” A weak voice sounded from the hospital bed.
Gwyn quickly ran over and gently held Mary’s hand. “Mary, are you okay? Do you feel any pain?” David, come over and take a look. Mary says she’s in pain.”
Just as he turned around, eager to get David to come over, Mary, lying on the bed, suddenly asked in a low voice, “Who are you?”
