Meanwhile, Xia Yan stayed in the room for two more hours, getting hungry and thirsty. She searched the room but couldn’t find anything to eat or drink. Xia Yan couldn’t stand it any longer. She pushed the door open and was about to leave when someone appeared at the door.
It was a young girl who looked to be in her teens. She had two braids behind her head. “What can I do for you, Young Madam?”
“I’m getting hungry. Can you bring me something to eat?” Xia Yan rubbed her stomach and asked. The young girl looked at Xia Yan embarrassedly and then looked downstairs.
“Why don’t you tell me where the kitchen is? Then I can go and get something to eat myself,” Xia Yan continued. After all, she had just entered the Mo family residence and wasn’t familiar with the place. It would be inconvenient for her to search for food independently.
However, the little girl hurriedly shook her head as her two braids swayed non-stop. “N-No! Madam Mo has instructed you to stay in this room!”
Xia Yan was shocked as her eyebrows furrowed. “I can’t leave the room?”
“Yes! Madam Mo has told me that you are not allowed to leave this room from today onward.” The little girl dutifully revised Madam Mo’s orders.
Xia Yan became furious when she heard this. “I married into the Mo family! This isn’t a jail sentence!”
The little girl replied with a serious expression, “Madam Mo said that you’re not allowed to leave!”
Xia Yan grew angrier by the minute. Then her stomach started rumbling as she decided to solve her hunger before dealing with anything else. “Then can I trouble you to make some food for me?”
The little girl was hesitant to help. She looked at Xia Yan as if to confirm something. Xia Yan could tell at a glance why the little girl hesitated. She raised a hand and said, “I promise not to leave this room if you go and get me some food, okay?”
“Do you promise not to leave before I get back?” The little girl didn’t trust Xia Yan. The woman sighed and said helplessly, “I’m so hungry that I can barely walk. I can’t go anywhere even if I wanted to.”
The little girl pondered and then nodded. “Okay then! I’ll be back soon! Please go back into the room and wait, Young Madam!”
Xia Yan took a deep breath and gave the little girl a thumbs up. She took two steps backward and closed the door. She was worried that the little girl would be skeptical, so she shouted, “See?! I’m already in the room and can’t leave!”
But there was no response. Soon after, two light knocks sounded from the door.
“C-Come in!” Xia Yan said weakly. The door opened, and the little girl from before appeared. She placed the plate before Xia Yan and prepared to leave. Xia Yan looked at the plate and became angry. “Is the Mo family so poor that they can only serve their guests this little?”
There were only a few pieces of stale bread and some discolored sausages on the plate. The little girl looked at Xia Yan and said, “Madam Mo said you shouldn’t overeat since you just got married.”
“What?! That doesn’t mean you can serve me this kind of food!” Xia Yan frowned as her expression turned unsightly. Although she had eaten a lot of stale food when she lived with Xia family, she was now the young madam of the Mo family.
The little girl looked at the plate and walked toward Xia Yan. “If you’re not hungry, I will take this away,” The little girl said as she picked up the plate and prepared to leave.
Xia Yan gritted her teeth and snorted, “All right, fine! Bring me a glass of water!”
“Mhm,” The little girl replied and walked out of the room. Soon after, she returned with a glass of cold water and placed it before Xia Yan. The woman stared at the glass for a while when her stomach growled again. She picked up the glass and downed it in a single gulp.
Xia Yan almost got a brain freeze from chugging a glass of cold water. Her anger seemed to lessen after that. She put the cup aside and sized up the little girl before her. “What is your name?”
The little girl raised her head and looked at Xia Yan disdainfully. “My name is Du Xia.”
