Chapter 11: Surveillance

The interrogation reached an impasse. Wu Peng answered every question with “I don’t know what you are talking about.” He neither resisted nor cooperated with the interrogation.
If this was any other time, Ye Wei would have used her tactics on him. However, using corporal punishment on a trained person like Wu Peng might result in the opposite effect.
The core installation was of utmost importance. Ye Wei did not want to make any mistakes.
“Wu Peng, can you explain why you brought weapons to the satellite signal receiver?” Ye Wei asked.
“I was happily surfing the web when the signal suddenly stopped. I naturally had to head over to take a look,” Wu Peng answered calmly.
“Then can you explain where you got those weapons?” Ye Wei countered.
“I made them myself,” Wu Peng answered.
“It is such an old-style rifle, yet it looked like it was factory new after our tests. Could there be an arms factory in your house?” Ye Wei asked, pushing him in a corner with her latest question.
“Uhhh…”
Ye Wei was elated when she saw Wu Peng at a loss for words for the first time. She had finally found a breakthrough point.
“The gear you are wearing is all rather professional military equipment. You must not be just a simple hobbyist. There must definitely be an organization backing you,” Ye Wei said, steering the conversation.
Wu Peng once again slopped into silence, and Ye Wei knew that she had pushed the other party to a dead end.
“As long as you tell me about the organization backing you as well as where the core installation is, I can guarantee that your life will be safe,” Ye Wei said as she tried to make a deal with Wu Peng.
Ye Wei stood up, bent over, and put her face near Wu Peng’s as she stared at him intently with her almond-shaped eyes.
Wu Peng looked at Ye Wei, confused. He suddenly laughed heartily when they locked eyes for a few seconds.
“You look extremely alluring when you are serious. I’ll stop joking with you. Release the restraints on my arms and get me something to eat while you are at it,” Wu Peng said with a cheeky smile.
Ye Wei was a little confused by his sudden change in attitude. However, based on her experience interrogating criminals, the criminal usually was prepared to spill the beans when they voiced their requests, so she immediately ordered her subordinates to prepare some food.
Wu Peng moved his rather numb arms around and gulped down the food that he was served while he cursed at how bad it tasted.
Ye Wei felt a wave of heat rise up to her head when she saw how cynical Wu Peng was. However, she collected herself and silently waited for Wu Peng to finish. “Can you give me an explanation now?”
Wu Peng licked his lips and savored the last of the food. He looked around, puckered his lips, and complained, “You didn’t even give me any napkins.” He wiped his mouth clean with his hands. “I’ll tell you the truth because you are quite smart and beautiful. The leader of the repair team, Leader Qin, is my friend.”
“Nonsense!” Ye Wei could no longer control her emotions and slammed her palm fiercely onto the table.
“I thought that you were born with an inexpressive face. So it turns out that you can get angry,” Wu Peng said with a sigh.
Ye Wei picked up her communication device when she heard Wu Peng’s flippant words, “Men! Punish him!”
“Don’t be in such a rush, you can decide after I finish speaking,” Wu Peng quickly stopped her with a smile before he described the scene of when he first met Qin Ming and the rest of the repair team.
He also explained in detail the last time he saw Qin Ming’s team and how he got ambushed by the enemy.
Ye Wei slipped into deep thought after she heard what Wu Peng said.
The repair team always gave a clear report of their actions every time they went out on their missions. What they reported fit completely with the timing Wu Peng had told her about.
“You said that you encountered the enemy’s ambush. Can you clearly describe the number of enemies and the weapons they were using?” Ye Wei asked, still deep in thought.
“The sky was too dark and I was too far away. I can’t tell you the exact number, but they should have been using a semi-automatic rifle.”
Wu Peng’s statement was full of holes. Ye Wei could not determine if he was speaking the truth at that moment.
Just as she was deliberating, a subordinate told her that the autopsy reports of the repair team’s corpses were ready through her communication device.
Based on the report, Qin Ming and the rest of the team had been killed by an S332 rifle. Currently, this rifle was only used by an organization called “Viper.”
It was not congruent with any of the weapons they found on Wu Peng.
“Could he really be innocent?” Ye Wei looked at Wu Peng’s face. She felt unexplainably uncomfortable. “Since it was not you who did it, why did you not tell the truth when you first entered the room?”
Wu Peng propped his leg up and put his hands behind his head, “That’s because they are all brutes who only know how to use violence. It would have been useless no matter what I said. Only you are qualified after having passed the test. The truth should only be told to intelligent people. Can you let me go now?” he said as he stood up and stretched his body.
Ye Wei looked at the rather smug Wu Peng. She suddenly lifted the corner of her lips, “You are temporarily cleared of suspicion, but you still have to be within our surveillance radius.” She picked up her communication device after she said that and ordered, “Men, install a tracking device on him.”
Sometime later, two law enforcers entered the room. One of them was holding an injection device that looked like a handgun.
The other law enforcer pressed Wu Peng down onto the table before he pressed the tip of the needle into his neck.
Wu Peng nearly fainted from the pain as he glared at the law enforcer.
The two law enforcers left the room immediately after they administered the injection.
Ye Wei looked at the slightly haggard Wu Peng and said with a smile on her face, “We injected a tracking device into your neck. Don’t think about taking it out or trying to escape. The device can operate even without a satellite signal.”
Ye Wei then pointed toward the door, “You can leave now, but you have to be escorted by a member of my team.”
Wu Peng rubbed his neck and quickly walked out of the room.
Escorted by a law enforcer, Wu Peng once again returned to the side of the satellite signal receiver.
The blood on the ground had not been completely buried by the dust and debris, and he felt as though he could still see Qin Ming in front of him.
“You made me go through so much trouble. How can I forgive you?”
…
Wu Peng ate something after he returned to his little den and started to do his research on the Internet.
He had faintly heard the term “Viper” from Ye Wei’s communication device and immediately guessed that the term was a nickname for a person or an organization.
Many phrases appeared on the Internet after he searched the term “Viper.” After sieving through the results, he finally found a few clues.
Viper was an extremely mysterious organization that influenced many industries including military work, pharmaceuticals, smuggling, etc.
However, he could not find anything more specific on the Internet.
Though, it was that Wu Peng could not find out more while in his shelter. Ye Wei might have access to more information using the law enforcement unit’s network.
“I’ll go look for the cold beauty tomorrow.” Wu Peng shut down his computer, and Ye Wei’s face appeared in his mind.
…
On the other side, Ye Wei was also thinking about Wu Peng.
She had always been confident in her abilities ever since she became the team captain. However, she realized that she had been led along by Wu Peng during their interrogation.
He clearly could rile up her emotions and constantly gain the upper hand during the interrogation.
An ordinary person would have peed their pants in fear when they were brought into the interrogation room.
Wu Peng managed to remain calm from the very beginning and always voiced out his requests. That made Ye Wei develop a slight interest in him.
She did not rest after she got off work. She turned on the specialized network of the law enforcers and started to dig up information about Wu Peng.
It would have been fine if she had not searched for Wu Peng’s information. She became more and more confused the more she tried to find out about him.
Wu Peng seemed to have sprung out of a rock, as there was no past information about him at all.
