Chapter 35: The Gus Are Against It
“Gu Jin is cooking.”
The old man walked toward the kitchen as he spoke.
In the kitchen, Gu Jin had cut the wild boar’s head into small pieces and put them all in another large pot before she poured in the broth from the first cooking pot.
There were over twenty pounds of meat from the wild boar’s head in the pot.
“What is that nice-smelling dish you’ve cooked, Gu Jin?”
Chen Hong walked past her daughter at the doorway and entered the kitchen.
Gu Jin looked back at her aunt and stepped aside. “Stewed wild boar head. I’m thinking about selling it in the provincial city.”
When Chen Hong first saw the stewed meat in the pot, she had wanted to taste it. However, the moment she heard what Gu Jin said, her expression changed.
“What did you just say?”
Chen Hong looked as if she was about to eat Gu Jin alive for saying something unpardonable.
Gu Jin looked at Grandpa Gu, her uncle, and her cousins, who were now all in the kitchen, and repeated herself, “I am thinking about selling this dish in the provincial city.”
The Gus’ expressions turned solemn once they heard what she said, except for Gu Jiajie, who looked at her with a strange, complicated expression.
Her uncle had always been a guileless man. Upon hearing her declaration, his face turned grave and he could not help but speak his mind. “Mind what you say, Gu Jin. This is speculation and profiteering, the penalty of which is death.”
Gu Jin smiled. “It’s not as bad as you think now, Uncle. Hua Country is encouraging its people to increase their income. It’s okay as long as we don’t conduct businesses that cross the line.”
“No, you can’t!” Chen Hong suddenly yelled.
“How will the villagers look at us if they find out? They will censure us behind our backs! No. I’m saying no!”
Grandpa Gu’s face did not look any better either. He did not speak up for Gu Jin this time.
Speculation and profiteering were no laughing matters. A few years back, someone from the neighboring village had gone to become a profiteer in the provincial city. That person was supposedly caught and executed later on.
Gu Jin looked at them, her smile fading. “I’m going to sell it no matter what. Right now, many people are setting up stalls in the provincial city. It’s especially easy to rent a stall at the bus station. I will surely go for it if I have the money.
“I’m considering attending high school in Wanhai City. An will go with me. We are going to need a lot of money for that, so don’t stop me. I need to make money for my education.
“In two years, Hua Country will encourage its people to set up businesses. By then, there will be tons of people doing it. I promise that there won’t be any problems. I’ll disguise myself carefully so no one will recognize me. If all of you still don’t agree with it and are afraid of being looked down upon, An and I can move out.”
Setting up stalls for business was speculation and profiteering, a crime. You would be labeled as a profiteer, and no matter how much money you made, people would still look down on you.
However, unbeknownst to many, they were also living in an era when making money was the easiest. As long as you used your brain and capabilities, achieving success was easy-peasy.
Many wealthy people in the coming era became wealthy because they had seized the opportunity in this era.
Therefore, Gu Jin would not give up on setting up a stall.
“You’re still thinking about studying in the city? Do you know much it costs? You are not going to afford it even if you have a stall!”
Chen Hong might have lived in Blackmount Village, but she mingled and gossiped with other women in the village, so she knew that studying in the city cost a bomb.
She heard that it cost a few thousand yuan, and she had never seen, with her own eyes, so much money in her life.
Hearing that Gu Jin wanted to study in the city, she thought that the kid had to be dreaming. She was too idealistic.
