Chapter 447: 165, before me, you have no secrets to tell_1
Patriotic?
If Lin Mo hadn’t thoroughly investigated Johnson Foster and held a lot of intelligence about him, he might have actually been fooled by his hypocritical facade.
“Oh?”
With a smile on his face, Lin Mo noncommittally said, “Last year, the total profits from all your businesses amounted to 21.2 billion U.S. dollars, yet your tax payment was only a pitiful 20 million-plus U.S. dollars.”
“Mr. Foster, is this the way you express your love for your country?”
Johnson Foster looked at Lin Mo with eyes full of surprise and shock, unable to believe that he actually knew about his real financial income.
Compared to this, even bribing his driver and secretary was a trivial matter.
For a rich businessman of Johnson Foster’s stature, their wealth wouldn’t be under the name of a single individual, and the profits wouldn’t come from just one or two companies.
Each company had two sets of books, one for public records, and the other holding the true revenue figures.
Every accounting of the true books wasn’t done by a single group of people, but rather by different batches of people cross-checking with each other, so that not even the employees knew precisely what they were calculating.
Everything was for the sake of security.
The actual figures in the books and the tax payments were only known to two or three key core individuals a year.
Johnson Foster couldn’t fathom how this mysterious man from Grand Xia sitting beside him had gotten his hands on his real ledger.
If he were to spread it, allowing the public to learn about the Johnson family’s tax evasion, it would undoubtedly create an enormous uproar.
The tax institutions of America weren’t so easily fooled.
“Mr. Foster, your accounting is well done, but please believe me, in front of me, you have no secrets.”
Lin Mo knew what he was thinking and continued, “Including the things you did to your own brother in order to secure the Johnson family’s inheritance, I don’t need to repeat them, do I?”
“Pity your family members, who still think to this day that it was all just an accident.”
Johnson Foster’s pupils constricted, his expression shifting from shock to even greater shock, and even harbored a hint of murderous intent.
The man before him knew too much; if he wanted to ruin him, it would be all too easy.
The atmosphere in the van grew tenser, and Lin Mo ceased talking, quietly waiting for Johnson Foster to speak.
His psychological defenses had been shattered; there was no need to worry about his noncompliance.
After about two minutes of silence, Johnson Foster, as if all strength had been drained from him, completely lost his vigor and said weakly, “Friend, you’ve won… state your conditions, I will do my best to cooperate with you.”
Lin Mo shrugged and said with a smile, “Hey, buddy, actually, it’s not as complicated as you think. What I want you to do won’t harm America, nor will it make you my undercover agent.”
“As for what specifically, I’ll tell you when you walk into that office.”
Lin Mo was entirely confident that he could make Johnson Foster the Duke, but as for Chen Shanhe’s matter, it was still best that as few people knew about it as possible.
That old man was extremely sly; a slightest slip could potentially let him catch wind of it.
If he chose a different place to hide, it would be very troublesome for Lin Mo to find him.
After a moment of thought, Johnson Foster said helplessly, “It seems I never had the right to choose from the beginning, tell me, how do you plan to make me the Duke?”
“Or rather, how do you intend to make me stand out from the Liberal Party?”
“The other five candidates are backed by different interest groups, and they have already joined Ron DeSantis’s camp; I really can’t think of any way to break the game.”
“Don’t tell me you’re going to kill them all; believe me, even if you could do that, I wouldn’t come to a good end.”
“If you need my help, just ask.”
“If you’re not in a hurry, I think I should tell you some of the things I know.”
Since they were on the same boat now, Ron DeSantis didn’t mind letting Lin Mo have a clearer understanding of the current situation.
After all, Johnson Foster was a homegrown American tycoon and had been through two years of campaigning, so he certainly had a more comprehensive analysis of his opponents.
Listening could do no harm.
Lin Mo nodded, “I’d be happy to hear your analysis.”
Johnson Foster opened the liquor cabinet in front of his seat, took out a bottle of expensive red wine, poured a glass for himself and then for Lin Mo, saying, “Before we talk about business, I like to have a drink.”
Lin Mo didn’t take the glass, indicating him to go ahead.
Not insisting, Johnson Foster tilted his head back and drained the goblet of crimson wine in one gulp, took a deep breath, and said, “There are currently five guys in the Liberal Party ranked ahead of me.”
“As long as any one of them exists, it’s impossible for me to win.”
“The last three, who aren’t as entrenched, also lack major interest groups behind them; if you’re willing to pay a hefty price, it would be possible to persuade them to bow out of the competition.”
“The main problem is that Nikki Haley is currently ranked second, and behind her stands the Morgan Consortium, whose power I’m sure I don’t need to elaborate on.”
Lin Mo nodded, “I know them; a formidable bunch.”
Johnson Foster continued, “Compared to Nikki Haley, the number one ranked, Ron DeSantis, is an elder of the Liberal Party and the former governor of Florida, with Lockheed Martin Corporation standing behind him.”
