The next day, Song Qinghuan woke up at daybreak. She needed to pick up her household register booklet first if she wanted to get married. That meant that she needed to go home first.
But Song Qinghuan didn’t want to go home unless she needed to. If she went home, her stepfather would start asking her for money.
When she was twelve years old, her mother, Lu Meiyan, married her stepfather, Song Qiliang. She had to admit that her stepfather treated her alright and raised her well but he did everything so that he could “sell” her for a good price in the future.
When she was in senior high, Song Qiliang told her that it was pointless for a lady to go to university. He wanted to marry her off as quickly as possible. He had already found a husband for her and the betrothal gifts had all been prepared.
Her mother’s time and energy were all centered on her younger half-brother, Song Xiaotao. Everything she did was for her younger brother. She wasn’t able to fork out any more love for Song Qinghuan so she was left to grow up by herself. Her mother also believed there was no difference between marrying early or late since Song Qinghuan had to get married in the future anyway.
Fortunately, Yan Pingdan came back at that time and saved her. He helped her financially so that she could study at university.
Song Qinghuan returned home early in the morning to pick up her household register booklet. Her stepfather was willing to give it to her but he said that their family was having some trouble now and asked her to fork out some money.
His intentions were obvious. If she wanted her household register booklet, she needed to give him money first.
“Father, I just graduated from university and haven’t found a job. I don’t have money to give you.” Actually, Song Qinghuan had some money; Yan Pingdan left some for her.
But she wouldn’t give them to Song Qiliang. She understood Song Qiliang very well. He knew that she needed her household register booklet so if he found out about her wealth, he would make unreasonable demands. If that happened, the money she had wouldn’t be enough to satisfy him.
Song Qiliang pretended to act distressed and started playing the family card. “Qinghuan, you know that your mom and I only earn so much each month. Song Ci just started university so all our money is spent on him. We can’t even feed ourselves properly now. You can’t just leave us to die.”
Song Ci was Song Qinghuan’s younger brother but they weren’t blood-related. He was the son of Song Qiliang and his ex-wife. He had just turned 19 years old this year and managed to get into university. Song Ci was different from Song Qinghuan. He was ambitious and had good morals.
“But I don’t have money too. How am I supposed to give you any?” Song Qinghuan lowered her eyelids. She knew how to act pitiful too.
Song Qiliang sniggered. “You don’t have money but your brother is wealthy. Isn’t he the manager of a big company? Meiyan is his biological mother. Our family is so poor now so I think he’ll help us.”
He and Lu Meiyan didn’t know that Yan Pingdan disappeared with a huge sum of money. Song Qinghuan wouldn’t voluntarily tell them either.
