Chapter 27: Reward
Wu Peng deliberated for a long time and decided to purchase another Bird with his points.
There were several shelters where the meteor had landed. Many of the fragments must have been picked away by the people living nearby.
He might not be able to cover enough area with just one Bird Scouting Drone.
Currently, he was in a race with Viper to see who could find more crystallized meteorites.
He was also the first one to find out the truth.
He spent the 1000 points he had just gained. A beam of white light flashed on the production station and another Bird Scouting Drone appeared.
He could monitor the images from both Birds after he set his phone to split-screen mode.
Wu Peng also frequently went to look for Ye Wei to see if there were any new leads.
As he expected, the autopsy reports of Ma Ming and his family’s corpses showed that their bullet wounds had all come from Viper’s rifle.
Ye Wei also subtly expressed her thanks for Wu Peng. If not for his reminder, her thought processes about the case might have strayed to another area.
Unfortunately, as long as it was something that Viper had a hand with, there would not be any other leads to follow up on.
The methods employed by Viper were terrifyingly professional. They cleaned the scene of the crime well.
Wu Peng had once considered handing over Elsa’s crystallized meteorite to Ye Wei to see if she could find any leads, however, he considered that the item was an item left behind by Elsa’s father and dismissed that thought.
Wu Peng’s shelter had become well maintained ever since Elsa moved in. She had done a deep clean of the entire shelter. The walls and floor were basically shining. She even washed Wu Peng’s clothes and bedsheets.
Wu Peng of course looked happy on the surface. However, he felt a constant worry in his heart. The young lady was transforming from a guest to the mistress of the house.
If this situation continued to develop, Wu Peng would not be able to get her to leave.
It came time again for the crops in the nursery to be harvested.
With the experiences he had in the past, he had a large harvest this time around.
However, both Wu Peng and Elsa were a little dejected when they saw the mountain of wheat.
“Brother Peng, why are they all wheat? It’s not healthy to consume carbohydrates every day,” Elsa grumbled with a bitter smile.
Wu Peng was also very sick of carbohydrates.
He could deal with it when he had lived alone in the past. However, now that he had Elsa, eating noodles every day despite having a great cook in the shelter was a complete waste of her talents.
“I heard that there’s a small market nearby. We can bring some of the wheat over to the market tomorrow and try to exchange it for some other seeds.” Wu Peng had accidentally noticed that the residents nearby would gather to do some simple transactions after breakfast while he was scouting the area with the Bird.
“Is that true? Then we have to get some seeds of fruits! It’s been a long time since I had any fresh fruit!” Elsa was extremely excited. Girls often could not resist sweet fruits.
…
The next morning, Wu Peng was still asleep when Elsa rudely woke him up. “Brother Peng, wake up quickly. Breakfast is ready. Go over to the market and have a look after you are done with your meal!”
Even though Wu Peng had not slept enough, he did not have a choice but to get up. He carried half a bag of wheat after his breakfast and left the shelter under Elsa’s expectant gaze.
He had walked around two kilometers when he saw a simple house made out of scrap steel. It occupied an area of around 500 square meters.
“This should be the market,” Wu Peng thought and quickly walked through the door.
He saw a crowd of people in the house. This was the first time Wu Peng had seen this many people in one place in this post-apocalyptic world.
The people gathered together in troves. Some of them were shouting, while others were whispering their conversations. “Come and have a look! Fresh cabbage! Fresh potatoes! There are no such shops past this village!”
“Cabbage and potatoes?!” Wu Peng thought excitedly and quickly followed the voice over to the stall. He loved those two vegetables.
When he arrived in front of the stall, he saw that the person selling the vegetables was about 40 years old and had horrifying scars across his face. One of the scars went past his left eye and made him look exceptionally ferocious.
In front of the person was a plastic tarp with two cabbages and three potatoes on it.
“Do you call that fresh?” Wu Peng thought and felt nauseous when he saw the dry cabbage leaves and the arid, warty potatoes.
The person saw Wu Peng remain silent after looking at his crops for a long time and became unhappy. “Are you going to buy it or not? Don’t block the way if you are not.”
Wu Peng was not angry. He said with a smile, “How should I address you, boss?”
“The people around here call me Lone Eye Wang. How can I help you?” Lone Eye Wang was clearly a nickname. The people in this post-apocalyptic world were all very cautious and would never easily tell others their name.
“Lone Eye Wang? Do you have any vegetable seeds?” Wu Peng asked with a smile.
Lone Eye Wang laughed loudly after he heard that, “Is this the first time you visited a market? Vegetable seeds? Do you know how valuable vegetable seeds are? They are difficult to obtain even at the markets in the official shelters, much less here.”
The people around them nodded while Lone Eye Wang spoke. They also wanted to have some vegetable seeds in their shelters but there was no supply to meet their demand.
This made Wu Peng a little surprised. It was no wonder that Ye Wei had reacted so strongly when he asked her for seeds.
It looked like the seeds in his wheat were premium items.
He walked around the market after he left Lone Eye Wang’s stall and did not find anything valuable.
Most of the items were inferior goods that he did not fancy. However, there was still a demand for those items in this post-apocalyptic world.
“I can’t return empty-handed.” Wu Peng thought and returned to Lone Eye Wang’s stall when he thought about Elsa’s gaze before he left the shelter.
“Do you still have any more vegetables?” Wu Peng asked.
Lone Eye Wang saw that Wu Peng had returned and asked angrily, “Are you going to buy them if I have them?”
“I’ll buy whatever you have!” Wu Peng assured him.
“You are small but you say big words. I’ll show you the world!” Lone Eye Wang did not want to be underestimated by Wu Peng. He stood up and opened the wooden crate that he had sat on.
There were five cabbages, four potatoes, and two carrots in the crate. The sight of these vegetables attracted many people’s attention.
Most of them had not seen vegetables for a long time. They could not help but swallow when they saw this many vegetables in one place.
Lone Eye Wang quickly closed the lid of the crate when he saw more and more people gather around his stall. “Shoo, shoo, shoo! Go away if you are not going to buy the vegetables.”
Wu Peng knew that he was afraid of other people having bad intentions. He shuffled forward and asked quietly, “Where did you get those vegetables?”
“Why are you asking so much? Didn’t you boast that you’ll buy whatever I have just now?” Lone Eye Wang asked, his tone became more agitated.
Wu Peng smiled confidently, “Name your price.”
“Sigh, I haven’t had plain buns for a long time. I’ll give you the vegetables if you can give me ten kilograms of flour.” Lone Eye Wang’s words caused everyone around them to gasp in shock.
Ten kilograms of flour was enough to feed a family of three for a month if it was managed properly.
Lone Eye Wang had wanted to deter Wu Peng but unfortunately named the only thing that Wu Peng had.
“Deal! Look closely!” Wu Peng said loudly. He placed the bag on his back on the ground and took out a handful of wheat.
