Chapter 5: The Hatchery
No class today?
Everyone sat quietly, waiting for the teacher to continue.
“We’re going to the hatchery,” Ye Wenqian said with a smile.
The hatcheries were one of the most important facilities in Yanhuang and they were spread all over the country.
They were mainly responsible for pet beast breeding and pet beast egg incubation.
They also provided registration services for new Beastmasters and all kinds of origin birth realm pet beasts.
“There are two things I want to do this time. First, I want to collect the illustrated handbook. Second, those students who haven’t signed a contract can collect a pet beast,” Ye Wenqian explained concisely.
“The college entrance exam is not far away. I hope you can make the best of your time.”
Her gaze swept back and forth between the students at the apprentice Beastmaster realm.
“People without a contract have one chance to receive a pet beast for free?”
Lin Yu thought to himself that this benefit was not bad.
Although the pet beasts they stood to get were all basic ones…
If he had not contracted Xiaozi, he might have considered it.
“The main point is the illustrated handbook.” He looked a little expectant.
The Beastmaster illustrated handbook was a necessity for home and travel. It contained information on almost all the known pet beasts of humans.
It could automatically identify the opponent’s information in a battle and could also catch up with unfamiliar pet beasts as soon as possible.
He could only download it to his phone at the hatcheries that were officially authorized.
The Beastmasters were very efficient. They didn’t have anything to bring with them, so they left as they wished.
For most students, no matter what they were doing, as long as they didn’t have to go to a class, it was enough to make them happy.
The group of people sat on the school’s smart bus and set off as if they were on a trip.
It was half an hour later.
When they arrived, the students from the class next door were already there.
“So one class at a time, right?”
Lin Yu got out of the car and looked at the huge round building in front of him.
A series of strangely-shaped windows decorated the exterior. Even in the day, they still bloomed with light, making it look as strange as an alien building.
As they entered the hatchery, they saw a wide hall with service counters on both sides.
In the depths of the hall, there were all sorts of strangely-shaped machines.
There were people coming and going inside, and countless staff members were busy.
“Those who have downloaded the illustrated handbook, come over here,” a sweet voice sounded.
Lin Yu followed the rest and handed his phone to a young lady at the service desk.
“Hello, may I know how long it will take?” Lin Yu asked politely.
“It usually takes about an hour.” Perhaps it was because Lin Yu was handsome and polite, the young girl squinted and smiled.
“That long?” Lin Yu was shocked.
Ye Wenqian had already taken some students to contract their initial pet beasts, and Lin Yu was strolling in the hall, bored.
“This is a petri dish?”
He stood in front of a cylindrical glass column, and through the window, he saw that it was filled with some kind of green liquid.
“This is an incubator.” The staff member explained, ” It’s especially used for eggs that can’t be hatched by conventional means.”
Lin Yu watched with great interest as he sank a pet beast egg with gray spots on the surface into the water.
Bubbles appeared in the incubator, making burbling sounds.
At this moment, a burst of cheers attracted Lin Yu’s attention.
He turned his head and saw a strange-looking machine.
It was a ring-shaped instrument. On one side was a standing platform like a scale, and on the other side was a pillar like a thermometer.
There were many dim stars on it.
There was also a display screen next to the pillar.
There were many people gathered nearby.
“What’s that for?” Lin Yu asked curiously.
“That’s a device used to test one’s potential,” the staff member explained.
Lin Yu saw an unfamiliar face with dreadlocks walk up to him. He figured he should be from the class next door.
He summoned his pet, a jackal-like creature that was standing upright with a cunning smile on its face. It stood on the tablet under the command of its master.
A few seconds later, the stars on the pillar began to light up. As it trembled, two stars shone.
A few lines of words appeared on the screen.
[Name]: Gray Plague Jackal
[Rank]: The origin birth realm-stage two
[Potential]: Two stars
“Two stars on potential. It’s considered the average level,” the staff member commented.
Stars meant potential.
