Chapter 50 A Contract with Prince Ba Luo
Flames continued to congregate around Ronghua’s hand. She just wanted to scare them off with a head-on blow to their confidence.
“But what is happening now?” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua could see clearly that the wolves did not leave. Instead, they had just loosened their cordon, with their eyes still fixed on her from around 30 meters away. “Are they planning for a prolonged fight with me?” thought Ronghua.
Had Ronghua not been with Rongnuan, she would have decided to go with the wolves’ plan. But it was different this time. Rongnuan’s body could not wait.
When Ronghua first diagnosed Rongnuan’s body, she had already noticed that the energy in Rongnuan was much exhausted after so many years of suffering. If she could not catch this fleeting chance to find the medicinal herbs for the soul-restoring pill and help Rongnuan to cultivate, he would die.
“And that would mean I can’t keep my promise,” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua picked off a leaf from the tree, and with a bit of her spiritual power, she threw that leaf quietly to the alpha wolf.
Though it was dark, with its sharp senses, the alpha dodged the leaf right away. “Of course, that comes from the humans hiding on the tree,” it thought, “They think they could get away with it, but no. I will be waiting right here to catch them when they come down.”
Ronghua noticed that she had attracted the alpha’s attention. The alpha had also jumped back a bit when dodging the leaf, making room for her to set up a protective barrier. With a snap of her finger, Ronghua summoned the fire of nothingness to surround the tree in a circle, forming a layer of protection. The fire also shed light on its surroundings, making them visible to Ronghua.
The alpha awaited in silence, “…”
Ronghua tried to communicate with the alpha in their language, though she didn’t know if she could make it clear, and said, “I want to talk.”
The alpha was stunned, apparently by the fact that he had understood what Ronghua was saying. It clenched its paws so hard that it dug up a few specks of soil. With an increasingly grim look on its face, it replied, “You can speak our language.”
Upon receiving the reply, Ronghua amazed at the merits of the common tongue. She then replied, “Don’t be so courteous, I know a lot more than your language.”
The alpha jumped out and landed heavily somewhere away from the fire, smashing a big dent into the ground. It snarled, “Despicable human!”
Ronghua, “…” “What is wrong with you? Boasting about myself would elicit so much hatred?” thought Ronghua.
“But let’s go back to business,” thought Ronghua. She then replied, “Could you tell me why is your pack surrounding us? We haven’t done anything!”
The alpha seemed enraged by Ronghua’s remark, and thundered, “Haven’t done anything? You’ve injured my son fatally, and if we haven’t act quickly, we couldn’t even retrieve his body!”
“Its son?” Ronghua thought about it for a second. “Wait, was that lone wolf she struck down its son? It will be troublesome if that is the case. But its right that they won’t be able to retrieve his body if they had not reacted so quickly,” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua asked, “How could you be so sure that it was us?”
It was not uncommon for Ronghua to deny the wrongs she had done.
Ronghua’s reply seemed to be within the alpha’s expectation. It then said, “I saw it through my son’s eyes, could that be wrong? Your scents were all around my son, and the villains’ traces led us right here. Now, do you understand why I am so sure?”
Ronghua’s heart hitched. “I was so careless! And that wolf memorized everything it saw?” thought Ronghua. Although Ronghua covered her face with a veil, her scent had sold her out. She then asked, “What do you want?” “Since it can’t be resolved, let’s do it in the simplest way,” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua thought that would be easy, and the alpha was equally straightforward in his reply. “Avenge my son’s death and kill you all,” it said.
Ronghua held up her forehead in embarrassment. “How could it be elected the alpha with an IQ like this?” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua remained calm and replied, “You can’t kill me.” “It won’t be standing there if it could,” thought Ronghua.
The alpha was astonished and began to howl. The rest of the pack soon joined the alpha in their roaring chorus. This was the pack’s baying after they were provoked. Ronghua cast a spell on Rongnuan’s auditory sense to block all the noises. “Fortunately, he is soundly asleep,” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua was a bit confused by the alpha wolf. “It is difficult,” she thought.
The alpha said, “Come down here and fight one-on-one!” “One-on-one? Sure!” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua left Rongnuan on the strong tree branches and jumped off with a sword.
