Chapter 8: I’ll Give You Both Candies

The Rainbow Bilingual Kindergarten adopted an international model of pre-school education. Many of the school’s curriculum designs revolved around how to maximize the development of children’s cognitive abilities. This led to more hands-on classes and practical training in the school.
During these classes, there were also many projects that required the children to collaborate and work as a team. Students who completed their assignments well would be rewarded with red flowers or smiling faces by their teachers.
In the past, Little Wangyue often worked on the assignments alone. It was always difficult for him to obtain any rewards or little red flowers from the teacher.
Hands-on lessons were his least favorite.
But something was different now. He had a deskmate who would complete the projects with him. He was no longer alone.
Besides, his deskmate was so smart. No matter what the teacher taught, she always picked up fast and well.
So, even if it was just the two of them, they were always the fastest and best team. They also got the most little red flowers.
He also realized that everyone in class also liked his beautiful and smart deskmate very much. Every time there was a project, many of his classmates were eager to work with his deskmate, but she would always choose him as her teammate.
“Please don’t choose another classmate.”
Everyone else in class had many teammates, but he only had one. If she were to choose another classmate, he would be alone again.
When no one was around, the kid went through those thoughts quietly.
… .
Nighttime, in the Shi family villa, Shi Wangyue’s room.
A light gray wool carpet was laid on the wood-colored floor.
A fair and plump young man dressed in pajamas was sitting on the carpet. He stared at the stars on the carpet with his round eyes. He said in astonishment to the four-year-old boy beside him.
“Baby, the stars you folded are so beautiful. They come in so many colors.”
“Daddy, I didn’t fold this. My deskmate did.” Shi Wangyue picked up the star on the carpet that his father was eyeing and placed it in front of his father’s eyes. He explained earnestly.
“Oh, Baby’s very impressive deskmate folded it.” The fat young man pouted and tilted his head as he thought.
“Right. My deskmate is good.” The boy nodded emphatically.
“Does your deskmate glow?”
“Dad, I’ve told you so many times. It’s not a glowing deskmate. It’s my deskmate whose name is Youguang.”
“Youguang means glow right?”
“She’s human. She doesn’t glow.”
“Why can’t people glow?” Wangyue’s father found it strange. “You glow.”
“How can I glow?” Shi Wangyue sighed.
“Dad’s so stupid. What can I do to make him smarter?”
“When you smile.” Wangyue’s father gave his son a big smile, revealing his white and neat teeth.
“Do you know what time it is? You’re still sitting on the carpet playing with your toys.” Liu Susu had just finished washing up when she arrived at her son’s room. She looked unhappy to see her husband and son still playing on the carpet.
“Susu, you’re done showering.” The fat young man stood up from the carpet timidly and poked at his own fingers.
His hands were slim and fair. It was a pair of beautiful hands.
“Didn’t I tell you both to sleep before I went in for my shower?” Liu Susu didn’t look at her husband and she turned to her son with a grim expression.
“Mom, I’m sorry. I’ll go to bed after I pack.” Shi Wangyue picked up the box beside him and started keeping the stars that were laying on the carpet.
“Apart from being sorry, what else?”
“I won’t play till so late in the future. I’ll sleep at nine o’clock sharp,” Shi Wangyue quickly promised.
“Susu, I want to sleep with my baby tonight. Can I?”
He could secretly play with the stars if he were to sleep with Baby.
“No, you can’t.”
“Susu, I still want to see the stars.” The fat young man pouted—his round eyes revealed a tinge of sadness.
“Why are you looking at the stars? Go to bed.” Liu Susu was like a stern parent with her husband and son. She was determined to stop them from doing anything that violated the rules she had set.
“Mom, can I give Dad a star?” Shi Wangyue asked his mother when he saw his father staring at the stars in the box longingly.
Liu Susu wanted to say why would an adult want to play with paper stars, but she looked at his son and then at her husband. She didn’t voice out her thoughts.
She felt very uncomfortable and unbalanced.
Her son was always willing to talk whenever he was with his father. When it came to her, he only became more and more silent.
“Take that away and go to bed,” she told her husband with a cold expression.
“Yes, yes. I’ll be good and go to sleep now.” The fat young man happily took the star from his son and jogged to his room.
After her husband went out, Liu Susu closed the door to her son’s room and asked him while he was packing up,
“Wangyue, are you good friends with your deskmate?”
Shi Wangyue took a glance at her but said nothing.
“Yang Yang told me that the two of you are good friends. You even told your deskmate not to play with him, right?”
“No.” Shi Wangyue heard his mother’s words and felt angry. “Youguang wouldn’t play with impolite children.”
Liu Susu choked on her words, but thinking of what Zhao Fei’er had asked from her today, she continued, “Go and tell your deskmate that Yang Yang is not an impolite child. Can you two play with him?”
Shi Wangyue became even more upset and glared at her. His eyes instantly turned red and he clenched his fists.
Liu Susu was shocked by her son’s response. “Didn’t I tell you that you should share everything with Yangyang and you have to give in to him if you can? That way things will be easier for us at home. Have you forgotten all that?”
The child raised his arm and wiped his eyes. Without looking at his mother again, he got into bed and covered himself with the blanket, silently protesting against his mother’s request.
She knew that her son was reluctant to do as she said, but Liu Susu felt it was nothing more than a child’s selfishness in not wanting to share his toys with others.
With this thought in mind, Liu Susu pulled back her son’s blanket and continued, “In the future, you have to bring your classmates to play with Yang Yang, understand? Otherwise, if your second aunt gets angry, she will scold Mommy and give Mommy less pocket money. Without money, we won’t be able to live comfortably.”
Then she turned off the lights and left the room.
That night, the sad little Wangyue hid under the blanket and cried secretly for a long time.
… .
The next morning, when Youguang entered the classroom, she found little Wangyue sitting in his seat, looking a bit crestfallen.
“Little Wangyue, what’s wrong? Are you unhappy?”
After the two of them became deskmates, Youguang kept calling Shi Wangyue by that name.
The child turned to look at her. He didn’t speak but his eyes looked troubled. After a moment, he shook his head and turned away.
The kid went quiet again.
Youguang’s heart sank. Then she took out two bright lemon candies from her pocket and gently placed them in front of the child.
“I brought lemon candies from home today. It’s sweet and sour and so yummy. I’ll give you both.”
Youguang gets two candies a day at home.
She was not a real child and did not crave sweets. She gave most of the sweets to Xia Huan.
However, the candies that she received today were lemon candies that she loved in both her lives, so she kept them for herself.
Now they could be put to good use for comforting the unhappy child.
“Thank you. We’ll take one each.”
Tempted by the lemon candies, the child who had earlier receded back into his shell, had ventured out again.
