Chapter 23: What Are You Waiting For? Go, Now!
“That’s enough! We are not waiting for Gu Jin anymore. Let us eat our breakfast.” In the end, the old man snapped as he could not stand to hear her grumbling.
Hearing his words, Chen Hong stopped nagging.
However, her neighbors had overheard what she said earlier, though they could not make head or tail of what it was about.
They knew which ungrateful person Chen Hong was lambasting; it was none other than Gu Jin, the girl who had no blood ties with the Gu Family.
They just had no idea why Chen Hong was so mad today; she had never shown so much dislike toward the girl before.
When Gu Jin and An Mingji reached home, Chen Hong had stopped grumbling long ago and begun eating her breakfast in the house.
As Gu Jin stepped inside and heard voices in the kitchen, she brought the child along.
“Grandpa,” Gu Jin greeted, standing at the kitchen doorway.
She was never very close to this family of hers except for her grandfather.
“You’re back. Come, eat,” the old man said when he saw that she was home.
Chen Hong hissed as she glared at An Mingji, her face contorting.
When she saw the kid and thought of the days to come, she felt as if someone was going to slice her flesh and eat it.
Gu Jin’s eldest uncle, Gu Jiajie, and Gu Minmin glanced at Gu Jin before they continued to eat. No one said a word.
Gu Jin had gotten used to this atmosphere. She used to think that the family disliked her.
In fact, even without her, this family would have gone about their life the same way; the old man was eccentric, a man of few words, and he liked pipe-smoking.
Just like the old man, her eldest uncle was reticent, while Chen Hong, her aunt, enjoyed ranting.
Her cousin was crafty, no better than a hooligan, but he had never bullied her at home. Gu Minmin, her younger cousin, was a guileless and shy girl.
So, among all the family members, only her aunt liked to nag. Gu Jin used to avoid her like the plague, fearing that she might provoke her aunt and get an earful from her.
Now, it seemed that she was merely a straight-talker.
Thinking of this, Gu Jin’s expression became a lot gentler.
“Uncle, Jiajie, Brother Du needs your help to carry a wild boar at the mountain behind the village.”
Everyone was struck dumb when they heard what Gu Jin said, mainly due to the mention of a wild boar.
“Brother Du? You mean Du Aiqing?” the old man asked.
“Yeah.” Gu Jin nodded.
Gu Jiajie was befuddled. “Why us?” he asked, still chewing a mouthful of wheat bun in his mouth.
There was quite a distance between their house and the mountain. Du Aiqing could have simply found someone living under the foothill for help.
All eyes were on Gu Jin at the sound of the question.
“I was strolling at the foothill with An when Brother Du descended the mountain. Then we encountered the wild boar…” Gu Jin told them about what happened.
The Gu Family looked baffled as they heard what she said.
The first person who snapped out of bemusement was Chen Hong. Her eyes reddened at the thought of a wild boar that weighed over one thousand pounds. “What are you waiting for? Go now before the meat is gone!” she barked at the father and son.
It was a wild boar that they were talking about! It was meat!
No one could afford to eat meat unless it was a festive season. A pound of meat could be exchanged for half a month’s rations.
Chen Hong gave the father and son an urging push.
When Gu Jiajie came to his senses, he was already drooling big time.
Usually, the family could only eat meat during festive seasons, which was not satisfying at all.
