Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Come Prepared

Hearing the sound of the door opening, the man standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling window slowly turned around. His slender fingers were playing with the black pen in his hand. A pair of white rimless glasses sat on his tall nose bridge, making the handsome man appear gentler.
It had been two years since they last met, but Li Yuhuan’s face remained calm, “President Shen,”
Hearing her call him ‘President’, Shen Ang’s lips curved into a self-deprecating smile, “Yuhuan, must you call me that?”
“This is your company. What should I call you if not President Shen?”
“You can call me Shen Ang. Just like you used to,” he replied.
“The past is the past, and the present is the present,” Li Yuhuan rejected him tactfully. She wasn’t angry or resentful, but her response only upset the man. He stepped closer and said, “Yuhuan, you’ve been hiding from me for two years.”
“President Shen, I think you’ve misunderstood. I’m not hiding from you. If I were, I wouldn’t have come up to see you after knowing that this is your company,” Li Yuhuan didn’t show Shen Ang any expression. She didn’t like to be indecisive when it came to relationships. When it ended, it ended. She would never go back on her words.
Moreover… This man had left her when she was at the lowest point in her life, leaving her to fend for herself. Although she forgave him, his actions still broke the trust she had for him.
“I came up to see you,to thank President Shen for the opportunity. Also, I want to formally decline the offer to work with your company. You don’t have to waste your energy to get close to me. I am now a married woman, just like you,”
She was about to leave when Shen Ang suddenly said, “Yuhuan, I’ve already divorced Bai Lin,” He looked at her, affections displayed on his face, “Yuhuan,” he began, “I can’t forget you,”
Li Yuhuan couldn’t control the laugh that slipped through her lips. Anybody passing by the office entrance would have thought she was laughing at a funny joke, “Thank you for the sentiment, President Shen,” She looked at the time, noting that it was almost lunchtime, “I have an appointment at noon, so I’ll take my leave,”
As Li Yuhuan was about to open the door, Shen Ang strode over, closing the distance between them, and trapped her into his arms. He breathed in her the scent of her perfume. Shen Ang’s eyes darkened, and he couldn’t help himself. He buried his head in her neck and nipped her fair skin, “Yuhuan, I know that I’m still in your heart,”
Li Yuhuan’s stomach couldn’t help but churn when she felt his lips on her skin. It made her feel disgusted. With all her might, she pushed him off of her. “Shen Ang, I don’t accept second-hand goods!” She exclaimed, using his own words from four years ago to his face.
Li Yuhuan quickly left the office without waiting for his response or reaction.
…
She met up with Song Ran for lunch right after the meeting.
While they were eating, Song Ran noticed that Li Yuhuan had looked a little paler than usual, and there was a faraway look on her face like she was lost in her thoughts. “Yuhuan, what wrong? Are you feeling sick?” She asked with concern.
Li Yuhuan put down her chopsticks. Scorn quickly filled her eyes as she said, “I saw Shen Ang,”
“F*ck! That piece of trash still dares to see you?” Song Ran shouted, causing several people to turn and look in their direction. The feisty woman wanted to slam her table too but stopped herself and settled for rolling up her sleeves instead. Biting back from her anger, she seethed frustratedly, “Damn it! He has some nerve to see you!”
Li Yuhuan, despite her simmering anger, was much calmer, “There’s no need to be angry. It’s all in the past,”
“How can I not be angry!” Song Ran whisper-exclaimed, “Shen Ang dumped you when you were at your lowest, and then he married Bai Lin like he was rubbing salt on your wound. Does he have no shame? I would’ve given him a few hard slaps if I were you!”
Li Yuhuan listened silently and didn’t make any more comments about Shen Ang. Her friend’s angry rant somewhat comforted some part of her heart.
…
After lunch, Li Yuhuan returned to her apartment, and the first thing she did was go straight into the bathroom. She kept rubbing her skin, the spot he had touched her repeatedly. As if she wanted to tear it off her body.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the last time she saw him.
Shen Ang had obviously come prepared. He had somehow found her address, would drop by almost every night, and smoke a few cigarettes outside her apartment before finally leaving.
Li Yuhuan pretended not to see him. She continued to go for interviews during the day and submitted her resumé. She was busy editing the many works she decided to take from New York at night. Occasionally, she would go to the bar with Song Ran for a few drinks.
Time slowly passed, and another month flew by in a blink of an eye.
Li Yuhuan had just finished her interview and was ready to return home when Shen Ang stopped her outside, “Yuhuan, let’s talk,”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” Li Yuhuan replied, shaking his hand off her.
“I have a script in my hands, and you are the most suitable candidate. I know you, and I know that you will not mix your work with your personal feelings. So, Yuhuan, can you ignore my status as the president of Angfan and take a look at the script first? I only need 30 minutes,” Shen Ang pleaded, “Give me 30 minutes of your time, and I’ll leave after you finish reading the script.”
Li Yuhuan was unmoved, “You can send the script to my email. Since you know me so well, you should know I won’t leak your script to anybody else. If I deem it suitable, I will contact the person in charge,”
“Alright,” he said. Shen Ang knew Li Yuhuan had a deep prejudice against him, so he didn’t dare to push her too hard for now.
As long as she was still in Xiang City, he still had the chance to get her back.
