Chapter 31: Giant Mutated Mice
Bang! Bang! Bang! After aiming at the pigeons, Lorne took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. As the gunshots sounded, the pigeons in the sky slowly fell to the ground.
Gun fighting was undoubtedly very powerful. Lorne was able to knock down the ten pigeons immediately, but the remaining pigeons changed their formation quickly because they heard the sound of gunshots, making it difficult for Lorne to aim.
*Coo coo coo* The anxious cry of a pigeon sounded in the sky above Lorne. Clearly, that pigeon had discovered Lorne’s location and was charging straight at him.
“Whitey, hide quickly.” In the midst of danger, Lorne quickly called for Whitey to hide further away. Meanwhile, Lorne rolled and dodged the pigeon’s attack.
When the other pigeons noticed Lorne, they also charged straight towards him.
Chiii
.
Seeing that Lorne was about to be in danger, Whitey let out a long cry and flew towards the group of pigeons!
“Whitey, come back quickly. It’s dangerous.” Lorne realized that Whitey did not listen to his advice to hide. Instead, it flew towards the pigeons alone. Worried that it would be in danger, he quickly called it back.
But this time, Whitey clearly would not listen to Lorne. Instead, it charged straight at the pigeons.
Just as Lorne thought that Whitey would be injured by the pigeons, Whitey quickly approached a pigeon and ended its life with a wave of its claws.
When the remaining pigeons wanted to charge at Whitey, it flapped its wings and flew a little further away. Then, Whitey used its speed to move in and out while killing the pigeons.
Lorne did not expect the usually gentle and cute Whitey to be so ferocious in the sky. Whitey used its speed and sharp claws to quickly harvest the pigeons’ lives.
Soon, the ten pigeons fell to the ground one after another. Whitey also flew down from the sky and landed on Lorne’s arm.
“Good job, Whitey. So, you’re that powerful,” Lorne said to Whitey as he stroked its wings.
Hearing Lorne’s praise, Whitey raised its head proudly.
“Haha, then we will be battle companions in the future.”
Lorne had thought that Whitey was not suitable for battle. Even though Whitey had displayed astonishing destructive power in front of him, he only wanted Whitey to stay by his side safely and not let it encounter any danger.
But today, the battle between Whitey and the pigeons refreshed Lorne’s understanding. This made him realize that not only could Whitey accompany him, but it could also fight and grow together with him.
He decided that he had to consider Whitey’s combat strength in the future. Moreover, based on the current situation, Whitey’s combat strength could not be underestimated.
“Whitey, let’s go get the crystal cores,” Lorne said excitedly to Whitey as he looked at the corpses on the ground. The corpses on the ground were all crystal cores. It was better to take out these crystal cores quickly since they were in the wild.
Lorne walked forward and cut open the head of a mutated pigeon with his dagger, finding a crystal core the size of a soybean in its head.
Looking at the small crystal core in his hand, and comparing it to the goat’s crystal core, he realized that the size of the crystal core should correspond to the strength of the creature.
Right on the heels of that, Lorne searched for the crystal cores in the remaining pigeon corpses. Ten minutes later, all the mutated pigeons were destroyed by Lorne, and the crystal cores were collected.
“Alright, Whitey, let’s continue. We have to rush to the city center before nightfall. It would be terrifying to spend the night in the wilderness.” Lorne put the gathered crystal cores in his bag and said to Whitey.
After encountering many types of wild creatures, Lorne realized that this wasteland was not that safe. Therefore, he planned to reach the city center as soon as possible and rest there.
Fortunately, there were no issues in the path ahead. Perhaps because they had encountered enough monsters today, God could not bear to see Lorne suffer. After walking for a few hours, Lorne and Whitey entered the city center.
They walked into a mart. It was quite intact, although it could not be said the same for the building opposite it. The twenty-story building opposite the mart had now become about ten-story.
Lorne walked to the cigarette counter.
Bang!
The locked counter was smashed open by Lorne with the butt of the M4A1 gun. He took out a box of cigarettes and lit one.
Whoo. It was a nostalgic feeling.
Because of the announcement of the apocalypse, Lorne had used his money to buy food and other survival resources, not something as extravagant as cigarettes. Now that he had taken a puff of the cigarette, he felt energized.
The past ten days or so of the apocalypse had caused him to be mentally exhausted. This exhaustion made him feel a little relieved after taking a puff of the cigarette.
After finishing a cigarette, Lorne picked up the most expensive cigarettes in the cabinet and put them in his pocket.
“Whitey, let’s go and see if there’s anything to eat in this mall. We’ll stay here tonight.”
Lorne searched the mart. Soon, he found the section where the food was placed.
However, this section puzzled Lorne. This mart was only a small mart. Previously, when the country was gathering resources, they usually targeted large stores. Logically speaking, this mart’s resources should not be so empty.
Also, Lorne found that the living essentials section was a little strange. The blankets were all gone, but everything else was still there.
“There were others here,” Lorne thought when he saw such a strange sight.
Because the cold wave happened after the disaster, someone must have not taken the weather into consideration when building the shelter. Therefore, when the weather turned cold, that person took the blankets and left.
After realizing this, Lorne was vigilant. He slowly explored the mart section by section. After completely exploring the mart, he realized that there were no signs of anyone living there.
Lorne found a small room adjoined to the mart and arranged some simple protective and warning measures. He then asked Whitey to come in and rest for the night.
At night, Lorne and Whitey ate the food they brought from their shelter.
Lorne found many heaters in the store and placed them beside Whitey, in case it got frostbitten in this cold weather. The two slept like that.
Ding!
The warning measure he took suddenly sounded. Lorne immediately sat up. He could tell that it was a warning device he had set up. Who had touched it? Whitey also woke up because of Lorne’s movement.
Bang bang! There was a sudden sound of something hitting the door. Lorne stood up and slowly walked to the door with the Desert Eagle.
Squeak squeak. There was actually another sound outside the door. When Lorne listened carefully, he realized that it was the sound of a mouse. Did he attract mice here?
Lorne suddenly saw the food residue on the floor. He realized that these mice must have been attracted by the food that he had eaten last night.
Knowing that it was mice, Lorne was not so afraid. He put the Desert Eagle into his waist pocket and drew his dagger. Then, he slowly opened the door, planning to see how many mice were outside.
The mice outside seemed to be attracted by the sound of Lorne opening the door. Through the light, Lorne saw two mice outside.
However, these two mice were about twice the size of the mice that Lorne knew. They looked like small cats.
