Chapter 38: Crisis
“The other party’s car is pretty fast. We won’t be able to catch up.”
Wu Peng glanced at the accelerometer on their armored vehicle. They were already at max speed.
Unfortunately, they were unable to close the distance between them and the car in front of them. If this carried on, they wouldn’t be able to catch up even if they exhausted all of their fuel.
“Wu Peng, use the machine gun to puncture their tires.”
Ye Wei didn’t want to give up just like that.
At the moment, the armored SUV’s trunk opened, revealing a barrel with many black holes.
Wu Peng felt his scalp prickle, and he immediately squirmed back to the co-pilot seat.
“Thump, thump, thump!” The gun barrel fired rhythmically, instantly penetrating the bulletproof glass on the law enforcer’s armored vehicle.
Fortunately, the bullets only grazed past Ye Wei’s body.
Ye Wei was quick to react, immediately jerking the steering wheel to the side and stepping on the brakes.
The armored vehicle rotated in position. The back of the car was now facing the enemy.
The two of them immediately hugged their heads and crouched under their seats the moment the car stopped in order to protect themselves from being hit.
A moment later, after noticing that the enemy was no longer firing at them, Wu Peng opened the door and checked behind them.
The armored SUV had vanished.
“Sigh! That was close. To think that the enemy would have a heavy-duty machine gun cannon. It looks like the person in that car is definitely important.”
Heavy-duty machine gun cannons were usually installed on fighter jets or fighting vessels, and their immense firepower could easily pierce through armor.
Faced with the power of one of those cannons, the law enforcement unit’s armored vehicle might as well have been tofu in front of a steel hammer.
Ye Wei also got out of the car. Seeing that the enemy was receding into the distance, she angrily kicked the tire of the car.
“Forget it. We won’t accomplish anything if we’re too impatient. Let’s go back and clean up the battlefield,” Wu Peng consoled Ye Wei. However, shortly after, he realized that there was thick smoke billowing from the cover of their armored vehicle.
He quickly opened the cover to investigate the situation and realized that the interior of the car had become scrap metal after being hit by the bullets. This armored vehicle was useless now.
“Sigh, it looks like we’ll have to walk back.”
Wu Peng took out his weapon from inside the car and carried it on his back. Then, he walked over to Ye Wei and tapped her on the shoulder, signaling that they should head back quickly.
Ye Wei pushed Wu Peng’s hand away, feeling a little frustrated. They set off after she also grabbed her weapon from inside the car.
They had just walked several hundred meters when they saw many of Viper’s men running toward them.
Wu Peng cursed their bad luck at encountering Viper’s men, who were fleeing the battlefield.
Wu Peng wasn’t afraid, and he wouldn’t be even if he were alone. After all, the men were fleeing for their lives and had no time to be bothered with him.
However, it was different with Ye Wei around. She was carrying a weapon that only law enforcers had, and the members of Viper would definitely attack them if they saw it.
“Let’s hide first. Lots of Viper’s members are fleeing right now, and it would be disadvantageous for us to engage in battle with them.”
Wu Peng looked around and saw an abandoned building to their left. He immediately pulled Ye Wei into the building to hide.
The two of them observed the situation outside through a hole in the window and saw a constant stream of Viper’s men passing them by.
They were all running toward where the armored SUV had headed just now.
“That’s weird. Why are they running over there? Could that be Viper’s main gathering point in Jiang City?” Ye Wei whispered, voicing her suspicions, but Wu Peng remained silent.
Ye Wei wanted to head out of the abandoned building but was stopped by Wu Peng.
“No, I have to follow them and have a look,” she said.
“My great Captain Ye! Stay here for a moment. If Viper’s members spot us, we won’t be able to fight them with just the two of us.”
Ye Wei glared at Wu Peng. She knitted her brows and said softly, “This is an opportunity to find Viper’s headquarters. Stay here and wait if you’re afraid.”
She pushed Wu Peng’s hand away and, half crouching, headed out of the abandoned building to follow Viper’s men.
Wu Peng let out a long sigh and shook his head in frustration. If it were anyone else, he wouldn’t have been bothered, but this was Ye Wei, the person he loved. All he could do was follow her.
The two of them followed Viper’s men as they escaped.
They maintained a distance of several meters between them and Viper’s men, who didn’t notice them even after it had been ten minutes.
They walked another several hundred meters and suddenly saw Viper’s members slow down.
Ye Wei took out her binoculars to look at the men. After a moment, she said, “It’s that armored SUV!”
At that moment, Viper’s leader was standing on the top of the SUV. He seemed to be saying something to his men.
After the leader gave his lecture, the other members of Viper who were scattered around immediately formed organized teams.
Their dejected aura had vanished.
Ye Wei was rather provoked when she saw this scene. She couldn’t help but prop up her gun and aim at Viper’s leader, who was lecturing his men.
“What do you want to do?”
Wu Peng broke into a cold sweat when he saw what she was doing. There were now 50 to 60 people gathered around the armored SUV.
The other party would definitely swarm over and eliminate them if Ye Wei opened fire.
However, Ye Wei remained unmoved. “Since I can’t capture him alive,” she said, “I’ll just have to kill him. Find an escape route. I’ll retreat immediately after I open fire.”
“You’re mad, you’re mad! I’ll definitely be killed by you someday.”
Wu Peng understood Ye Wei’s personality. She wouldn’t change her mind now that she had decided on her idea. All he could do was search for an escape route.
Ye Wei took a deep breath and relaxed. She kept her eye on the leader’s head and aimed at the silver token on his helmet. Then, she slowly pulled the trigger.
A gunshot rang out, and Viper’s leader, who had been standing on the top of the car, immediately fell.
The other men who had been standing around the car immediately slipped into chaos and spread out in search of the sniper.
Ye Wei was elated when she saw that she had hit her target in one shot. However, she was only happy for a few seconds before she saw the leader of Viper stagger and stand up.
“What kind of helmet could be that bulletproof?!”
Ye We became flustered. She immediately lifted her gun, took aim, and fired. She aimed at his heart this time.
However, she wasn’t in peak condition, and she couldn’t hit her target in two consecutive shots.
By now, the members of Viper had already locked onto Ye Wei’s position because of the shots she’d fired.
“Run quickly! We’ll be dead meat if we drag this out.”
Wu Peng grabbed Ye Wei’s arm and forcefully pulled her up from the ground. He started to sprint along the route he’d found previously.
The members of Viper were immediately in hot pursuit.
They heard a flurry of gunshots behind them. Countless bullets flew past them.
Fortunately, they were on a small dirt hill, which meant the enemy couldn’t hit them easily because of the inclined angle.
They got over the small hill, temporarily moving out of the enemy’s sight.
Wu Peng quickly connected to the Bird with his phone and searched the surrounding terrain for a safe route.
However, before he could closely examine his surroundings, the members of Viper had already caught up to them.
He quickly put away his phone and continued running for his life.
However, neither Wu Peng nor Ye Wei knew the area, so they could only run like headless cockroaches.
“We can’t just keep running. We’re finished the moment we run out of stamina,” Wu Peng said anxiously.
Suddenly his phone rang.
Who could be calling him at this time?
He pressed on the wireless earpiece in his ear and heard Elsa’s voice.
“Brother Peng! I’m following you with the Bird scouting drone. I’ve already found an escape route for you. Listen to my instructions.”
