When there were still two minutes left on the screen, Cheng Zheng arrived.
When she saw him, Fang Yan completely forgot about the imposing manner she had when she was shouting into the phone.
Without waiting for the chauffeur to get out of the car, Fang Yan skillfully opened the backseat door and stuffed a bag of miscellaneous items inside. Then, she quickly got into the front passenger seat.
Cheng Zheng had just pulled up the handbrake and unbuckled his seatbelt when he saw that Fang Yan had already closed the car door and was panting in her seat.
Fang Yan’s head was covered in sweat from shopping in the afternoon. It was a windy day, and she was dressed in an artistic French outfit. She looked like she had experienced the vicissitudes of an American village.
As Cheng Zheng raised the temperature of the car, he said calmly, “If we hadn’t spoken on the phone in advance, I would have thought that you were looking for me to escape with you.”
It was rare that Fang Yan did not mind his teasing. Instead, she thanked him sincerely.
After catching her breath, Fang Yan began to count her spoils of war with Cheng Zheng. There were all kinds of strange small ornaments, cute bedside humidifiers, various shapes of cushions, and so on.
Cheng Zheng sighed. He wanted to reach out and touch Fang Yan’s head, but in the end, he poked her with his index finger. “Don’t do such things in the future. You’re so stupid.”
Fang Yan was stunned and said apologetically, “I’m sorry. Did I cause you trouble? Indeed, I don’t understand your style either. I acted on my own.”
Cheng Zheng quickly realized that his expression was inappropriate.
He had been in the hospital for a long time and was already used to simple and effective ways of expressing himself. Even if he occasionally went out to relax with his friends, they were still a group of men and did not have much care for communication.
Once people relaxed, they would subconsciously choose the social mode they were most familiar with.
However, this short expression sounded like a reproach in life.
“I’m saying, next time you have work to do, don’t do it alone. Remember to catch an unlucky guy who helps you carry your bag.” Cheng Zheng pointed at himself. “Like me.”
A smile slowly appeared on Fang Yan’s face. “Okay.”
Cheng Zheng started the car. “Seriously, you don’t even know how to slack off, and you still need someone to teach you. Other than the things at the back, what else did you buy?”
“Ah! There’s also a mattress and a few four-piece sets, kitchen utensils, and an eye-protecting lamp.” Fang Yan’s voice became cheerful. “I asked the shop to pack them up and send them back.”
Cheng Zheng smiled. “Good, not too stupid.”
Cheng Zheng drove very steadily. The passenger seat was spacious and warm. Just as Fang Yan was about to fall asleep, he heard Cheng Zheng call her name in a low voice.
“Fang Yan.”
“Yes?”
“Sometimes, when I’m especially tired, my words will be a little harsh. Don’t be angry,” Cheng Zheng explained.
Fang Yan suddenly understood that this person was apologizing to her in his way.
Fang Yan was secretly happy in her heart. She felt that this was completely unnecessary. She was wondering how such an honest person could get to the position of the department director.
However, Cheng Zheng was not worth getting sad for at all. Too often, as long as Cheng Zheng thought about it, he could guess the thoughts of the person he was with close to the mark, not far off.
However, he was used to simplicity and was unwilling to live in schemes.
Fang Yan and Cheng Zheng did not go home directly. The two of them had not eaten dinner and were hungry. On the way, they saw a Chuan Yu hotpot restaurant. The decoration was average, but the business was booming.
Fang Yan kept looking over.
“Shall we try it too?” Cheng Zheng suggested.
“Maybe not today.”
Fang Yan had just received a message from Qi You asking if she was free. The next sentence was “I’m in the hospital’s emergency room.”
Fang Yan did not know what had happened, and it was not appropriate for her to tell Cheng Zheng what she had guessed. She only vaguely said that her friend was injured and needed someone to accompany her, and asked Cheng Zheng to go back first.
“Wait a minute.” Cheng Zheng said.
Cheng Zheng parked the car by the roadside and got out himself. When he returned, he handed Fang Yan a hot paper bag.
“Which hospital?” Cheng Zheng asked.
“The Third Courtyard.”
Cheng Zheng: “It’s not too far from here, just a few minutes. Don’t be anxious. Your friend is in the hospital, and he’s conscious. He’s probably fine. There’s hot water and warm milk in the bag, and some food. It’s been heated up. Pick some and eat first, and bring the rest to your friend.”
Fang Yan opened the bag, and the hot fragrance of grilled sausages and oden quickly filled the air.
Fang Yan looked at Cheng Zheng, who was focused on driving. “What about you?”
“Me? Is it alright for me to go over?” Cheng Zheng thought about it and seemed to be thinking of a suitable idea.
“I’ll meet you at the entrance of the hospital. As usual, contact me by phone.”
Fang Yan said, “Chief Cheng, don’t be so serious as if you’re on the operating table. I’m asking you what you’re having for dinner.”
