Doctor Resignation - Chapter 47
I was nineteen before I went back in time.
Shortly after opening the parliament of the Casseus Dukedom, Frederick finally had full authority within the manor.
Flashing back in the past, I was suddenly called by someone, probably a stranger. It could be that the person was of higher status.
He was a tall young man with red hair and his face was sprinkled with scattered freckles.
“Aren’t you perhaps the famous doctor in town recently.”
“I suppose that is me, sir.”
“Then you need to e with me.”
It was so sudden to be dragged by a stranger. I replied to him as a sign of bewilderment of the immediate shock.
“May I ask why?”
“You have been called in as a medical officer in our army troops, miss.”
“Pardon me, if I misheard you.”
The young man ordered me sternly thus, I put my hand on my waist as I argued, feeling dissatisfied.
“Then? What about the clinic that I’m managing right now? I am not obliged to serve in the military against my own will, sir.”
“You should be. Casseus Duchy is now under Lord Frederick’s authority……”
“Then send a formal request.”
“Stop giving me a hard time. You’ll be disciplined if you’re acting too proudly as I am to lead you now.”
“What do you mean about leading me? You just burst out of nowhere and asked me to go with you? Perhaps, are you sure you aren’t truly joking right now—”
I couldn’t finish my sentences as the red-haired man pulled out his sword and clung it near my neck. The sword shone brilliantly, a sign that it was sharp enough to cut me àin half.
“Don’t talk back if you treasure your life, miss.”
Therefore, I was accused as a rebel even if I was being forced by my ‘superior’.
It wasn’t until very later that I found out that the man’s name was Aaron Krillso. He was only a year older than me, though he did not have much influence in society.
As he was born into a fallen noble family, he joined the rebellion troops and sought a place in a higher status.
He was quite close to Frederick at that time since he was in the position of ‘correlation’ that was being used to make everything run smoothly.
“We’re short of supplies, sir.”
When they arrived at the rebellion base, most of the injured people were residents of the Casseus estate. From the people I knew at the nursery to the ordinary doctor, they were just like me.
I didn’t even have a proper meal, but I started to do my best with a sense of duty as a doctor.
“We don’t have enough doctors. If you are not a doctor, at least be an assistant.”
The injured people that crowded every day in the base were too much even if I was capable enough to save them.
But Aaron always ignored everything I said.
“You’re a genius doctor, aren’t you? Just take care of it.”
“I still can’t sleep three hours a day.”
Around that time, I was in charge of the classification of herbs and cleaning alone, so my hands were full.
I didn’t own any manpower to hold on, but I couldn’t help it as hygiene was the most basic yet important thing if we were to treat a gruesome number of patients.
“Then cut your sleeping schedule down to two hours.”
“I refuse, I have to treat everyone here. At least, give me some med necessities to sort out the herbs I collected—”
“I’m the one who put you here, so behave.”
Aaron lit his cigarette and went away.
One day, he threw more annoying tasks.
“Lord Frederick’s fiancée is looking for beauty products. Though it was not quite known, I heard you’re a little famous in that field.”
“Famous? The aristocrats came secretly to me, that is why I made some for them.”
“Anyway, we want it by this afternoon, make it a week’s worth.”
It was a ridiculous request when the situation inside the medical base was desperate as we do not have enough hands to handle everything.
“I don’t even have any herbs for my patients right now.”
“You sure know what’s important, no? His grace’s fiancée was in a good mood after hearing about your beauty products. She might give you some money or even rewards if you pleased her.”
I had to sleep less and make the beauty reagents despite having a person who is approaching death beside me.
I couldn’t even utter how terrible that feeling was.
However, I thought that I could buy more bandages if the budget increased, so I obediently gave them a week’s worth of beauty products.
But what I heard from Frederick’s fiancée was a brazen answer, ‘Please take care of me for the next week.’
Of course, there was no such thing as additional money for the medical base.
“She’s the mistress of the Duke. Shouldn’t you be proud of your achievement?”
“Does that make any sense?”