The alpha wolf was surprised that Ronghua jumped down immediately. “Is she alright?” thought the alpha wolf.
In the darkness, though Ronghua could see everything clearly, she was a bit worried when she came increasingly close to the ground. This was the simplest way to go down while not letting them know that she could fly here. She stabbed her sword into the tree and used it as a buffer. Though this tactic did not stop her from falling, it did slow down the pace and landed her safely back on the ground.
Ronghua pointed her sword at the alpha and said, “Come on.” She knew that the alpha could see her actions clearly, so she did not mince her words.
The alpha wolf was surprised by Ronghua’s directness. It wanted to fight Ronghua, but the fire in front of it did not seem ordinary. It could already feel the intense heat in the distance, and yet again, one of the wolves was struck down by the flame.
“The tiny fireball she threw down put us in trouble, let alone this wall of flame!” thought the alpha wolf.
Ronghua noticed the alpha was anxious and knew exactly that its anxiety stemmed from the fire of nothingness. “That’s unsurprising. Everyone in the world is afraid of it except me,” thought Ronghua.
The alpha wolf growled, “Despicable human!”
Ronghua replied, “… Is this the only phrase you know?” “But of course, it has spent too much time in the mountains and don’t know how to negotiate,” thought Ronghua.
“Prove yourself worthy and remove this wall of flame. Then we can fight one-on-one,” said the alpha wolf.
Ronghua shook her head and moved her hands unnaturally. She said, “No. If I removed the wall of flame, I wouldn’t have a chance to fight one-on-one. And there is nothing you can do if I keep the firewall, but to wait. Yet, I am not sure…if your son can really wait for that long.”
Enraged, the alpha wolf just wanted to jump over the wall of flame and kill Ronghua. Ronghua was terrified by its grim look. “It’s not funny if I got bitten by those fangs. And I would like to enjoy my happy life for a bit longer,” thought Ronghua.
“You’ve hurt my son, made him lost all his cultivation by despicable means. He is now dying…” said the alpha wolf.
“That’s right. Why are guys here hunting us while your son is dying?” asked Ronghua. The alpha wolf was infuriated by that remark and stormed, “To revenge for my son!”
“So, they are here for revenge. But its son is still alive,” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua looked at the alpha and said, “I did not kill your son.”
The alpha said, “Lier!” The pack then howled in agreement.
Ronghua said, “…I’ve hurt your son, that’s true. But I definitely did not kill it.” Ronghua did hurt its son with the fire of nothingness, but she had also healed it, and it would not die for sure. “Unless…” thought Ronghua.
“You guys did not try to heal your alpha’s son. Is that right?” asked Ronghua.
The alpha wolf was stunned and asked, “What healing?”
Ronghua said, “… Did you guys just left it there to die?!” Her remark was accurate, for no one in the pack knew anything about healing.
The alpha wolf asked tentatively, “My son…” Ronghua smiled in complacency. Putting aside her sword, she replied, “Now, do you wanna talk?”
“It came to negotiate finally,” thought Ronghua. “How can I trust you?” asked the alpha wolf.
The alpha clearly distrusted Ronghua. Although it was uncommon to see a human with cultivation that high, they are just all bad.
“Oh!” Ronghua smiled with irony. “Do you have any other choice, aside from negotiating with me?” asked Ronghua.
The alpha wolf, “…” It was so angry, but it could not vent it off.
It went around in a circle anxiously. “What is it thinking about?” thought Ronghua.
Ronghua continued to stoke up the alpha’s anxiety, and said, “You can only trust me now. Only I can save your son.”
The alpha wolf, “…”
Ronghua stepped toward the wall of flame and said, “I think you should know this fire is powerful. If I wanted to do anything to your son, I would have done it already, and there is nothing you can do about it.”
The alpha was still struggling to make his decision. Ronghua smiled a little when she looked up and noticed Rongnuan was sleeping soundly.
“Have you made up your mind?” asked Ronghua, “This is a fleeting chance.”
At last, the alpha’s desire to save its son prevailed. It said, “You have my words.”
