Chapter 3: Cat and Fish

Fu Rui repeated the process a few times and placed almost ten vine fishing lines by the river.
He had to keep an eye on the movements of the vines when using this fishing method. After all, the thorns were not as sturdy as fishing hooks. Thus, he had to keep an eye on them to prevent the fish from escaping without him knowing.
Yuan found this very novel.
“Rui, what are you doing?”
“I’m fishing.”
“Fishing? Do you mean we can catch fish with these soft branches?”
“Yeah.”
“Really?” Yuan didn’t really believe this. The hunting team in the tribe had never taught these things.
At this moment, one of the vines was tugged twice. Fu Rui quickly went up to pull out the wood and reeled in the line.
Very quickly, a large fish that was almost as large as two palms jumped out of the water and was dragged ashore.
“Wow!”
Yuan’s eyes lit up, “It’s true!”
Facts were more convincing than explanations. Fu Rui was lucky this time and happened to encounter a small group of migratory fish. Soon, the remaining dozen or so vine fishing lines moved.
Unfortunately, most of the bait had been removed. In the end, he only caught three fish.
However, their sizes were ideal and were enough for two people to eat.
“Yuan, do you have a stone saber?”
“Yes!” Although Yuan did not know what Fu Rui wanted to do, she still handed it over immediately.
Fu Rui scraped off the fish scales and took out the internal organs before washing the fish. Then, he twisted some dried grass into a small rope and strung the three fish together. He smiled and said, “It looks like we won’t be hungry tonight.”
“Do I get a share too?” Yuan, who had been starving for half a day, was drooling.
“Of course.” Fu Rui reached out to stroke Yuan’s smooth hair.
Yuan did not mind such intimate actions at all. She leaned into Fu Rui’s embrace and took another step forward to smell the fresh fragrance of the fish. She was drunk with happiness and could not help but open her mouth to take a big bite.
However, Fu Rui took the fish away at this moment.
Yuan missed her bite. She blinked her big, confused eyes and pouted as she looked into Fu Rui’s eyes.
“Meow… didn’t you say I had a share too? I’m going to eat just one… ah, no, half a fish works too…”
In her azure blue eyes, there was a hint of grievance, a hint of desire, and most of all, a gentle expression of friendliness.
No!
She was too cute!
Fu Rui couldn’t help but want to tease her. He pointed to his cheek and said, “Give me a kiss and I’ll give you a bite of the fish.”
“Kiss? What do you mean by kiss? Meow~” Yuan did not understand what this word meant.
Fu Rui couldn’t help but feel a little excited. “It’s… it’s touching the other party with your lips. It’s a way to express your love.”
Yuan didn’t hesitate in the slightest. Her tender lips quickly closed in on Fu Rui, leaving a faint trace on his face.
However, she did not stop here. After all, a kiss was equivalent to a bite of a fish, but how could a mere bite satisfy her? Hence, she continued to kiss Fu Rui’s cheeks like a chick pecking at grains.
In the end, her lips landed on Fu Rui’s. Not only that, she even stuck out her soft and wet tongue to gently lick his lips.
Fu Rui was stunned.
Meanwhile, Yuan tilted her head and blinked innocently.
Fu Rui reached out a trembling hand and touched his lips in disbelief. There was still the scent and warmth left behind by Yuan.
This was actually real!
He wasn’t dreaming!
He could not believe that he actually gave his first kiss to a cat-eared girl!
“Why… why are you licking me…” Fu Rui started to stutter.
“This is how my tribe expresses their love, meow ~”
Yuan flashed a sweet smile and went forward to kiss Fu Rui’s lips before licking them. “I’ve done both of them. Doesn’t that mean that I’ve expressed twice my love?”
Fu Rui almost suffocated.
“Can we eat now, meow ~” Yuan pouted. “I’m so hungry…”
“Yes— Ah, no, no. The fish hasn’t been cooked yet. There are parasites in the freshwater fish, so they can’t be eaten raw.”
Fu Rui took nearly half a minute to calm himself down. He told himself that this was the behavior of a cat and that he shouldn’t take it to heart.
However, he was facing a cat-eared girl who was basically no different from a human being. Furthermore, she was so beautiful and innocent, and she was sticking to him. How could a hot-blooded man like him stand this?
Fu Rui’s occasional gaze at Yuan’s graceful figure changed slightly.
Meanwhile, upon hearing that the fish still could not be eaten, Yuan could not help but pout.
“We can’t get the fish cooked right now as only a witch can bring fire to the tribe. However, it’s too bad she died some time ago, so there’s no fire left in the tribe now…”
She looked pleadingly at Fu Rui. “Rui, give it to me… Trust me, it’ll be fine.”
Fu Rui simply shook his head. Making fire during the primitive period was indeed a big problem as it completely depended on when a natural fire occurred in the forest. The flames would then spread out and be collected by the tribe.
The civilizations here had yet to comprehend the art of making fire. Thus, they were forced to eat raw meat that was not clean enough.
However, they could not be immune to parasites just by having a strong resistance. For the sake of Yuan’s body, he had to cook the fish before eating it.
It just so happened that he had previously collected tinder, which was an ideal type of fuel. Thus, he immediately began to make preparations.
Fu Rui brought Yuan back to the forest to search for the necessary materials to make a fire.
He planned to use the bow drill method to start a fire as it would save him a lot of energy.
This method required a thin and hard wooden stick, a sufficiently dry and equally hard piece of wood, and a wooden stick with an arc.
Other than that, they also needed ropes.
Dried grass was not flexible enough. Although it was dry enough and had good friction, it could easily break if it was used as a rope.
Thus, Fu Rui had no choice but to use the stone knife to cut at the unknown trees in an attempt to find bark that was flexible enough.
After a long time, he finally found a rather ideal material.
He tore the bark into thin strips and weaved it into a thicker rope before tying it at the ends of the curved wooden stick.
Then, he used a stone knife to dig out a small pit on the dry wood. He also carved out a ditch along the edge of the pit so that the sparks could fall into the tinder below.
Finally, he polished the thin stick into the drill rod he needed. After that, he took the rope attached to the curved stick and wrapped it around the center of the drill rod twice.
Then, Fu Rui held the curved wooden stick in one hand and aimed the drill rod at the dry wood with the other. After that, he stepped on the end of the wood that had been dug out.
Suddenly, he glanced at Yuan, who was holding the three fish and about to take a bite of the fish.
“Yuan, don’t think about eating the fish secretly.”
Only then did Fu Rui remember that he was still missing something. He waved the drill rod in his hand and said, “Help me find a piece of wood and dig a hole in it. It should be about the same thickness as this.”
“Meow!”
With a red face, Yuan picked up a piece of wood from the ground and took the stone knife to do the work.