As I trembled in anger, Aaron glanced down as he stared at me.
“But your medical base right now has the highest cure rate.”
“They are not pletely cured. The patients need to rest. Why are you being such a fool by sending them straight to the battlefield again?”
If it weren’t for the patients, I would have quit and left at the risk of death.
But there were too many people who would die without me.
“Fool? Crown Prince Jade is going berserk right now. Seeing that, how can we afford to wait until they’re all cured?”
Of course, Aaron didn’t even listen to me.
“You’re doing great right now, so just make it still. If you are stubborn, I’ll inform Duke Frederick.”
I foolishly believed his word and kept on waiting.
I followed Duke Frederick because I understood it as an improvement in the environment of the Duchy.
But what I was thinking about a few days later was the report in the name of Frederick.
It was a report stating that I was leading the other medical team with all the treatments involving the rebellion armies. It was said that I was their benefactor.
‘Oh, lord…….’
I cut the useless report into eight pieces and used the rest to pack herbs.
At that time, there were not enough supplies to classify herbs in the medic base.
However, the record still remained in the manor. When Crown Prince Jade eventually occupied the Duchy, the name Lise Estelle was carved officially inside an official army report.
Without that report, I might not have been sentenced to death.
‘My life really didn’t help me at all.’
That is why I couldn’t have forgotten Aaron Krillso.
***
“Greetings.”
The next day, Aaron stood in front of me and greeted me politely.
“My name is Aaron Krillso, your new assistant.”
His red hair and those freckles, sprinkled around his nose reminded me of the old days.
“Please take good care of me, miss.”
“Sure.”
I cracked a smile though not full of sincerity, creating a gentle atmosphere as I talked proudly. “Young sir, you might have a lot of work to do. Will you not disappoint me?”
“Sure, if you let me.”
From my point of view, he must have been desperate to stay within the Casseus Duchy. He isn’t in a position to care about what is sweet and bitter.
“It’s not official employment yet, but I decide whether you’re good at your job or not.”
I could feel Diel’s gaze, slightly trembling behind me at my arrogant way of speaking.
I handed over a small canvas bag containing 50 Vercalian seeds that I have gotten from Diel.
“Make sure you bloom all of these 50 Vercalians. I will give you ten days for the deadline.”
“……pardon?”
“Oh, the greenhouse is a little unpleasant. You know that Vercalian flowers bloom well when the surrounding environment is clean, right? You’ll have to clean it up first.”
Aaron looked puzzled and took the Vercalian seeds from my hand.
“But Miss……”
“If you can’t do it, you are free to go.”
Vercalian was a difficult plant.
Not only do you have to water and fertilize every two hours, but as soon as the leaves turn yellow, you have to remove them immediately.
If the surrounding environment is sterilized, then the plants can form buds.
In short, it meant that he had to be confined in the greenhouse and not sleep well. He will have to keep looking after or stare upon the plant for hours.
Even though the plant was quite difficult to grow, it was not particularly an effective herb nor was it a pleasant-looking plant. That is why Vercalian flowers have little value in the market.
It was not worth any effort being poured towards growing the plant.
“No,” Aaron replied with a stiff look. “I will try.”
“For your information, if you cannot grow 50 Vercalian by 10 days, I’ll increase the number by 10,” I said with a relaxed smile.
Aaron sighed slightly and muttered, “But if I were to bloom all these flowers alone, I will have to eat and sleep in the greenhouse…….”
“I will set up a portable shower room and a bed for you. You can have a meal there, too.”
Aaron stared at me with his trembling eyes as if he was looking at a devil. That made me feel a lot better.
“Is there a problem?”
“……I wouldn’t even have three hours a day……”
“I can sleep for two hours a day.” I glanced at Aaron. “Do you happen to know anyone at the Casseus manor?”
“There’s no one.”
“I see.”
I grinned. “If you grow all the flowers, you’ll be hired officially as my assistant, and you’ll enjoy a lot of authority and freedom. Just hang in there until you can prove your worth.”
I added.
“Not only that, but I promise you a tremendous reward.”
