Chapter 40: A Mage Looking For A Demon Pet
“Why not? I’ll add more money, alright?”
The grandiose man didn’t believe that money could not solve the problem since this was a business after all.
There’s no point in adding more money if the fake system doesn’t agree… Cao Yan would, of course, not think out loud. Hence, he rejected the man once again.
The man thought for a while and said, “I was unable to tell that the demon pets in your shop are so precious. If my attitude offended you, I’d apologize to you. Alright?”
“There’s no need for an apology, but I really can’t.” Cao Yan put it out to him straightforwardly.
The man’s expression changed, and he said in a solemn tone, “I am part of the Phoenix Adventure Team. If you sell these demon beasts to me, our team would owe you a great favor. If you’re unwilling to sell them… think about the consequences.”
This was a carrot and stick strategy. The intention was clear: If Cao Yun was unwilling to give in, he would beat the hell out of him.
However, Cao Yan pointed to the Pet Trainer Association badge on his chest calmly. He meant: Do you think your Phoenix Adventure Team is better than the Pet Trainer Association?
The man’s face changed at once. His attitude also followed suit, and he started to speak in a gentle and reasonable tone, “Bro, you’re the owner of this shop, right? Let’s talk this over. Sell your demon beasts to me. I’ll not bargain with you. You’ll earn your money, and I’ll also be grateful to you. Isn’t that great?”
He continued, “The team leader of our Phoenix Adventure Team, Feng Qiwu, will also owe you a favor. You should know the team leader, right? She is also a beautiful woman, comparable…”
The man glanced at Wang Li. “Comparable to the beauty in your shop. If you’re willing to sell the demon beasts to me, I’ll get our leader to come over to personally thank you. I’m her brother, and she listens to me. You get my drift, right?”
This man even shamelessly tried to use her sister’s sex appeal.
“Let me be honest with you too; it’s not about the money,” said Cao Yan.
The man immediately agreed, “Yes, yes, yes, it’s not about the money.” At the same time, he thought to himself: So it’s about the woman. This fellow is giving in.
“All I can say is, you’re only allowed to buy one demon beast from my shop. If you’re not buying it, leave. If you’re buying, pay up,” said Cao Yan.
“?” The man blinked. He had never seen a business owner who would not budge no matter which tactic he used. In the end, he gave in unwillingly. “Since I can only buy one, your demon beasts will sure differ in terms of quality.
“I want something good. Do you have any recommendations?”
Cao Yan’s batch of demon beasts had their genes extracted by the spaceship. Those that had their potential increased by a stage would not be able to fight beyond their level. Those that remained in their original stage would be refined in other ways, like their agility, strength, or even attributes. The improvement in these areas would allow the demon beasts to jump ranks.
But he only had 12 demon beasts. Eliminating the demon beasts with increased potential and those that were not combative, there were only three to four demon beasts left that could fight beyond their current stage.
When Cao Yan pointed out those few demon beasts, the man heaved a sigh of relief.
If all the demon beasts had the ability to jump ranks, he would genuinely be in disbelief. If good quality demon beasts were so common, they would not be rare anymore.
The grandiose man finally settled on the Thundersaur. After paying, he left hurriedly with the new demon pet.
“Where is he rushing off to?” The little sparrow watched the man bewilderedly.
“He could only buy one, so he is running back to get the people he knows to buy more of them.” Wang Li hit the nail on the head.
The man was indeed hurrying back to call the others from his team to buy the other demon beasts. He had to get all the demon beasts that could jump stages for the Phoenix Adventure Team.
“Congratulations for selling your demon beast. Mission completion 1/5.” The fake system’s notification rang in Cao Yan’s consciousness.
At the moment, in the shop, other than the staff, there was a middle-aged man who had arrived earlier than the grandiose man.
He didn’t intend to get anything and was only there to look at the beautiful shop assistant. However, after seeing the grandiose man’s reaction, he considered getting a demon beast too. After all, it was not easy to come across such exceptional demon beasts.
“Boss, can this stage-one demon beast really fight a stage-two beast? Can the price… be lower?” asked the middle-aged man.
He was not like the grandiose man, the rich fool, who was buying demon beasts for his team. He was just a poor pervert, so he wanted to bargain.
“You’re not a demon pet trainer, neither are you in any related fields. There’s a high chance for you to be attacked by the demon beast while rearing it. That is very dangerous. I think you’d better reconsider buying a demon beast,” Cao Yan said as he sized up the middle-aged man.
“No, my daughter’s in the Magic Metropolis Academy, studying to be a pet trainer. She is currently a trainer apprentice. I wanted to buy her a good demon beast,” the man explained.
The little sparrow scoffed at him.
You already have a daughter, but you’re still here in our shop, ogling at the vixen. What an old pervert.
The middle-aged man also noticed the little sparrow’s action and grew embarrassed. He hesitated for a while before leaving. The guy did not have the cheek to continue bargaining.
It was noon, and the sun was hanging high in the sky.
A young lady entered the shop. Her eyes were filled with life, and she was wearing a red mage’s robe. Behaved proudly like a peacock, she was pulling a face on purpose to appear older.
This was the first mage Cao Yan ever saw. He had heard that people in the mage professions were all filthy rich.
After seeing Wang Li, the young lady was stunned for a while. She could not hide the shock in her eyes either. She subconsciously toned down her ego and said in a crisp voice, “Who is the owner of this shop?”
“I am. How can I help you?” Cao Yan replied calmly.
“I am a mage.” The young lady lifted her chest almost consciously to show her mage badge. It seemed she was proud of her profession. “I want to find a demon beast as a companion. Here are my requirements. First, it has to be a wild demon beast with strong combat prowess. Second, it must have a high potential to grow. Third, it must be good enough for my status; that is, it must be good-looking. Do you have any recommendations?”
Mages would buy demon beasts so that they could bring them along as a little assistant. Also, they were bad at close combat. With a demon beast to compensate for this weakness, mages would be able to better protect themselves.
“You want a demon beast that has high potential and has to be good-looking too…” Cao Yan thought for a while and said, “How about a stage-four potential demon beast?”
“What elite demon beasts do you have here?” The young lady’s eyes lit up.
“Cave salamander,” said Cao Yan.
The cave salamander was a famous stage-four demon beast, and it was also distantly related to dragons. The young lady had no reason to be dissatisfied with it. She put on a nonchalant look and said, “Let me take a look at it.”
