Chapter 33: The Little Prince
Alice was so angry that she paced back and forth on the bird’s body. Suddenly, she stomped her feet fiercely, as if she had made up her mind. Then, she said coldly, “Knight Commander Willard, are you sure you don’t want to return to Syr Town?”
Willard kept shaking his head, as if he did not dare to yield to Alice at all. He had to complete the mission that Duke Masefield had given him. Otherwise, he would be fired or even be beheaded as his punishment! This completely depended on how the Duke felt after hearing this!
“Fine! If you’re not going back, then I’ll go back by myself!” Alice spat out these vicious words and angrily walked towards the bird’s neck.
When Willard saw that Alice actually had the impulse to jump down, he panicked so much that his legs went weak and he almost knelt down. He anxiously stepped forward and advised her, “Duchess, Duchess, please calm down. Don’t do anything foolish!”
Alice looked down at the bottomless sky. She could not see the green mountains on the ground, nor could she see the yellow soil and mud. She could only see soft clouds. She gently clenched her fists and coldly threatened, “Are we going back or not?”
Knight Commander Willard was on the verge of tears. If he did not send Alice safely back to Hilmar City, or if Alice had met with an accident under his escort, Duke Masefield would definitely not let him off!
Thinking of the possible severe consequences, Willard was so afraid that he broke out in cold sweat!
Perhaps it was because his mind had become even more brilliant in the midst of his horror that he suddenly recalled Alice’s affectionate words to Adrian before she left. He immediately realized the problem and hurriedly said, “Duchess, if you jump from such a high place, you definitely won’t be able to survive.”
“Furthermore, if you die, that kid will never have the chance to see you again. Do you really want to do this?” Willard panted heavily as he spoke. It was obvious how nervous he was.
Alice didn’t want to jump in the first place. She just wanted to scare the Knight Commander Willard behind her. However, now that she heard Willard’s words, she didn’t want to jump anymore.
After all, when Adrian came all the way to Hilmar City to see her, she didn’t want him to find out that she was nowhere to be found, only to discover a grave overgrown with weeds.
Alice took a deep breath. Then, she suddenly smiled bitterly. She did not expect that she would finally return to the cage that had imprisoned her for almost ten years. She sighed and said, “I understand. Take me to see Father.”
“Yes, yes, yes. Duchess, please come back to your seat. Don’t take things too hard.” Willard waved his hands like an adult coaxing a child. His tone was gentle and nervous. After all, he was afraid that something he didn’t want to see would happen in the next moment.
On the other hand, Alice naturally had no intention of staying in such a dangerous place. Thus, she lowered her head and returned to her seat on the bird’s back.
When Willard saw that Alice was safe, he finally heaved a sigh of relief. He was sweating profusely as if he was experiencing heat exhaustion.
Despite the fright that Knight Commander Willard experienced, he did not forget to chuckle humorously. “You may not know that I have a heart disease, Duchess.”
Meanwhile, the bird was diving down. Clearly, they were about to reach their destination.
Alice looked at the familiar yet strange and beautiful city in front of her. She could not help but be slightly stunned and muttered to herself, “Willard, this is the first time I’ve discovered that Hilmar City is so beautiful.”
Looking at Alice’s shocked expression, Willard couldn’t help but flash a sorrowful expression.
As a subordinate, he more or less knew about Duke Masefield.
Thus, Willard naturally knew that the poor Alice had lost her mother when she was eight years old. Ever since then, she had been constantly monitored by her paranoid father. He had never allowed her to leave the sight of his men for even half a step, in fear that something might happen to her.
However, this excessive protection caused Alice to lose her freedom. She seemed like a noble princess, but in reality, she was just a prisoner who looked more glamorous on the outside.
However, Willard didn’t think that Duke Masefield had done anything wrong. After all, Alice’s mother had unfortunately died in an accident at the Spiritual Beast Forest due to her frequent trips out.
Thus, there was a reason for Masefield’s protection over Alice. He was afraid that the same disaster would occur on his daughter. However, it was just that this protection was too strict, and it was based on depriving his daughter of her freedom.
Alice’s desire for freedom was not wrong either. She should not have been locked up in the castle since she was eight years old. From then on, she could not step foot anywhere except to study at Kerley Academy.
She should have been like other people her age — free to go shopping, travel the world, find men she liked, and live a complete life.
At the thought of this, Willard looked a little disappointed. He looked at the familiar castle that was getting closer and said slowly, “Duchess, we’re here.”
Then, the bird gradually landed on the ground. Willard, as well as the guards and knights who were also riding the bird, all stepped on the hard ground. In front of them was the Duke’s castle.
“Duchess, please go in and meet Duke Masefield,” said Willard respectfully as he bowed.
With a cold expression, Alice gently lifted her aqua blue dress and entered the castle gate.
She followed the familiar path in her memory and slowly walked to Duke Masefield’s residence, where her father was.
The two guards at the door recognized Alice. They bowed respectfully and said, “Duchess.”
Alice nodded and quickly walked in. She immediately saw her father sitting in the hall, but there was an important guest sitting in front of him.
Almost everyone in the entire country had seen that esteemed guest.
Alice’s face turned slightly pale and she gripped her skirt tightly with both hands. She had a bad premonition that something bad was about to happen.
“Father,” said Alice coldly. Then, she bowed to the guest and said indifferently, “Your Highness.”
The man whom Alice called “Your Highness” was the Little Prince of the Kingdom of Tols, McMillen.
When Masefield saw the arrival of his daughter, his constantly serious face seemed to relax. He said softly, “Alice, quickly sit over here. I have something to talk to you about.”
However, Alice did not listen to her father. She still felt contempt for her father after he had deceived her by pretending to be sick. Thus. she said coldly, “What is it that you can’t talk about while I’m standing? Just say it.”
