Can’t Come Back - Chapter 3
The Duke’s son? It was a position beyond her scope of thought. Isn’t the Duke too high for a Baron family? When Berlia showed a bewildered look, Cadellin, who was in front of her, opened her eyes wide.
She asked, “Oh my! Young Lady, have you ever been in love with His Highness Cain?”
“Yes? Oh, that, that……”
Berlia couldn’t answer easily and mumbled. However, Cadellin had already noticed Berlia’s mind.
She said to Berlia with a bitter smile,
“Young Lady, it may sound presumptuous, but if you have His Highness Cain in your heart, you’d better give up quickly. Because it’s not something that low-ranking nobles like us can surpass. There are so many young ladies who have a crush on His Highness Cain. Among them, there are daughters of Count and Marquis.”
“As expected……”
When Berlia found out that Cain was a member of the duke’s family, she could no longer express her feelings. He is the second son of a Duke. To Berlia, who was only a Baron’s daughter on the outskirts, Cain was far, far, and unreachable.
About three months had passed since she started her unrequited love. One day, Berlia received an unexpected proposal from Dean.
If Berlia could be greedy, it would be better if the proposal came from his brother, Cain. Berlia had no choice but to worry about Dean’s marriage proposal. Because she secretly loved his brother.
But in fact, there was no room for her to worry. This was because the poor Baron family had no other choice but to accept the marriage proposal from the Duke family.
Then, another three months later, she married Dean, and Berlia became a family with Cain, whom she loved.
Since she was married to Dean, she had to clear up her mind about Cain.
So at first, she tried to stay away from Cain as much as she could. But as her relationship with her husband, Dean, began to grow apart, Berlia felt lonely.
“Good morning my treasure, Berlia. Just seeing my wife like this makes me happy.”
In the early days of marriage, he smiled, saying he was happy just to see her.
“……did you sleep well?”
After three months, he no longer smiled in front of Berlia.
“I love you, Berlia.”
He hugged her, said he loved her and fell asleep together.
“Why don’t we share a room?”
Six months later, there was no trace of affection.
“I’ll be back safely today. I hope you have a great day.”
The warm words of Dean,
“……I’ll be back.”
after a year, it became unheard of.
Three years had passed, and the more distant the relationship between Berlia and Dean, the more Berlia’s eyes turned to Cain again.
Even when she was eating like now, her eyes were fixed on him. When she was in the same room as Cain, she naturally glanced at him. When Cain and she were alone without her husband like now, the feelings she had before marriage seemed to increase.
However, her feelings must never be found out by anyone. When it was discovered, it was obvious that she would lose her status as a Duchess. The Duchess of Hildayden is in love with her husband’s brother. What kind of gaze would she receive? She was terrified just imagining it.
Berlia thought so and put the food into her mouth.
‘Besides, Cain doesn’t even remember me.’
Berlia wasn’t even sure if Cain remembered her, whom he briefly met outside the banquet hall three and a half years ago. For him, Berlia could have been just a passing, unremembered woman. If she wasn’t Cain’s sister-in-law, she wouldn’t even have a chance to talk to him like this.
Berlia laughed at herself. Once again, she had to clear up her mind.
She carefully set the tableware down and wiped her lips with a napkin.
She said, “I’ll leave first.”
“Oh, already?”
“I have no appetite……”
“Is that so? Then I will leave too.”
“Yeah? You don’t eat more?”
“I have a guest coming today. We are going to have tea later.”
“Who’s……the guest?”
With an anxious heart, Berlia asked Cain. If it is the guest he is talking about, then again……
“Lady Carlin will be visiting.”
Berlia’s expression hardened at his answer.
“What’s wrong, sister-in-law? What’s the problem……?”
“Oh, it’s nothing. Then I’ll go up first.”
It was difficult for Berlia to hide her hardened expression any longer. Before she continued to show him her stiff face, she quickly turned around and took a quick step back to her room.
‘Lady Carlin…… Then……again.’
