Chapter 4: Ate Plain Buns

Wu Peng casually flipped through a few weapons and was completely clueless about the names of some of the weapons.
Judging from the pictures, he felt that the weapons looked technologically advanced and that they would have extraordinary power.
“I can’t produce them at the moment. I must have not completed some prerequisite condition.” Wu Peng murmured to himself as he rubbed his chin.
He still did not have a weapon that he was comfortable using, which was dangerous in a post-apocalyptic world.
Fortunately, there were still no monsters that had appeared in the outside world.
Wu Peng flipped the weapon production interface to the very first page and finally saw a few weapons that he could produce.
[Dagger: requires five points and could be upgraded to become a Refined Steel Dagger].
This was a necessity for survival. It was short, small, and easy to carry.
“Produce!” When Wu Peng finished speaking, a black dagger appeared on the silver-white production station.
He grabbed it and played with it for a moment before he strapped the dagger on his right thigh.
Once again, he tapped the weapon production interface, and his gaze landed on the hot weapons.
The M1911 Handgun had an 11.43mm caliber and required 50 points. It could be fitted with other parts in the future.
This gun was a classic among handguns. It had average power, but it was enough for self-defense for the time being.
The bullets it used required copper to produce, and he could create 10 rounds with one point.
“Produce!”
A ray of white light flashed on the production station and a handgun appeared.
Wu Peng picked up the handgun and deftly took it apart before he put it back together again and loaded the 50 bullets it came with into the clip.
Now that he had both a dagger and a handgun, Wu Peng thought for a moment before he found the Military Tactical Vest option in the production station and spent 50 points to produce it.
Once the Military Tactical Vest was produced, he put it on and equipped both the clip and the handgun onto the vest.
Wu Peng had also wanted to produce a rifle but found it too eye-catching when he thought about it. He might get into trouble if a law enforcer or a bandit saw him.
Additionally, he did not have very much copper left. His reserves could not hold up to the copper required for the bullets.
With these weapons as a form of self-defense, Wu Peng decided to scout around in the outside world. He might be able to find other survivors.
With the existence of the Mechanical System, Wu Peng did not have to worry about survival for the time being.
It would be better if he could help more people.
He put on his protective gear, went to the surface, took out his binoculars, and looked around.
He had already scouted the one-kilometer area around him many times and noticed his surroundings were dead silent.
He saw a giant black stone mountain in the distance that was left behind after the impact of the meteor.
To think that the meteor would leave behind such a large mountain after such an intense impact, it was imaginable just how large the meteor was when it had just crashed into the area.
Wu Peng was able to resist the impact with his shelter, but that might not be the case for the other civilians and their shelters.
Perhaps, there were no longer any survivors in the city other than those in the official shelters.
Wu Peng’s heart became overcome with emotion when he thought about that.
He scouted his surroundings for some time and only managed to pick up the remains of a few cars.
He carried the fragments back to the shelter. He was able to turn the scrap steel into steel blocks just by placing them into the production station.
“Recycled scrap steel. Points +20.” The notification from the system rang out.
Wu Peng nodded, as that was within his expectations. Otherwise, he would not have wasted the effort of carrying the steel back to the shelter.
His stomach let out a rumble of protest. It had been six hours since his last meal.
He headed to the nursery where the wheat was about to mature.
He would no longer have to exchange his points for canned food after he harvested his first batch of wheat. He might be able to grow a few vegetables to improve the quality of his rations.
He felt as though his sense of taste was about to degrade after consuming canned food every day.
However, he still had to rely on canned food today.
He arrived in front of his refrigerator and tapped open the food interface of the system. One can of food required one point.
Wu Peng obtained two cans of food and opened the fridge door. He took out the cans and pried them open with his dagger before finishing its contents in a few gulps and placed the empty cans back in the fridge.
The system was rather stingy. It prevented Wu Peng from recycling the cans as a way to obtain materials.
He had to place the cans back into the fridge for recycling; otherwise, he would no longer be able to purchase the canned food in the future.
Wu Peng laid on his bed and looked at the ceiling feeling extremely bored.
Humans are social animals and would develop mental disorders if they did not interact with other humans for an extended period of time.
He could participate in forums on the Internet or watch television in the past to pass the time. Now that the satellite signal receiver was damaged, Wu Peng had completely lost contact with the outside world.
He fell asleep unknowingly.
…
The next day, the system reminded him of the points he gained on time.
Wu Peng consumed some canned food before he put on his protective gear and scouted the surface again.
Unfortunately, he did not encounter any living person. Instead, all he found were a few remains.
“I’ll be happy if I encounter even an animal,” Wu Peng muttered to himself.
…
Half a month passed like that, and Wu Peng had amassed 1,000 points.
Wu Peng was punctual as if he was reporting to work every day as he scouted the surface after he woke up.
Unfortunately, he did not come across any living creatures, and he still could not connect to the satellite signal.
The isolation had started to gnaw on Wu Peng’s spirit.
The only thing he found solace in was that the wheat in his nursery had finally matured.
He looked at the yellow wheat and let out a smile that had been gone from his face for a long time before he harvested the wheat and placed it on the production station.
He then used two points to dehusk and process the wheat that turned it into powdery, white flour.
He finally saw flour once again. Wu Peng had a tear in the corner of his eye.
He carefully placed the wheat into a bag and then the bag into the fridge.
He then chose to produce buns and heard a wave of activity within the fridge, opening the door after the noise had stopped.
The flour in the bag had been transformed into individual plain buns.
“Gulp!” Wu Peng let out a strange cry of excitement.
He picked up a plain bun, bit down hard into it, and felt a wave of sweetness on his tongue.
This was the first time Wu Peng felt a plain bun be this delicious. He polished off three plain buns in one sitting.
Wu Peng laid down on his bed and felt satisfied with his meal.
“Successfully created plain buns. Points +20.” The notification of the system rang out.
This made Wu Peng feel even more comfortable; he was able to earn points even while he ate his buns. It was like hitting two birds with one stone.
He slept comfortably.
…
A new day arrived.
After eating, Wu Peng routinely put on his protective gear and headed to the surface.
This time, he carried five plain buns with him and was prepared to scout a longer distance.
He took out his binoculars and surveyed the surroundings before he decided to advance toward the black stone mountain.
Ever since ancient times, otherworldly meteorites have always made for great crafting materials.
He might be able to unlock a few high-level items if he managed to get a few pieces of the meteorite back into his shelter.
He walked for about an hour and saw four human figures in the distance.
It had been more than half a month since he saw another living person. Wu Peng felt a little agitated.
However, as a way of caution, he still took out his binoculars to observe these people from a distance.
He saw the four people crowded around the base of the satellite signal receiver, and one of them was maneuvering around a device in his hand.
“Are they trying to repair the signal receiver?” he asked himself quietly.
This idea made Wu Peng even more excited.
