Chapter 26: A Cultured and Gracious Temperament
She took a bowl of porridge and placed it in front of him before she shoved a wheat bun into his hand.
“Is this enough for you?” Gu Jin asked.
Looking down at the food and hearing what Gu Jin said, An Mingji could no longer hold back his emotions.
“It-It’s enough…” He choked on his words.
Gu Jin heard his unnatural voice and knew how he felt. The kid had been treated like garbage in the village for many years. Finding something to eat was tough enough, let alone having a full stomach.
She had even seen him in her dreams eating tree bark on the mountain behind the village because he was too hungry.
That was something she had never seen before, and she felt sorry about it after she died in her past life.
Gu Jin sat beside An Mingji, patting him on the head. “Eat as much as you want. There’s more.”
“Okay.”
An Mingji took a big bite of the wheat bun. It was not like those spoiled ones that he had eaten in the past. It smelled good, and the taste of food spread in his mouth.
He held the bowl of corn porridge on the table and put it to his mouth. The hot porridge went down his throat and warmed his stomach.
Seeing that he did not free up his hands to peel the eggs, Gu Jin took one and cracked it on the table. Then, she deftly peeled the shell off and placed the smooth white egg in An Mingji’s bowl.
She did the same to the five eggs before she stopped.
She gave three of them to An Mingji and placed the remaining in her bowl.
A person could eat two eggs a day and absorb all the nutrients from the eggs. Eating more was unnecessary.
She gave the kid three because she wanted him to feel full and not have to endure hunger anymore.
After Gu Jin peeled all the eggs, she held her bowl of porridge in her hand and ate the porridge with the eggs.
The two of them ate quietly. Life had been rough for An Mingji for the past few years, but he was a cultured individual. He ate very quickly but not without manners.
Gu Jin glanced at him with complicated feelings in her eyes.
The kid came from a well-educated family. His grandmother also used to be from a wealthy family, but times were tough back then. Those who lived in that era had experienced class struggles.
After their family went into a decline, An Mingji’s grandmother was married off, and she moved to Blackmount Village.
Originating from a wealthy family, she had some savings, hence her life was still a lot better than that of many others.
An Mingji’s grandmother had given birth to two children. Unfortunately, the second child was sickly. He was An Mingji’s father, and he had passed away at thirty-something.
After An Mingji’s father died, his mother abandoned him.
It was his grandmother who raised and nurtured him, cultivating in him a quality that no other kids possessed. His cultured and gracious temperament stemmed from his education.
Despite having spent some rough years, the wild child’s tenacity remained, though this quality was less obvious in him now.
Sensing Gu Jin’s stare, An Mingji looked up at her with a pair of contented, sparkling eyes.
“Finish it quickly. I’m going to bring you to see the village head.” Gu Jin smiled at him.
An Mingji did not ask why and just continued to eat his meal.
Outside, Du Aiqing and the Gu Family had worked out how to split the wild boar among them.
Gu Jin had told them earlier that if it had not been for Du Aiqing, the wild boar could have hurt someone and escaped.
So the old man proposed to split the wild boar equally between the two families.
Naturally, Du Aiqing did not agree with this and only asked for one-third of it.
In the end, Du Aiqing only took one-third of the wild boar and junglefowl, leaving behind the rest, including the deer.
