Boyfriend For Hire - Chapter 4
Nice to meet you, I’m your boyfriend(2)
Yang Xiao didn’t get any sleep that night.
Her head was pounding in the morning and she knew that there was still a tough battle left to get through, but she was surprisingly still in a good mood.
The first thing she did was go home to change her clothes and carefully do her makeup. Yang Xiao’s movement awoke Tang Shuge, and she came out of her bedroom in a daze.
Tang Shuge was still holding her favorite pillow, and she was so sleepy that she could barely stay standing up. But she was too worried about Yang Xiao to stay asleep: “XiaoXiao, are you okay?”
“What could possibly be wrong with me?” Yang Xiao lowered her head and picked up her lipstick container. Her fingers brushed over a Dior 999, stopping to pick it up.
They say that you can tell a woman’s personality through her choice of lipstick color. For example, a light grapefruit color suits Tang Shuge because it makes her look very cute and lively, just like her personality.
But Yang Xiao prefers blood-red lipstick. It was just like her, strong, bold, and capable.
Yang Xiao looked in the mirror and swiped the lipstick over her lips, delicately outlining her cupid’s bow. The lipstick was smooth, painting her lips a striking bright red. She couldn’t find a trace of exhaustion on her face, and her eyes almost looked like they were sparkling.
Seeing that Yang Xiao was doing everything as usual, Tang Shuge was relieved. She rubbed her eyes and muttered sleepily, “I rented a boyfriend for you…Meet him at the gate of your parents’ neighborhood at 11:30. This was late notice and there weren’t any high-rated veteran boyfriends available, so I had to hire you a newcomer. But he looks really kind and lively in his photos, so there shouldn’t be an issue.
“Alright, thank you.” Without her best friend’s help, Yang Xiao wouldn’t have been able to solve that problem.
* * *
Yang Xiao got in her car, stepped on the gas, and sped to her parents’ house.
Her parents lived north of the city, but the TV station where she’s employed is far west of the city. In order to get a few more hours of sleep every morning and avoid driving halfway across the city to get home after working overtime, she moved out after graduation.
Tang Shuge was one of her middle school classmates. They rented an apartment together through “Internet Company 996” and usually had a housekeeper.
Yang Xiao drove a small red Buick, which wasn’t expensive, but she personally earned every penny used to purchase it. She didn’t want her family to have to help her. She was a pretty good driver and after drilling through a flood of traffic for more than half an hour, she arrived at the gate of her parent’s neighborhood.
She looked at her watch and it was only eleven o’clock—half an hour before her appointment with her rental boyfriend.
She pulled over, turned off the engine, and sat alone in the car, quietly organizing her thoughts.
Between yesterday and today, her seemingly perfect life had turned upside down in the blink of an eye.
But at least she personally got revenge against that scumbag, so that was cool, right?
Yeah, that was cool, and very satisfying too.
But she couldn’t help thinking about her relationship with Yu Huaibo over the past year.
She couldn’t understand how Yu Huaibo could treat her with nothing but love and attention, then be using the same techniques to play with other girls’ feelings at the same time.
Yang Xiao had never been a romantic person. On the contrary, in her life plan, her family, friends, and her career all came before “love”.
And yet, she’d fallen into a terrible relationship twice in a row, wasting time and feelings on scum.
She sighed and felt an overwhelming sense of exhaustion surge into her heart.
She’d obviously said that exquisite beauties never cry for scumbags, but she couldn’t control the tears coming out of her eyes. Yang Xiao sat in the car and cried silently for a little while, even crying off five of her new false eyelashes. It was like she could see the money leaving her, and she felt even more uncomfortable.
She was feeling down when she suddenly heard a noisy shout come from across the street.
The sound of applause and whistling mixed together, making Yang Xiao raise her head and look over subconsciously. Not too far away from her was the neighborhood basketball court, and a few boys were gathered there playing on the court.
Because this neighborhood was meant for families, the neighbors were all very familiar with each other. Yang Xiao recognized several of the young faces, all of whom were high school students from the same neighborhood. Time flies, it felt like just yesterday they were following her around like little farts, calling her “Sister XiaoXiao”. But in the blink of an eye, they all grew up into tall teenagers.
Among those high school students, there was a figure that was particularly eye-catching.
It was a tall young man, more than half a head taller than all the boys around him. Yang Xiao estimated that the young man had to be taller than 6 foot 2.
He was wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, and he had a head of short, fluffy hair that had a few beads of sweat dripping off the ends.
Like magic, it looked like the basketball was flying under his hands. It was a tricky angle, but he smoothly broke through the defensive line the high school students had formed. He rushed towards the basket with ease, and then jumped high and skillfully dunked the ball in.
After that, he grabbed the basket and hung off from it like a show-off. His body moved forward with the momentum and he fell back into the group with a light jump.
As soon as he landed, his teammates quickly surrounded him. They swarmed around him, high-fiving him one by one, celebrating the win.
He casually slung his arm around a teammate’s neck, laughing freely and radiating the unique air of youthful glee.
——They were incredibly loud, but that wasn’t a bad thing.
Yang Xiao’s tears had long stopped. She looked in the direction of the basketball court and unconsciously watched one game after another.
She’d never been interested in sports at all. At the age of fifteen or sixteen, Tang Shuge secretly fell in love with one of the school grasses. Every time he played basketball, she would drag Yang Xiao to watch the game, but Yang Xiao never liked it. She thought that it was really boring to watch boring guys bounce a boring ball all over the court. She thought it was better to go back and study instead.
So because of that, Yang Xiao hadn’t watched a basketball game in seven or eight years.
She never thought she would be sitting in her car and watching a basketball game today, just twelve hours after she broke up with her boyfriend.
But it turns out it’s not that she doesn’t like basketball—it’s that she doesn’t like badly played basketball.
Her eyes subconsciously followed the tall figure, watching the young man running up and down the court. The hot breeze blew through his fluttering hair, the very image of a handsome young man.
…Are all high school students this well developed nowadays?
She was thinking about this when her phone suddenly chimed.
She took it out and saw that it was Tang Shuge sending WeChat messages to her.
Sugar Sugar: Have you seen your rental boyfriend yet?
Sugar Sugar: [cute] [naughty]
Sugar Sugar: Woman, are you satisfied with what you’ve seen?
Yang Xiao: “…..”
Damn, she was so caught up watching that handsome guy that she forgot about why she was here.
Tang Shuge had sent the rental boyfriend’s phone number a while ago. Yang Xiao saw that it was already 11:30 and hurriedly called him.
The phone rang three times.
Dudu.
Dudu.
Dudu.
The call was picked up–
“Hello?” Yang Xiao was still staring at the basketball court as she called.
Coincidentally, the “slamdunk master” on the basketball court also walked to the sidelines and picked up his phone.
Yang Xiao withdrew her gaze and concentrated on the phone call.
“Hello sir, I’m…”
“I know,” a smooth baritone voice floated from the other end of the phone, and with a smile in his voice he said, “You’re my girlfriend.”
