Death Can’t Sleep - Chapter 88
Chapter 88

Amarion smiled quietly. He came over and looked at the book she was reading. He nodded.
“Finally, the last one.”
“Yes.”
“Keep reading. I have documents to look at.”
He shook the thin file folder he was carrying.
She nodded and looked down at the book again.
[“I didn’t kill the Lady’s father.”
Flamberge stared intently at the knight.
“Then why did you come back?”
“I wanted to know why you gave such an order. Your father said he didn’t imprison the Lady. If its true, then why did you ask me to kill him?”
“I coveted the position of the Grand Duke.”
“That is a lie.”
Flamberge put down her teacup. It was definitely tea made with Gorgon poison.
“How does the knight know that?”
“The Lady can kill her father whenever she wants. The Grand Duke said that Lady was a powerful wizard, and I think so too. It must be magic that causes this tower to have thorny vines all year round.”
Flamberge frowned. It was hard to believe that the stupid knight had noticed that.
Dordophin asked next.
“The guards you said you killed were actually just drunk. So I don’t believe the rumors that the Lady is cruel. Please tell me. What is the crime of the Grand Duke?”
At that, Flamberge burst out laughing.]
Amarion opened her eyes wide when she saw the illustration on the next page.
In a painting as bright and beautiful as a flower, the delicate Flamberge was laughing and crying.
[“Ah, Dordophin. My kind and stupid Dordophin. What on earth would he be guilty of? The man who can’t even meet his only daughter.”
Flamberge stood up from her seat. Everywhere she walked, terrible thorns grew and climbed the wall. Flamberge whispered.
“I’m a terrible witch. Look at this. Thorn bushes grow wherever I walk. I’ve been up here trying to suppress this magic because I’m afraid I’ll hurt someone.”
Flamberge smiled broadly.
“But I can’t do it anymore.”
Tears were dripping down from her eyes.
“I’m sick of drinking Gorgon’s poison to suppress my magic, or cutting the vines with a dragon’s sword. So I made that request. If you are a knight, you will be happy to judge this witch who violated chivalry.”
Dordophin was at a loss for words. The tears of his beloved Lady took his breath away. He swam through a forest of thorns and lava just to make Flamberge laugh. But his beloved woman was now asking him…
“Please, kill me, Dordophin.”
He couldn’t.]
Her eyes clouded over. Amarion didn’t know exactly why, but she was incredibly immersed in this book.
Victor pretended not to notice her whimpering.
She turned the page again.
[Dordophin was Princess Leypier’s knight. He was the greatest swordsman in the kingdom, and he saved countless lives. He was a friend to all and a protector of mankind.
He knew what to do. He had to cut down the witch who made the thorn forest and burn her body. She had to be ended before she killed herself and her evil curse spread.
But Dordophin was human. He was just human.
“My Lady, have you been out lately? Strawberries are in season these days. Every mountain is full of strawberries, so even dragons wander around the forest, smacking their lips. The market sells pies full of strawberry jam.”
“It’s meaningless to me.”
“Why is it meaningless?”
Dordophin asked. His voice was sad.
“You like strawberry pie. I will buy it. So let’s go together. I’ll cut all the vines, and I’ll make Gorgon tea every morning.”
Dordophin wept and held out his hand.
“Get out of here with me.”
Flamberge bowed her head and sobbed. Flowers began to bloom on the thorny vines.]
Amarion held her breath and turned to the last page.
[Dordophin and Flamberge held hands and descended the tower. The thorny bushes opened a path for them, and the guards cheered them on. Dordophin escorted Flamberge into his carriage. Sunlight poured over the two of them.
Now, Dordophin would go to Princess Leypier. To report on his adventures, and to let her know that he had found a lady whom he wanted to marry. He had no doubt that his Lady would bless them.
What else? He was the wandering knight Dordophin. He was a man who laughed even if he fell into a poop while fighting a frog. Now with the woman he loves, he will laugh for the rest of his life. Even if life comes upon him like thorns.