Ronghua sat down and pulled out a furnace, along with an array of medicinal herbs from the portal to her storage. “The Sun Herb, The Flower of Death’s King, Violet Lotus, The Flower of Void, Xueyan Herb, Briarwood Herb, Nightmare Cirrus, and Imperial Bloodweed; The Flower of Midnight dew, Golem’s blood, Sliver-leaf Chrysanthemum, The Fire-root Herb, Golden Bodhi Fruit, Ice-lid Herb, The Nine-lotus Ginseng. That’s all the materials I need,” thought Ronghua. She had an abundant supply of all the mentioned materials in her storage.
She purposely said those materials were rare to Rongnuan to prevent him from asking questions. It was originally planned that they would need to take a detour to find those herbs. But the appearance of the wolves had supplied her with an explanation to Rongnuan.
Ronghua threw all the materials into the furnace with a tongue of the fire of nothingness.
“Human!” the alpha wolf woke Ronghua from her meditation with a roar. The alpha had also brought the wolf Ronghua hurt before. Ronghua took a look at the wolf and thought, “They are really leaving it to die on its own!”
The wounds burnt by the fire of nothingness already started to fester, and its strong body was now consumed by death. “Ah! It would die for sure without a healing spell,” thought Ronghua.
The alpha wolf walked toward Ronghua and said, “When we were hurt in the past, warriors would be those who could recover on themselves.”
Ronghua, “…” She then thought, “And how many lives do you have to do that, warrior?”
The alpha wolf took a step forward and said, “This is my son, Ba Luo.”
Ronghua stretched out her hand and pulled Ba Luo toward her with spiritual power. Upon seeing its son went afloat and moved slowly toward the fire, the alpha wolf bellowed, “What are you doing!”
The alpha wolf dashed toward its son against the intense heat. Startled, Ronghua thought, “Is he trying to kill himself?”
With a snap of her finger, Ronghua put out the flame on the alpha’s landing ground and shouted, “Do you want to kill yourself?”
Noticing the flame went down, it crawled to its son and stared at Ronghua with a grim look. “What are you doing?” snarled the alpha wolf.
Annoyed, Ronghua asked, “Did you just tried to kill yourself? Do you have any idea of this fire?”
They were both angered and would not compromise.
The alpha wolf, after a while, calmed down a bit. Heavily breathing, the alpha asked, “Since you know how hot the flame is, why are you putting my son into it?”
“So, this is the reason,” thought Ronghua. She then asked, “Do you really think I am going to put your son into the flame? And don’t I have any control over my fire?” Ronghua turned around, trying to control her anger.
The alpha wolf peeked at the wall of flame with a missing corner, and replied with a heavy voice, “I am sorry. That was my misunderstanding.”
Trying to act normal with every effort, Ronghua opened her eyes and replied, “That’s ok, and now get out!” Her anger would erupt at any second with the alpha wolf standing behind her wall of flame.
Though unable to let go of its son, the alpha wolf stepped out of Ronghua’s wall of flame with reluctance. The fire went back burning once the alpha wolf stepped out. Ronghua looked at the injured wolf from above, and said, “Didn’t die, lucky you.”
Ronghua put all the materials into the flame. The ashes of the materials then scattered on Ba Luo’s body, healing its wounds gradually. Ronghua sat on her heel in front of Ba Luo, placing her hands on Ba Luo’s broken head. “Still alive. It’s lucky, and promising in cultivation,” thought Ronghua.
Ba Luo, still in a coma, had no idea what Ronghua was doing. Ronghua drew a magic circle with her hands. The magic circle then expanded itself on the ground and enveloped Ronghua and Ba Luo.
“With my blood and thy wills, I shall bound my fate with thou and share our ills! Contract completed!” chanted Ronghua.
To forge a bond via a contract was the most convenient way to heal the lone wolf. It was already lucky for the lone wolf to survive a hit by the fire of nothingness, and it would require her golden light to heal the wolf. But the golden light might be too strong a healing for some.
“Hence, the most reasonable method is to forge a bond via a contract and share the golden light. I could also get some additional help. Why not?” thought Ronghua.
The poor Ba Luo was looking to fight with Ronghua when it finally woke up. But it had lost its chance of doing that.
Suddenly, the furnace started to shook violently, suggesting a success.
