An hour later, Xiao Yu had eventually completed the task of collecting the adder’s tongues. In addition to the two items he had gotten, he had also gained a lot of experience points. Because he didn’t have enough money to buy his way back to the town, Xiao Yu had no choice but to go back using the same path he used to get there. He felt quite troubled when he thought of the narrow passage he had to pass through again. There was nothing he could do, so he had no choice but to fight his way through.
Arriving before the narrow passage, Xiao Yu saw five lost spirits standing shoulder to shoulder on the path, leaving only a narrow gap between them. He judged that the gap was at most 30 centimeters wide. He wondered how he had passed through such a narrow gap last time.
Xiao Yu approached the narrow gap slowly and carefully while waiting for the white haze to drift over.
Gradually, the place became covered in the white fog, and visibility was reduced significantly. This was a window of opportunity for him to pass through. Xiao Yu bent down and entered the stealth travel state while approaching the narrow passage.
The five lost spirits hadn’t changed their positions at all because they had a very small area to maneuver. Xiao Yu turned his body sideways and passed through the narrow gap.
“Huh!” Xiao Yu was startled. He was fully aware that he had touched one of the lost spirits when he passed them. Looking around, Xiao Yu found that all the lost spirits fixed their gazes on him. It seemed that these monsters were surprised to find a human who had suddenly appeared in the midst of them.
“Oh, no. I’m finished.” His stealth travel was over since he bumped into a monster. As such, he was fully seen by all the lost spirits. Worst of all, he happened to be surrounded by the lost spirits and had nowhere to go.
“Water will choke a person who is drinking it if they are down on luck! But I still have to try everything I’ve got.” Taking advantage of the hesitation of these lost spirits, Xiao Yu darted outside the valley along the path as quickly as his legs could carry him. He thought he might have a chance to survive if he ran fast enough.
Whoosh!!! Whoosh!!! Whoosh!!!
He brushed past several lost spirits in a row.
It was then that these beasts came back to their senses, and all of them charged after him.
Seeing the claws of the lost spirits bearing down on him, Xiao Yu had no choice but to bear the attacks in order to maintain the pace of his escape. As such, he was sprinting as fast as he could toward the outside of the valley.
The damage value points were emerging from his head one after the other. If he hadn’t changed his defense items or leveled up, he would have been knocked down to the ground.
One lost spirit was charging toward Xiao Yu. He took a step back after looking at the positions of the other beasts and launched a reversed backstab. As the snake-tooth dagger in his hand hit the back of the lost spirit, he took the opportunity to come around behind the lost spirit and evaded the other charging lost spirits.
Xiao Yu didn’t dare to linger around for an instant. He ran as fast as he could. After checking his health, he found it stood at 37%.
Xiao Yu was using all the abilities he had to evade the attacks of the monsters, jumping side to side and leaping up and down. Seeing the claw of a lost spirit bearing down on him, Xiao Yu quickly pulled his abdomen back to dodge the attack. The claw of the beast brushed past his stomach, from which he could sense cold, murderous intent.
He couldn’t even figure out why he could use some of the moves and skills.
A sharp claw struck his back.
With a grunt, Xiao Yu staggered a few steps forward because of the powerful strike from the monster. Then, he turned his body sideways to dodge a monster that was charging at him.
Whoosh!!!
Xiao Yu ran past the narrow passage. He turned around and slashed his dagger on the body of a lost spirit.
Speed -1.
The pursuing lost spirit slowed down a little and blocked the other pursuing monsters behind it. This offered an opportunity for Xiao Yu to escape.
He didn’t linger around after he struck that monster. He ran away with all his might. He could run at a fairly fast pace because of his high abilities. He disappeared from the scene in the blink of an eye.
He ran a long distance and then spun his head around. He let out a long exhale when he found that the lost spirits were not catching up to him. The lost spirits went back to their original site after they chased him for a while and lost him.
“It’s my fate to survive, I guess. Otherwise, I would have been finished.”
Xiao Yu checked his health and found it stood at 13%, meaning he could still withstand one more attack. He had been prepared for the consequences. He would drink an instant health potion should he be attacked again. Fortunately, he still had a bit of health left, and the instant health potion could be saved for another time.
He was headed for the small town of Tabarka as he was reviewing the task. This was a task specifically programmed for thieves, and it had all the features for a thief. While completing the task, Xiao Yu had gradually comprehended the essence of the profession of thievery. This was a profession where one often lived a life on the edge. One’s life was always in danger. This was determined by the profession of thievery and the tasks thieves took.
As a thief, one had to possess a calm temperament and a cool mind when facing these dangers. Accordingly, he thought he had behaved poorly in this aspect and that he had almost exposed himself a few times due to his nervousness. Of course, it was inevitable that he felt nervous in a dire situation because he didn’t hail from an elite special force. As such, it was understandable that he didn’t possess a strong mental ability.
“I must learn how to stay calm!” Xiao Yu was aware that this quality was very important and that he needed some more time to develop this ability.
According to Thief Teacher Ode, lower his level, the higher his reward would be. He was not eager to level up yet and so headed back to Tabarka.
Xiao Yu found Thief Teacher Ode again in that small rundown house.
“You have already completed the task?” asked Ode in surprise when he saw the 20 adder’s tongues turned in by Xiao Yu.
“Yes,” replied Xiao Yu. He was more interested in what reward he would get at the moment.
“You surprised me. As of today, 17 thieves received that task from me; but all of them opted to give it up. You’re the only one who has come back after completing the task,” said the Thief Teacher Ode appreciatively.
Thief Teacher Ode showed no intention of giving him the reward right away, even though Xiao Yu was very anxious to find out.
“Now that you have accomplished the first task, you’re qualified to carry out the next one. The next task requires level-6 stealth travel and for you to be level 15 in general. When you come to me by that time, I’ll tell you the contents of the task,” said Thief Teacher Ode lightly.
Xiao Yu almost had a nervous breakdown, saying, “Will… I get a reward after completing this next task?”
“Oh,” exclaimed the Thief Teacher Ode after patting on his forehead, “I almost forgot about that.”
Xiao Yu felt like vomiting blood when he heard this. He had the urge to strangle Ode.