-The story of the Wandering Knight Dordophin, End-]
Amarion closed the book.
She put the book down on the table and lay down. Victor hugged her. His fingers carefully stroked her tear-stained cheeks.
She asked Victor.
“Why did you like this story?”
“Isn’t it fun?”
“It was fun. But… I wonder why you liked this book so much.”
Victor’s hands gently ran through her hair.
“I always wanted someone to save me.”
Amarion looked up at Victor. It reminded her of his childhood.
Victor said he was lonely. He had no family in this spacious castle, so every day here was sad and painful. Before his brother came back, he was always alone.
“Was Mortheon your Dordophin?”
Victor laughed softly.
“You are my Dordophin.”
She suddenly choked up. The emotions she felt throughout the day came back tenfold. She barely muttered a single word.
“…Me?”
“Yes, you.”
Victor laughed.
“You could have killed me, but you brought me back to life. Allowing me to do things I haven’t been able to do, making me feel emotions I’ve never felt before. You gave me the life I had been dreaming of since I was little.”
“…”
“You took me out of the tower.”
‘Walking Death’ smiled brightly.
Amarion stared at Victor with emotions she couldn’t describe. Her rising guilt made it hard to breathe.
‘How will he feel when he finds out that I am gone? I’ll be a terrible wife who left him even after hearing all these stories.’
The road was risky and it would be a long journey, so she had hidden a letter in which she promised to return as quickly as possible, but he may not even want to read it. Disappointed and resentful, she didn’t know if he would want to see her any longer.
Negative feelings formed in her stomach again. The warmer his arms grew, the greater her anguish became.
She didn’t have the confidence to tell him now.
She curled up as small as she could and whispered.
“Victor.”
“Yes?”
“Sorry.”
Victor paused and asked quietly.
“What do you mean?”
“Just… for everything.”
He didn’t ask anything more. Instead, he hugged her tighter.
“It’s okay, Marion. Everything is fine…”
She buried her face in his arms, hoping his sleeves didn’t get wet.
* * *
The night passed in a flash.
Amarion stroked the sleeping Victor’s face and quietly got out of bed before sunrise.
When she went into the hostess’ room, the luggage that Diederick had prepared lay out neatly. Just like when she left for subjugation, she wore leather armor and a robe. It had been days since she had worn armor, so she felt awkward. She checked her luggage one last time, hung her sword around her waist, and left the room with her hood pulled up.
There was no one in the hallway. The servants, who were finally given vacation after the banquet, slept in. She silenced the sound of her footsteps and went down the stairs. The back door of the castle was dimly lit.
As she got closer, Diederick, who was holding a lamp, bowed.
“Madame.”
“Thanks for your help, Diederick.”
It must have been a difficult request.
But the butler did not answer. Instead, he quietly opened the door.
And she saw…
“…Victor?!”
It was her husband, the Grand Duke of Morte.
She was so startled that her whole body froze. She couldn’t understand the situation at all. He was obviously sleeping in bed, so she didn’t understand why he was here or how he knew she was leaving. Carlz promised that he would definitely hide it from Victor.
Amarion turned to Diederick in shock.
“Diederick, how could you…?”
“I’m sorry, Madame. But I thought it was something the two of you should discuss.”
“Diederick is right.”
Amarion looked back at Victor in dismay.
Her husband, who caught her in the middle of her night escape, surprisingly didn’t look too upset. He even wore a cloak as thick as hers and had his sword tied around his waist. It was a traveler’s look.
She was even more confused.
“Victor, what is this?”
“I heard from Diederick yesterday.”
Victor said quietly.
“He told me you were leaving, and you planned to depart this morning… And actually, I had a vague idea. The movements of the monsters were unusual. If we were to find the cause, it must have been the North.”
Her heart sank. So Victor was already aware of the situation. Her heart throbbed more. How disappointed he must be with her, who was leaving without saying a word.
But Victor smiled softly.
“So I decided to let you go.”
