Chapter 23: Reward
Elsa had a surprised look in her eyes when she saw the clothes in Wu Peng’s hands. “Are those clothes for me? Thank you, Brother Peng!”
“Why are you thanking me? You are my little sister. I can’t let you continue wearing rags, can I?” Wu Peng said with a smile.
Elsa praised as she examined the clothes in her hands. “The workmanship of these clothes are great. I can’t even see the seams. They are like the heavenly clothes of the legends. Where did you find them?”
Wu Peng smiled but did not reply to her. He looked in the pot and said, “You are making noodles?”
“Oh no!” Elsa let out a cry of shock. She had been too busy looking at the clothes and completely forgot about the noodles she was cooking in the pot.
She quickly picked up a pair of chopsticks and stirred the contents of the pot to prevent the noodles from becoming clumped together.
She saw Wu Peng stand beside her and concentrated on what she was doing as if something interesting was happening.
“Brother Peng, you should go and wait for the food to be ready. You can let me handle all of the meals in the future. The kitchen is out of bounds to you!” Elsa pushed Wu Peng out of the kitchen after she said that.
She had a little scheme of her own. She had to have an irreplaceable role if she wanted to stay in the shelter long-term.
Wu Peng looked like a person who did not know how to cook. Elsa decided that she was going to conquer him through his stomach and wanted to keep her cooking a secret.
She could not let Wu Peng secretly learn from her.
Wu Peng walked into the living room, stretched his body, and sat down on the sofa comfortably.
He heard the sound of the pots and pans from the kitchen and smelled the wafts of fragrance.
He felt unexplainably excited. It was as if he had been instantly transported to the past.
There was no post-apocalyptic world and no nonsensical Viper. All he did every day was peacefully eat his meals and nap on his sofa.
Wu Peng slowly drifted off to sleep as he imagined that.
Sometime later, Elsa woke him up, “Brother Peng, it’s time to eat.”
Wu Peng quickly sat up and looked at the food on the table.
“I don’t know your taste preferences. You have to tell me if you don’t like it,” Elsa said.
Wu Peng was not a picky person. He had eaten canned food for more than a month. How could he complain now that there was someone making food for him?
He picked up his chopsticks and slurped down his noodles.
Elsa felt extremely happy when she saw how fast Wu Peng ate.
Wu Peng polished off his bowl of noodles in under 20 seconds. “That’s too delicious. My taste buds have almost degraded after eating plain buns every day.”
“It’s good that you like it. Even though the facilities here are very complete, the variety of foods you have is too little. I can only accomplish this even with my best efforts.” Elsa’s words moved Wu Peng’s heart greatly. His desire to obtain new seeds became even stronger.
After his meal, Wu Peng gave Elsa his room. After all, she was a girl and a guest.
He would sleep temporarily on the sofa in the living room.
He could search for an opportunity when Elsa was not around and create another room when he amassed some points.
Elsa started to constantly yawn after they had a little chat. Wu Peng quickly got her to rest.
After Elsa fell asleep, Wu Peng laid down on the sofa and connected to the Bird Scouting Drone’s camera, and started to observe the situation around his shelter.
The animosity between him and Viper had increased now that he had taken action and saved Elsa.
When he thought about the pitiful events that happened to Elsa’s family, Wu Peng did not wish for a group of members from Viper to fiercely charge into the shelter while he slept.
He steered the Bird and scouted a few rounds around the shelter. He ascertained that there were no abnormalities.
Wu Peng set the Bird to an automatic patrol mode, stretched, and fell asleep.
…
The sun rose. Wu Peng opened his eyes and accessed his point log as usual. He realized that he had gained a full 950 points.
He quickly examined the point log closely. The log stated that he earned 300 points after he saved Elsa, 300 after he killed his enemies, 300 after he let Elsa stay in his shelter, and 50 after he survived the day.
“Ssss, so it turns out that helping people is not the only way to earn points, but I would obtain even more point rewards for saving people!” Wu Peng saved Elsa not just because of justice, but also because he wanted to obstruct Viper’s plans.
Wu Peng would do anything to foil Viper’s mission, regardless if it benefited him or not.
He did not expect this accidental gain.
“This Mechanical System is trying to nurture me into a saint! Great Saint Wu!” Wu Peng grinned from ear to ear as he laughed at himself.
“Brother Peng, what are you so happy about?” Elsa had also woken up.
She had wanted to prepare a meal before Wu Peng woke up. However, the two consecutive days of running for her life and the injuries on her body prevented her from waking up on time after she fell asleep.
It was Wu Peng’s laugh in the living room that woke Elsa up.
“It’s nothing. I just remembered a joke. You woke up so early. Did you rest well?” Wu Peng asked with a smile.
“I had a good rest. I’ll go prepare a meal now.” Elsa did not want Wu Peng to treat her as a guest. She immediately went to wash up and started to prepare breakfast.
“It’s no wonder they say that there can only be a good life if there’s a woman in the house.” Wu Peng sighed and propped his legs up, he felt extremely pleased.
Even though he was in a huge amount of danger when he saved Elsa yesterday, he gained much from it.
He had gotten a hardworking godsister and 950 points. He even managed to get back at Viper.
It was like he killed many birds with one stone.
Thinking about this, Wu Peng wanted Viper to hurry and cause more trouble so that he could play the good guy and obtain more points.
An hour later, Elsa prepared the meal. This time, she made rice in soup, a classic noodle dish.
Wu Peng gulped his bowl down, and his stomach felt warm and comfortable.
When he saw Elsa start to wash the bowls and chopsticks, he decided to head over to Ye Wei’s base and have a look.
He had not seen General Hua for three days and wondered if she had thought about him.
“Elsa, I’m heading out later. Let me give you a few instructions,” Wu Peng said with a smile.
Wu Peng brought Elsa to the main door and pointed at the LED screen on the wall. “This is the shelter’s defense system. If you hear it beep, press the red button. I’ll immediately receive a notification.”
Elsa nodded and quickly committed it to memory.
After he left the shelter, Wu Peng took out his binoculars and surveyed the surroundings.
Even though the Bird was scouting the area, to look at the surroundings with his own eyes still gave him a feeling of safety.
After he ascertained that there was nothing abnormal around him, Wu Peng hurried toward the base of the law enforcers.
Ye Wei had been extremely busy recently and flipped through files in her office, as usual, this morning.
Viper struck multiple locations at once. Many cities had been damaged, but there had been no clues left behind.
She had also taken part in meetings with the law enforcers of the other cities and exchanged information in detail, yet she could not arrive at any breakthroughs.
There was only one satellite signal receiver left in the Jiang CIty. The situation would be disastrous if it got destroyed.
While she was deep in thought, she heard a familiar voice, “General Hua, have you been thinking about me these past few days?”
She knew who it was even without having to guess. Only Wu Peng dared to talk to her like that in the base of the law enforcers.
