Doctor Resignation - Chapter 25
“Ah, it’s really crazy.”
I threw the pen and hugged my head in the lab. Even though I had been sticking with Erhan at the request of the Duchess, I couldn’t figure out the cause of his chronic disease.
Of course, he’s always taking his fencing lessons, and since he’s been eating well in many ways, he’s much better than before. But his intermittent seizures and dizziness were still unknown.
Well, the cause of this unknown disease was not even discovered by Viscount Perelman.
His immune system has also improved, so there wasn’t a situation where he went back and forth like in the old days, but my heart was still impatient.
“I have to save him somehow.”
When Erhan was taking his swordsmanship classes or learning things from his tutor, she would be stuck inside her lab. Baron Ishid and Frederick came often, but no movement was seen.
‘They’re persistent people who worked breathlessly until he reached adulthood in my past life.’
I used to grit my teeth whenever Frederick came to Erhan and get annoyed by myself.
‘They probably won’t wait for years before they come up with a new scheme. It’s not normal.’
Sometimes at tea time, the tone of the Duchess who talked about the Baron would become a little strange.
The Duchess used to say nuances like, ‘Roman has neither the intelligence nor the audacity to devise a grand scheme for himself.’
I wondered if she didn’t know her younger brother that much, but I also wondered if a cold-hearted person like the Duchess would have such an eye for people.
‘Or maybe there’s a bigger person behind it?’
But that wasn’t something I could know. For now, all my focus was on how to keep the Casseus Dukedom out of trouble.
What I had to do, was keep was my position as an assistant.
Now that I realized how comfortable and useful Viscount Perelman’s assistant seats are for them, I shouldn’t ever let down my alertness.
In the meantime, days went by diligently.
Occasionally, a couple of people visited me saying that they had lost a 13-year-old girl with brown hair and green eyes. However, even before the complicated and lengthy paternity test could end, a “mismatch” result will always appear in the early hair tests.
Well, I didn’t think I could find my parents easily.
But every time new people came and it turned out that it was a mismatch, the Duchess called me and had dinner with me. Erhan was also there and emptied the plate without the need for me to call him out.
I could see that he was being considerate so that I wouldn’t nag anymore.
‘Good boy, you’re all grown up.’
I didn’t have much expectation anyway, but the Duchess used to say every time.
“Stay with the Duchy for a long time. This is also your home.”
Well, that wasn’t bad either.
I don’t forget that I was a commoner, but here, I wear high-quality clothes worn by aristocrats and eat meals prepared by others.
I saved the life of the Duchess, and I thought it was natural to be treated by her like this.
It was never shameless.
“How about signing a formal contract as our primary care physician as soon as you reach adulthood?”
For the sake of one’s own safety, there was no better job than here.
“…I’ll think about it.”
Once I saved Erhan, I could start to think of my own safety. If I can’t cure his chronic disease… the consequences would be terrible.
After dinner, I went into the room with Erhan, and Diel was waiting for me in the hallway. Erhan clasped my hand with a frown.
“Diel? What’s going on?”
Avoiding Erhan’s eyes, Diel said.
“Viscount Perelman is here.”
“Oh, right.”
Come to think of it, I think Viscount Perelman said today is the day of his return.
“Of course, I should say hello, right?”
“Oh, he told me he had a lot to throw away.”
“Things to throw away?”
“Well, you know…”
I shrugged my shoulders. Then stroked Erhan’s hair once and said,
“I think I should go to the Viscount. Master Erhan, can you have the night study session alone?”
Meanwhile, after dinner, we used to study together in his room. I read medical books, and Erhan did his homework given by his tutors.
The tutors used to make a fuss admiring Erhan’s ability to learn.
Since I had never received an aristocratic education, I couldn’t judge objectively, and Erhan wasn’t particularly proud and often said, ‘All younger people than me already know all of this.’
“You have to come when I go to sleep,” Erhan answered sulkily.
“I can’t sleep without you.”
