Chapter 19: The Last Preparations Before Entering the Bunker

Chen Xin did not know about the USA missile defense system that the Americans were so proud of. All he knew was the impending doom of the meteorites.
The female reporter that was acting optimistic on TV just now was now forcing herself to act calm. She looked serious and slightly terrified.
The twenty nuclear bombs were initially prepared for that four-kilometer-radius meteorite. It was excessive but it was sufficient to destroy it.
Now the Russians had a change in plans. Their mission was to change their route towards the three torn meteorites which were falling at high speed towards Earth. The difficulty level of their mission became significantly higher.
Chen Xin was not a pro at astronomy but he knew the Russians had a low chance at stopping all three meteorites at once.
They could probably stop one or two but it was too difficult to successfully aim at all three.
In the previous live broadcasts, the reporter purposefully repeated that the nuclear bombs were navigated at the initial meteorite with precision and calculation. They repeated that to boost the confidence of the citizens.
The Russians only had to aim and fire the bombs.
Plus there was only one target, so they could easily fire away.
They could hit two targets as long as they were not in the front and back of each other.
However, they were now facing three targets doing the Brownian motion. They were moving in random directions towards Earth!
If one of the meteorites ended up in front of the other two, all the twenty bombs would fire at the same time, leaving the two meteorites in perfect condition!
In conclusion, hitting two meteorites was the best possible outcome!
As for the meteorite heading towards North America, Chen Xin had little hopes for that. It was out of the question.
The missile interception system that the Americans were so proud of was actually a defense system. It was designed to intercept missiles launched by other countries.
A missile should not be in compared with a meteorite. It was easier to aim, but it was not powerful enough. Intercepting a missile required one or two missiles, but to stop a meteorite? They need everything they got. It was way more difficult.
They were also using normal missiles, the Americans were unsure whether they could stop the meteorite in time without more firepower. The United States had no choice but to use multiple missiles.
There was another problem, the destroyed meteorite debris would also potentially be contaminated with radiation, meaning it could spread all over the ozone layer!
Only North America would be contaminated if they were lucky. If they were not, the whole world would become an irradiated wasteland.
Chen Xin thought of the worst-case scenario for humanity.
He packed his TV with his sleeping bag, then tied it securely with ropes. Chen Xin took one last look at his home, said his goodbyes, then headed straight toward his underground bunker.
There was no chance he would return to his home. Even if he did, he would not be living here anymore.
These thoughts upset Chen Xin, he was sentimental for a few minutes before he held onto his TV and sleeping bag. He locked the door and left his house.
The bunker would be his new home.
His phone was still broadcasting live on his way to the bunker. The Russians already opened fire. The meteorites were covered and nowhere to be seen.
Chen Xin stopped dead in his tracks.
Maybe, just maybe, the nuclear bombs could stop the meteorites.
He did not need to move into his bunker if the meteorites were destroyed, right?
Chen Xin prayed to the Gods and spirits that watched over humanity. He prayed for some luck at the last chance to save the world.
The fate of the world depended on the twenty nuclear bombs.
It was ironic that the weapon meant for destruction was their last hope of survival.
Everyone prayed and hoped that the nuclear bombs would blow the meteorites into bits.
The first nuclear bomb hit a meteorite, it shined brightly like a bright spark in the universe.
Chen Xin looked up and saw the light in the sky caused by that nuclear bomb.
More sparks followed, his phone screen was shining a bright white light. It was like the biggest fireworks display in the sky, caused by the greatest weapon ever invented by humans.
It shined like a foreign sun.
“Is it gone?” Chen Xin stared at the sky. He did not care about the dazzling light hurting his eyes, he needed to know what was the result.