Two stars meant that the pet beast would have no problem reaching the transcendent realm, the second realm after the origin birth realm. The process would be smooth. It only needed the accumulation of spiritual power.
However, it was more difficult to advance to the third level, the extreme transformation realm, and it was even more difficult to advance further.
It wasn’t impossible, but it would require double the effort and a lot of opportunities.
After listening to his explanation, Lin Yu suddenly became interested.
“Isn’t this quite interesting? I’m bored and can kill some time,” he thought.
He found that most of their pet beasts were two stars.
A small portion of those who had reached three stars would receive a round of applause when they showed up on stage and the Beastmasters’ faces would flush like champions.
“That’s Ye Tian?”
Lin Yu’s eyes lit up as he looked at the next Beastmaster.
He was wearing a white shirt, tall and slender, with a delicate and handsome face.
Under a pair of thick and black eyebrows, his bright and clear eyes stirred the hearts of countless people present.
However, his face was as cold as ice. Even though he was smiling, he still exuded a coldness that put people off.
He strode over, and the people around him cleared way for him.
“This guy is quite handsome. He’s almost as good-looking as me,” Lin Yu said in surprise.
Ye Tian drew out an array, summoning a two-headed wolf that was even taller than him. It was two meters tall.
Its silver-white fur was shiny and smooth, and its dark green eyes were fierce and sharp.
Its two heads were raised high, revealing terrifying fangs, and it exuded the aura of a king.
Even from a long distance, Lin Yu could clearly feel the power it emitted.
Seeing it jump up, the crowd held their breath.
The stars on the instrument began to jump one by one, and in an instant, four of them lit up, reaching a height that no one had ever reached before.
The wolf howled.
The fifth star began to flash.
Although it was only flickering, the light was filling the entire star little by little.
[Name]: Two-headed Windbreaker Wolf
[Rank]: The origin birth realm-stage seven
[Potential]: Five stars
The panel data was finally produced.
The whole place was in an uproar.
“Five-star potential!” someone couldn’t help but exclaim.
“He deserves to be the number one in the entire school.”
“I don’t think there’s a second pet beast with this kind of potential in our school.”
The group of onlookers felt they were running out of breath.
“Five stars. Doesn’t that mean that it wouldn’t face any racial bottlenecks before it reached the fifth major realm?” they thought.
Ye Tian’s cold face broke into a smile.
He called back the two-headed wolf and left amidst the discussion.
“Is there anyone else who wants to run a test?”
The staff member asked loudly when he saw that nobody came out.
The students around them looked at each other and fell silent.
At this point, no one wanted to go up. Even if they were three stars, compared to Ye Tian, who had just finished the test, they were like nobodies.
“No one else? Should I try?”
Lin Yu blinked his eyes.
This was a display of power…
Or it was a good opportunity to see how much potential Xiaozi had.
“We shouldn’t be any worse than that two-headed wolf, right?”
He ran over eagerly.
“Look, someone’s coming.”
Lin Yu’s action attracted a lot of attention.
“He’s so brave. If he goes up now, he’ll definitely be compared to Ye Tian.”
“Isn’t that Lin Yu?” His classmates also saw him.
“Excuse me, coming through.” Li Yong and the others saw that Lin Yu was about to go up, so they hurriedly pushed their way to the front.
Lin Yu stood in front of the testing machine and took a deep breath.
“Xiaozi, come out.”
Purple light rippled like waves, and a beautiful woman walked out of it.
Even though she was being stared at by many people, she turned a blind eye to it and remained calm.
A pair of black wings spread out, and everyone’s hearts trembled for some reason. It was as if they felt the throb of death.
“Is that a pet beast?”
“I think so. Didn’t you see that pair of wings?”
“It’s just like a human.”
“No, it’s much better looking than humans.”
It was noisy and everyone’s eyes were wide open as they looked at the beautiful figure in the middle of the field.
They saw a scene that they had never seen before in the past ten years of their lives.