“I’ve told you many times. It’s just your imagination. You can sleep well alone.”
I would still hold his hand every night until he fell asleep. When I looked at Erhan, who was asleep holding my hand tightly, I often thought he was cute, just like raising a younger brother.
“Still, you should come.”
So, I felt like these mood swings he had, were just like a baby asking for affection.
“Well, it’s not difficult.”
After I nodded, Erhan looked at Diel once more and went into his room.
“Excuse me…” Diel said with a sigh.
“You don’t think Master Erhan hates me, do you?”
“Uh.”
It was a reasonable inference considering his gaze that was pointing at Diel just now. Still, he seemed to be quite bothered by how scary the little boy was.
“Why?”
“I think he finds me ugly. Just looking at me, like I’m unpleasant.”
“Objectively, I don’t think that’s it, kids sometimes see things differently.”
“You’re not a kid?”
“Aren’t I a little smart for a kid?”
“But you’re still thirteen…”
“Nonsense. Let’s go to the Viscount.”
“…All right. I don’t think you are a kid.”
Diel immediately shut up and guided me to the Viscount’s room.
There wasn’t much I liked about the enormous burdens that Viscount Perelman brought. In particular, there were so many clothes that it was difficult to deal with.
Irvia was a hot southern region all year round, so there were only a lot of summer clothes.
If I were an ordinary noble Young Lady, I would have gone to teatimes and salons all over the place so that I would need fancy clothes, but I was just a commoner.
Strictly speaking, I was an assistant hired by the Duchess and by Viscount Perelman. It meant that pretty clothes and accessories should be worn only inside the Dukedom. And even if I did go out of the Duchy, it was not like I had a place to go to anyway.
When he saw my sour face, Viscount Perelman looked a little disappointed, but he didn’t make it obvious.
“Huh?”
But there was one thing that turned it all over.
“This… It’s the first time I’ve ever seen this type of herb.” I breathed slowly with sparkling eyes.
It was a unique herb that I had never seen before, and even with a quick look, it seemed to have a tremendous effect.
“It’s also my first time seeing this kind of herb, that’s why I bought it. They call it ‘Little Grass.’ The name is weird because it’s from the South.”
Viscount Perelman finally lifted his head with pride.
“The climate in the region is unique, so there certainly are many rare herbs.”
“I heard it’s hot all the time there.”
“If it had been like usual, I would not have been interested in the medicinal herbs from the land where the efficacy has not yet been revealed and….”
“Wasn’t it interesting?”
“I, I knew… you’ll like to… research it…”
“Oh.”
“Well, it was not just for that reason.”
Behind Viscount Perelman, Diel slowly closed his eyes and nodded, as if just letting it pass by.
I shrugged and answered.
“Yes, I’ll keep in mind that my research has given you interest in rare herbs that you weren’t particularly interested in.”
“Yes. Keep that in mind.” Viscount Perelman said with arms folded.
“Because I had to buy a very expensive special container to keep the grass fresh.”
Feeling guilty about those words, I confessed.
“The study of paternity tests… I couldn’t proceed further. I’ve been taking care of Master Erhan all day long.”
“It’s alright. Your priority is indeed Master Erhan.”
“No matter how hard I try, I can’t find the cause of his chronic disease…”
“It’s going to be difficult. I’ve been looking at it too, but I still have no idea.” He said, shaking his head.
I sighed and murmured with anger.
“We have raised his immune system a lot with regular sleep and proper eating habits, but I’m afraid he’s… Addicted to some sort of poison.”
“I’ve also thought about it, but once he’s addicted, it’s meaningless if we don’t know the solution.”
Diel, who was listening quietly from behind, stepped in.
“Well… I know you’re not on good terms with them, but why don’t you ask the imperial medical staff?”
We replied at the same time to the ridiculous remark with a pathetic expression.
“Do you think the imperial medical team knows what we don’t know?”
“If we can’t figure it out, how can the imperial medical team know it?”
Diel looked a little bored.
