Chapter 16: Obvious Results

Cao Yan went to the busiest area of Magic Metropolis in the morning.
Buildings towered on both sides of the streets, with many shops selling demon beasts and gears.
These shops targeted mainly fields that required supernatural powers, something like the high-end luxury brands on Earth.
As Cao Yan walked, he looked around the shops. His aim was to familiarize himself with the way this world worked. It was also to complete the mission that would make him a retarded pervert if he failed.
Cao Yan had five days to complete that mission. There were no specific requirements, but after thinking for a while, he was already quite confident in completing the mission. It was the second day since the mission started, so he still had sufficient time. Cao Yan went into each shop leisurely.
After leaving a magic product store, Cao Yan walked into the demon pet shop next door.
There were many species of demon beasts in this shop. Just the hound category could be divided into different breeds, like the tracking hounds with a sensitive, large snout and long legs, guard dogs such as mastiffs, as well as hunting dogs that worked well in packs to hunt.
After strolling around the shop, Cao Yan felt as though his horizons had been expanded. While leaving, the thoughts in his mind solidified. Money is difficult to earn indeed. It’s tough everywhere. The transmigration trope in dramas and novels about the main character being a fish in the water with their knowledge of Earth is all a lie. The business model here has already become a system on its own. It would be tough to apply the operations on Earth here.
In his previous conversation with Old Wu, Cao Yan knew that the original host was quite adept in fishing, had some spatial talent, and was working as an apprentice in a shop making trainer gears.
The original host was maintaining a livelihood through fishing while learning spatial creation. Although he belonged to the lowest tier in this world, he still had his ambition to become a master in demon pet products one day.
In the afternoon, Cao Yan once again visited a shop.
This was a relatively well-known shop dealing in trainer gears, and it was also where the original host worked as an apprentice.
“Where have you gone off to these few days? The boss isn’t pleased. You better watch out.”
A thin young boy came over the moment Cao Yan stepped foot into the shop.
The young boy was named Roger, an apprentice.
Cao Yan nodded at him. “It’s alright. I came to resign anyway. I’m not working here anymore.”
Roger was taken aback. “I remember you telling me that this apprenticeship was a rare chance and you were ready to give it your all. Why are you resigning all of a sudden? Are you going somewhere better?”
Cao Yan gave him a perfunctory reply and walked to the back of the shop to tell the boss the purpose of his arrival.
Even though the original host had some spatial talent, he was not that gifted. It would work if he just wanted to be an apprentice, but advancing further would be stretching it. With the amount of talent he had, no one would find it a shame and urge him to stay. When the middle-aged boss heard that he wanted to leave, he only felt a little pity and said, “If you’ve thought things through, I won’t make you stay. However, once you leave, don’t ever think of coming back. Have you made up your mind?”
By the time Cao Yan resigned from his apprenticeship and left the shop, the sky was getting dark.
Before he left the city and returned to his boat, he recalled that he could borrow books from the Pet Trainer Association for free. Thus, he headed to the association and borrowed two books from the library.
When he finally got to the harbor, it was already dark. It felt as though a day had passed really quickly.
“Cao Yan, you haven’t gone out to sea for the past two days and kept going into the city. What are you up to?” He could hear Old Wu yell at him from afar.
His granddaughter, Wu Xiao Xi, leaned lazily against the boat’s cabin, looking at him with her bright eyes.
Cao Yan: “I had some things to settle in the city these couple of days, so I’ve been going in more often.”
Old Wu was stuffing his face with a freshly-grilled fish as he said, “Xiao Xi just grilled some fish. Do you want some?”
Cao Yan went to his boat to put his books down before going over to Old Wu to freeload. Wu Xiao Xi knew him very well. She went over and passed him a grilled fish slathered with some home-made sauce with a grin.
“Xiao Xi, you’re good enough to be a chef in a restaurant in the city,” Cao Yan praised the little girl. When she heard his words, she chuckled, making her small chest rise and fall slightly.
Cao Yan finished his fish and chatted with Old Wu for a while before leaving to read his books.
“I think your net caught something. Old Grandpa, go take a look quickly,” Cao Yan said as he pointed at the net hanging over the deck.
Fishermen would usually hang a net over the boat at the surface of the water, whether they were out at sea or not, because they might accidentally pick up some stupid fishes and prawns.
With Cao Yan’s reminder, Old Wu jumped to his feet to pull up the net, thinking that a blind fish came swimming into it. He did not expect to see a glimmer of golden flash when he flipped the net open. A golden-scaled fish about half a person long was lying there.
“Heh, what kind of luck is this? All I did was put an empty net in the water and a Dragon Carp, a gold one at that, actually came swimming in. HAHAHAHAHAHA.” Old Wu started laughing non-stop, revealing his yellowed teeth.
A Dragon Carp was not cheap at all, and a golden one was even rarer. Legend had it that a golden Dragon Carp could evolve into a dragon. No one knew how true that was, but one would definitely make a windfall from selling it.
Cao Yan was also smiling along. It was not nice for him to leave after eating, especially since he kept eating off them.
The Dragon Carp only swam into the net on its own because he had secretly used the spiritual bridge technique to draw it in.
Cao Yan was adamant about being anonymous when doing good deeds. While Old Wu and his granddaughter were surprised and puzzled at the incident, he sneaked back into his boat.
The two books he borrowed from the association’s library were “Complete Explanation on Supernatural Occupations” and “Types of Languages in the World”.
He wanted to borrow “On Demon Beasts”, “Thoughts on Totem demons”, and more books.
However, as a stage one trainer, he was only entitled to two books at a time.
Ever since becoming a trainer, Cao Yan’s eyesight had improved. The dim lighting in the cabin was not at all a hindrance to his reading.
After he took the spiritual potion from the spaceship, Cao Yan did not feel anything unusual. However, at this moment when he was reading, he felt the real effects of it.
The “Types of Languages in the World” was a book about languages. Cao Yan was almost at the stage where he could memorize the content after going through it once.
It was quiet in the cabin, the only sound being the waves slapping the shore.
After several hours, Cao Yan stretched his stiff neck and realized that it was already late at night.
It had only been a few hours, but he felt as though he could already grasp a unique language of a certain race in the Green Jungle.
I almost learned a foreign language in one night. This feels… awesome. Cao Yan thought to himself.
The long night passed, and the sun rose from the horizon.
When Cao Yan went to the deck to wash up early in the morning, he could see someone walking towards the harbor from afar. It was the plump lady, Xiafu.
A thought flashed past Cao Yan’s mind. Looks like it wouldn’t be long before I complete the mission.
