- Chapter 70 - After My Ex-Boyfriend’s White Moonlight Proposed to Me Chapter 70
On the weekend, Xie Ning met Song Qingqing.
In the past few days, he had been in the hospital. The hospital had him set with both lodging and food so he hadn’t stepped out of the ward for almost a single moment except for the time he went down to buy household utensils.
The single room in Ward V contained a large space and an extra camp bed for people who wanted to accompany the patient at night to sleep. It was previously used by Uncle Zhong, but it had recently become Xie Ning’s bed.
The camp bed was so narrow and small that when a big man laid down it was immediately filled up. If he rolled over, his elbow would easily hit the railing next to him.
“This bed is too hard, and it’s uncomfortable to fall asleep on.” Uncle Zhong wanted to move Xie Ning to another bed.
Xie Ning disagreed.
He was afraid of disturbing Father Xie if he constantly came in and out.
And the bed made no difference for a person with insomnia.
After spending time away from Zhuang Yan, Xie Ning’s insomnia relapsed. At night, he always had trouble sleeping. He looked at the sky outside the window and felt unexplainably lost.
Sometimes he would hold Father Xie’s hand, whisper something, and then stare at the sleeping appearance of Father Xie in a daze.
After looking at him for a while, he would take out his mobile phone and open the message Zhuang Yan had sent him. At the bottom were two sentences “Good night”.
One sentence from Zhuang Yan and one sentence from him.
But although he sent a ‘good night’ he didn’t fall asleep.
The light on the mobile phone screen dimmed because no one was using it for a long time, and Xie Ning was lost for a moment.
He wanted to talk to Zhuang Yan, but he didn’t want to disturb him.
Zhuang Yan should be asleep by now, he thought.
Xie Ning hasn’t slept well for several days, but he did eat three meals a day on time, and will take a picture to send to Zhuang Yan every time he eats.
But nine out of ten times, he couldn’t help vomiting up after eating.
Uncle Zhong frowned, but he had no choice but to comfort himself that he was willing to eat, so he could at least absorb a little bit more nutrients.
Song Qingqing was shocked when she saw him.
His face was pale, he was thin, and his eyes were faintly blue. His deflated appearance made Song Qingqing almost miss him at first sight.
But his expression was calm as if there were no waves. When he saw Song Qingqing he nodded gently at her.
Song Qingqing was brought by Xia Wan. If it were the usual, Xie Ning would have to give Xia Wan a cold face.
However, there was no reaction today, and when his gaze crossed Xia Wan’s face, it was also light.
Xia Wan felt that this kind of Xie Ning was even more unfamiliar and it made her more uncomfortable.
During the day, everyone had affairs that kept them busy. The two brothers Xie Zun and Xie Jing discussed and decided to visit the hospital the next night. The two were separated, but they still did their best to be filial.
Xie Ning was the only exception. He had taken root in the hospital and refused to take a step outside. No one could persuade him.
His mother Xia Wan whispered to him again in private, but Xie Ning didn’t even give her a look this time.
She really had never seen his son be such a filial grandson, waiting in front of the hospital bed as he did right now.
She was unwilling to say: “They have their own affairs to attend to, so there is not much time to spare. Unlike you, who doesn’t care about company matters, and just sits and takes the bonus.”
These various trivial matters have been unable to cause any waves in Xie Ning’s heart.
He seemed to have gone back to the past, hiding himself in a sealed transparent bottle, separated from everyone by a thick layer of glass.
He had nothing to ask for now, nothing else to want, only wishing that his grandfather could wake up safely.
“Why are you…” Song Qingqing just started speaking, then paused, frowned, and retracted her words.
Fortunately, Xie Ning did not reject her. He just pointed at the chair next to her, and motioned for Song Qingqing to sit down.
The two sat quietly for a while.
Song Qingqing said in a low voice, “Aunt Xia Wan asked me to persuade you. She is a little worried. In this state… are you okay?”
Xie Ning paused when he heard the words, but only shook his head and said, “I’m alright.”
Song Qingqing was still thinking about how to continue the conversation when Xie Ning added: “Thank you.”
“What?” Song Qingqing was taken aback.
Xie Ning said, “Thank you for visiting my grandpa, and thank you for caring about me.”
Song Qingqing looked at him, bent her eyes, and smiled: “Can I tell you about Zhuang Yan?”
