“Nothing’s wrong. Don’t worry about it.” Youguang wiped her hands. “I want to check out the broken pipe.”
However, she did not expect the broken water pipe to be located on the hill.
It was really not easy to walk on this hill. After the fall, her body was not hurt but her hand was accidentally cut by the grass on the side. Now, the wound was burning and a little uncomfortable.
“Don’t continue anymore. I’ll call some professionals to take a look.”
“Sure.”
Since Mama said so. Youguang had no need to go on looking.
She came to look at the pipes because she wanted to assess the situation and estimate the possibility of repairs.
“Aren’t you going to see it?” the little girl interrupted.
“Yes. I am not. Let’s go down.” Youguang looked at the little girl. “Thank you for helping me earlier.”
“You’re welcome.” The kid waved her hand. “Are you guys going to get somebody to fix the plumbing?”
“Yes we are.” Youguang nodded.
“You’re good people.” The little girl gave a big smile and continued to praise Xia Youqing. She even gave her a thumbs-up. “Good people who are beautiful and kind.”
Hearing the little girl’s unsophisticated praise, the mother and daughter pair looked at each other and smiled.
When the three of them returned to the house, they saw that there were a few buckets of water and also a young couple.
The driver was talking to them.
The couple was of medium height. They had plain round faces with friendly smiles.
Youguang recognized Sister Yang from her slightly familiar and smiling face.
She was Sister Yang, whom the little girl was talking about earlier. She was also the very caring middle-aged woman she knew when she was volunteering at the animal shelter in her previous life.
At this time, Sister Yang was still young. She looked like a young lady in her thirties without any wrinkles on her face. She looked so different from the kind middle-aged auntie she had known in her previous life.
But Youguang was certain that they were the same person.
After thirty years, she had met her again because of the little animals.
“So, people who are destined to meet in life are bound to meet.”
“Sister Yang, these two kind people said that they want to help you repair the water pipes.” As soon as the little girl entered, she couldn’t help but report the good news to Sister Yang.
Sister Yang and the young man beside her were originally a little restrained when they saw the classy-looking Youguang and Xia Youqing, but they were stunned by the girl’s words.
After a while, Sister Yang asked Xia Youqing in a slightly nervous and expectant tone,
“Miss, is Xiao Xiao saying the truth?”
“Sister Yang, I, Zhuang Xiaoxiao, would never lie. I heard it from them just now.” The little girl said angrily.
Xia Youqing nodded.
Youguang was stunned by the name Zhuang Xiaoxiao.
After a long time, she carefully sized up the energetic little girl beside her.
“That’s great.”
Sister Yang and the young man were so happy that they almost cried. They kept thanking Xia Youqing.
Xia Youqing was a little embarrassed by their deep gratitude.
All she had to do was make a few phone calls and pay some money. These two acted as if she was their savior. She felt a little guilty at the receiving end of their gratitude.
Then, they started chatting about the situation at the shelter.
Only then did Xia Youqing and the others know that the young man’s name was Liu Kun and the woman’s name was Yang Hui. They were actually not in charge of the animal shelter. They were just volunteers who often came over to help because they liked small animals. The real person-in-charge was a very caring old granny.
But last year, she fell seriously ill and could no longer take care of these stray animals.
Yang Hui then took over as the main person-in-charge.
She and the young man had day jobs. Yang Hui was an accountant for a company, and the young man was a librarian in the city library.
Their abilities were limited, but they were also doing their best to take care of the animals at the shelter.
Apart from their basic living expenses, their monthly salary was used to buy food for the cats and dogs.
They couldn’t afford any other expenses.
One of them was the broken water pipe at the wandering station a few days ago.
“We feel that this water pipe was vandalized.” Yang Hui said dejectedly. “But we can’t find the person responsible. We’ve had people look at it, but the repair costs are too high.”
So, in this cold weather, she and the young man had to travel a long distance after work to fetch buckets of water for the animals.
In order to save a few trips going back and forth, both of them used a lot of physical strength to bring up as much water as they could.
It was hard but they struggled to hang in there.
Because they knew that no one but themselves would take care of the animals.
Actually, be it water or food, the shelter was lacking these basic necessities that were required for the animals to survive.
Hearing the situation of the shelter, everyone fell silent.
These stray animals under their care are fortunate enough to end their wandering life. But unfortunately, they were still living on the brink of survival and death.
“You guys have worked hard. I’ll call a professional now to have the pipes checked. If there’s anything else you need, you can contact my assistant later.”
Xia Youqing gave Xiaozhu’s phone number to Yang Hui.
“This place is remote. It’s very troublesome to re-install the water pipes.” The young man was introverted and reserved.
When he spoke, his constantly lowered gaze shifted to the animals on the ground. Occasionally, he would look towards the little girl who looked as exquisite as a jade figurine.
“No problem. All these problems you have, my assistant will help you in getting them fixed.”
Xia Youqing raised her hand and casually pointed to a few tattered corners.
Yang Hui and Liu Kun understood. Not only did the beautiful lady want to help repair their water pipes, she also wanted to fix up the shelter.
The little girl, who had been listening carefully to everyone the entire time, was also smiling from ear to ear.
She had on a dirty khaki cotton jacket and was wearing shoes that were too big for her feet.
Her clothes weren’t enough to keep her warm in this icy weather. She was so cold that she kept sniffling. Sometimes when the snot got too long, she simply wiped them off with her dark sleeves. The image was enough to turn off anybody.
But there was only heartache when Youguang looked at her.
“I’m sorry, I haven’t asked your name. Can you tell me?”
She walked over to the little girl.
“My name is Zhuang Xiaoxiao, and my nickname is Boss Zhuang. What about you?” The little girl happily gave her name.
Youguang, however, choked instantly.
“I… My name is Ning Youguang. My nickname is You You. I’m seven years old. How old are you?”
Actually, she roughly knew the little girl’s age.
She was just too shocked, too surprised, and too afraid of making a mistake, so she wanted to ask a few more questions to make sure.
“You’re seven years old? Then I’m older than you. I’m nine years old.” The little girl said with a smile, completely unaware of the storm brewing in Youguang’s heart.
“Yes, you’re older than me. You’re the older sister.” Youguang’s lips trembled slightly, her voice was cracking.