Rumors that Cain had changed since the Duke of Hildayden married had spread widely. What the hell happened during the time she hadn’t seen Cain? He was changing the women he spent time with every month. In a few years, Cain had become a completely different person from his neat and reticent image. He was even rumored to be a debauched man who would not hesitate to bring women into the mansion.
The daughter of a Count, Lady Carlin, whom he had invited today, was also one of the women Cain brought into the mansion. She was not Cain’s fiancee, let alone his lover.
However, despite the rumors that the women he met were constantly changing, due to his beautiful appearance and background as a member of the duke’s family, the women who were clinging to Cain continued to overflow.
Everyone said Cain had changed. But, apart from being very open about the act of meeting women interchangeably, he is actually the same as before.
“Sister-in-law, you are beautiful today.”
Berlia knew it.
“Your complexion doesn’t look good. Did something happen, sister-in-law?”
He was still sweet.
“If you need my help, please let me know anytime.”
He was still very considerate.
So she could no longer understand Cain’s change.
However, just because he changed, Berlia had no authority to tell him why she became like this. There is nothing she can do other than be heartbroken by looking at the blonde lady who will come today.
In the afternoon, Lady Carlin came to visit. Berlia, the hostess, was compelled to go out to meet the guest who came to the mansion. She always welcomed the women who came to Cain as Duchess.
“Welcome, Lady Carlin. You have come a long way.”
Each time, as now, Berlia smiled at them and greeted them with a welcome.
“Oh, Duchess. You are so beautiful today. Especially, compared to your beautiful shiny blonde hair, I think my blonde hair is like faded straw.”
Lady Carlin greeted Berlia. She was wearing a dress that was more revealing than she usually wore at banquets. It meant that she would openly seduce Cain.
“Thank you. But Lady Carlin is beautiful, too.”
Berlia smiled as she said something she didn’t even want. There wasn’t a single corner of that woman that she liked, but she couldn’t express it openly. Because she was a guest visiting her husband’s brother.
Then, Cain arrived.
“Welcome, Lady Carlin.”
Cain’s greeting to Carlin was so blunt.
If there was one thing that gave Berlia some relief, it was that Cain was more kind towards Berlia than to Carlin.
‘Then, what’s so special about that? I guess he’s kind to me because I’m his family now. I’m his brother’s wife after all. It’s strange that he’s not friendly to me.’
The moment she realized this reality, she felt even more depressed.
“I missed you so much, Your Highness Cain.”
Carlin walked over to Cain with a voice full of excitement. When Cain didn’t respond, Carlin put her clearly visible chest in Cain’s arms.
“Let’s go up, Your Highness. Then we will go in to get some tea time, Duchess.”
He didn’t respond, but Carlin continued to speak without care. Carlin’s blonde hair fluttered. She wrapped her arms around Cain’s arm and went up to the second floor. Berlia looked at her enviously from behind.
‘As expected. This time it is a blonde again.’
The only thing in common that Berlia could easily notice was that all the women Cain brought were blonde.
Cain only invited blonde women into the mansion. And regardless of day or night, Cain entered his room and did not come out until the woman returned home. From the mansion’s maid to the stable keeper, there was no one who could not predict what would happen inside the closed door.
Also, the blonde women he brought were not limited to noblewomen. Occasionally there were women of commoners, and if a blonde maid came into the mansion, she was also included in the target.
Berlia, who did not want to see the maid leaving his room with a shy face, made all kinds of excuses to leave the mansion the next day.
Among the blonde women who had set foot in the Duke of Hildayden, Berlia was the only blonde woman who had not been able to enter Cain’s room. As she watched the two of them head towards Cain’s room, she thought,
‘Me too. I am blonde too.’
If I hadn’t been married, I would have been able to spend the night with Cain like that woman. This thought ran through Berlin’s mind.
‘Wait, there must be something wrong with my head for a moment. I’m a married woman. What did I just think about another man? Not anyone else, but my husband’s brother……!’
Berlia shook her head from side to side. It was a terrific mistake for Dean’s wife, Berlia, to have such feelings for her brother-in-law, Cain. Hoping for a relationship that goes beyond that was an absurd idea.
Berlia felt dirty for thinking like that.