Xie Ning’s gaze turned to Song Qingqing subconsciously.
Song Qingqing said, “You should know, I studied abroad with Zhuang Yan, and he is my senior.”
Xie Ning replied: “I know.”
Song Qingqing said, “Then are you interested in his experience abroad? I can tell you.”
Xie Ning’s eyes slowly brightened and said, “Interested.”
Song Qingqing quietly breathed a sigh of relief and began to recall the past.
“We, overseas Chinese students, are more or less excluded abroad, so we also have a small group. I met Senior Zhuang Yan from there. Speaking of which, my friend said when he introduced him, that I shouldn’t look at him. He is handsome, but in fact, he has a bad temper and a cold personality. He doesn’t like to talk to people, so they rarely invited him.”
“Then someone smiled next to him, saying that he tried to invite him once and was ignored.”
Xie Ning thought for a while. “It’s indeed something he would do.”
“Later, I found out that although many Chinese people said they did not like him, they would call him every time there was a party. On the contrary, some foreign students were faintly afraid of him.” Song Qingqing then recalled, “Later, I learned that it was because he had fought with some foreign students. He was helping an introverted and often bullied school girl. Those foreign students were tall, but they weren’t able to take up the fight. After that, they didn’t dare to bully anyone anymore.”
“So he is actually very much loved by Chinese compatriots at school. Many people have expressed their admiration for him, subtly or implicitly. In fact, even the foreign students were enthusiastic about him, but he had never looked at anyone differently. We would often gossip in private about who could successfully grab his heart, and even bet on it, but unfortunately everyone lost in the end.”
Xie Ning couldn’t help but interject: “Everyone lost?”
“Yes.” Song Qingqing glanced at him, “He didn’t accept anyone even until graduation. Girls were rejected the most. Some people suspected that he liked men, but the boys who confessed also failed.”
When she said this, she shrugged and joked: “No one was spared.”
Xie Ning was a little dazed.
“So when I saw you in the exhibition, I quickly noticed your relationship.” Song Qingqing said, “That was the first time I saw him take care of people so carefully and seriously, and care about the feelings of another person. How should I put it… He looks at you with obvious love.”
Xie Ning smiled embarrassedly and turned his head away.
Perceiving his shyness, Song Qingqing also followed with a smile, then the topic changed again. She continued to talk about Zhuang Yan studying abroad.
“Although he always disliked messy places, he would not hesitate to take the lead whenever there were Chinese who encountered difficulties. So when I was deceived, the first thing I thought of was to ask him for help.”
Xie Ning asked: “Then he helped you?”
Song Qingqing said: “He ridiculed me first, asking how someone could be so stupid, to even be deceived by something like this.”
Xie Ning: “…”
“But a few days after he finished taunting, he gave a sum of money to me, the amount happened to be the exact amount I was cheated of.” Song Qingqing smiled, “The transfer was anonymous, but I quickly guessed it was him. I immediately ran to ask if he was the one who returned it.”
Xie Ning: “What then? Did he admit it?”
Song Qingqing: “He admitted it. When I asked, he said very naturally, ‘Yes, I transferred it.’ At the time I was wondering how he could admit it so quickly. Then anyone who was doing good things without leaving a name was an idiot.”
Song Qingqing talked about trivial things, there was no story, nor anything particularly intriguing, but Xie Ning listened very seriously.
It seems that as long as it has something to do with the words ‘Zhuang Yan’, it could calm his mind little by little.
Before he knew it, the corners of his lips slowly curled up, and his face gradually showed a relaxed expression.
Song Qingqing’s words were mild, and her voice was very soft, which made people unconsciously relax and let go of their precautions.
She talked for so long her throat had started to dry up, so she got up and poured herself a glass of water. When she looked back, she found Xie Ning closing his eyes and falling asleep while sitting.
Song Qingqing gently took a blanket and covered him.
When she approached, she happened to see his side profile, his lips that were slightly curved as if he was sleeping with a smile.
Song Qingqing didn’t know if Xie Ning was following her in imagining Zhuang Yan’s experiences studying abroad, or just happy at the mention of Zhuang Yan
She took out her phone and sent a message to Zhuang Yan: He finally fell asleep.
The other man seemed to be busy. After a long time, Zhuang Yan finally replied: Thank you.
