Doomsday Bunker Upgrade - Chapter 28
Chapter 28: Forced Ventilation!
However, even as the upgrade was completed, the bunker was still filled with smog and harmful gases. Chen Xin immediately wanted to engage the forced ventilation function to circulate the air.
He found the switch for the function, but nothing happened even after he pressed it twice.
Chen Xin was taken aback and hurriedly examined its surroundings. Only then he realized that the function required electricity.
Fortunately, the ventilation circuit had already been connected to the switchroom. He only needed to turn on the circuit to engage the forced ventilation function.
After messing around for a while, Chen Xin finally felt relieved when he heard the sounds from the duct brought by the spinning fan and the high-speed airflow.
However, the batteries had limited electricity after all. Chen Xin then filled the generator with fuel and started it up as he was worried the electricity might be insufficient. Then, he collapsed onto the sofa in the living room.
After forcing the ventilation for about half an hour, Chen Xin thought that it was enough. He took off the gas mask, sniffed the air, then disengaged the function when he felt like he could not smell the smog anymore.
Although the function saved Chen Xin’s life at that time, it did not need to be turned on all the time. Not only was it very noisy when turned on, but it also consumed a lot of electricity.
If it was not necessary, it would be better to leave it turned off and save on resources.
After he did so, Chen Xin returned to the sofa. Only then did he let go of the anxiety and panic caused by the incident. He started to think about what happened.
That incident was alarming for him as his seemingly safe bunker still had loopholes. If it was not for the upgrade system, he might have already suffocated.
If he did not wake up on time, he would probably be smothered to death in his sleep.
Therefore, if Chen Xin wanted to survive, he had to increase his alertness. Simultaneously, he had to make good use of the system and upgrade the bunker as much as possible to better protect his life.
Through that incident, Chen Xin had also determined that if it was not necessary, all the survival points would be invested in upgrading the bunker instead of other disposable items. Other than that, he would need to save up points in case of an emergency.
If it was not for Chen Xin having just enough survival points, even if the system could be upgraded, he would have insufficient points to do so. In the end, he may still have suffocated to death due to an overdose of harmful gases.
Chen Xin obtained ten points a day at that time. The reason why he managed to save up the required hundred points to upgrade the ventilation system was that he gained an achievement when The System first rounded-up his survival points.
“Rewarded with one hundred survival points for owning a bunker.”
Through that, Chen Xin also learned that an alternative way to obtain survival points for The System was through achievements.
However, he was still miserable about what kind of achievements were there. He did not research it very thoroughly. Therefore, he was still depending on the ten points awarded daily.
Of course, as the bunker was upgraded, Chen Xin’s living conditions would improve, and the daily rewarded points would also increase accordingly.
Therefore, Chen Xin was very confident about his future. Even if the world came to an end, he would be able to live in better conditions with the help of The System as long as he worked hard.
With that belief, Chen Xin cheered up again.
Although he was choked by the harmful gases, his mind became sober as the effect of the gases gradually subsided with the oxygen tanks providing him oxygen.
When he recovered, Chen Xin thought about it seriously. The System’s condition for increasing the daily rewarded points was to improve his living conditions. Then, what were the things in the bunker that could be done to improve that?
Chen Xin took out his portable notebook in which he recorded some of his findings in the past two days.
He flipped through the records and looked at the contents he had listed down. After thinking about it, he took out a pen, turned to a new page, and drew a new table on it. The first line he had written down was medical treatment.
That incident reminded Chen Xin that the first criteria of survival were to ensure that he could stay alive. Therefore, a complete medical infrastructure would exponentially increase his chance of survival.
In an environment where there was a lack of doctors and medicines, Chen Xin could not leave for a doctor’s visit no matter how ill he was. On top of that, he only had some common medicines in storage. It would still be okay if he had caught the flu or fever, but what if it was an uncommon disease? If that happened, he might as well just shut his eyes and wait to die or stab himself with a knife.
Hence, a complete set of medical facilities was exactly what Chen Xin needed the most. It would be best if there could be a medic room, or even better if there was a medical bay that could treat someone who had their brains blown off like in science-fictional movies.
Fortunately, The System existed. Chen Xin believed that it was not difficult to accomplish that. It was only a matter of accumulating sufficient survival points.
After careful consideration, Chen Xin added food before medical treatment.
Eating was an inelastic demand for everyone every day. Nobody would dare to say that they did not need food.
It was the same for Chen Xin, he also needed to eat.
Although he had stored enough food in the bunker, it would eventually run out. That was why he built a greenhouse and got it sorted out in the first two days. He had even sown the first batch of seeds.
‘Maybe I should upgrade the greenhouse next?’
Chen Xin listed the greenhouse as a priority to be upgraded, but not as his first choice.
That was because he had to consider how to maintain the greenhouse’s operations before upgrading it.
Chen Xin used supplementary lighting to provide artificial sunlight to the plants, but those supplementary lights consumed a high amount of power. If he wanted to upgrade the greenhouse, he would first need to consider upgrading the electrical system to ensure there would be sufficient energy.
As he thought of the greenhouse, Chen Xin decided to pay a visit there. He did not know if the seeds he planted before had sprouted.
Chen Xin was very concerned about it. After all, it would directly affect if he could eat fresh vegetables, and if he could still eat after his reserves had been depleted.
