Chapter 24: Raising a Pet
The seashells weren’t hard enough. They’d break when he used a little more force.
Earlier on, he had only managed to get through a few days because there were enough of them on the beach.
Recently, he had almost finished using all the seashells on the beach. There wasn’t much left.
Now that he had a small knife, it would be much more convenient for him to do things in the future.
He put away the knife and walked to other places. He saw some fruits, but there was nothing else.
There was no need for him to bring the fruits away. Along the way, he had seen quite a number of fruit trees, they were enough to fill his stomach for a long time.
Seeing that it was getting late, David gathered his things and continued south, the last part of the circle.
If he still could not find suitable soil, he would have to expand his search area tomorrow.
This time, his luck was not very good. When he turned to the south, he was near the beach. The soil quality was similar to those at where he lived.
It seemed that he could only continue his search tomorrow and return home for now.
When he returned to his lodging, the kit had already woken up and was hissing non-stop.
“Looks like you’re hungry,” David said, laughing to himself.
If he had found the clay soil earlier, he could have made the pottery and made soup.
If he were to feed the kit fish soup, he could at least raise it for some time.
He took a look at his inventory, there were still three small bird eggs he had specially left behind.
The kit’s cries grew louder but also weaker. David could not care for his own reluctance and beat up one of the bird eggs.
He placed it in front of the kit to see if it would eat it.
When the kit smelled the fishy scent, it straightened its body and stretched out its head to sniff it.
Then, it stretched out its tongue and slowly licked. Soon, it finished the bird egg inside the shell.
It lifted its head and looked up at David, hissing again as if to say, ‘I want more.’
David was helpless. Since it wanted to eat, he could only beat up the two remaining bird eggs for it.
The kit finished eating very quickly. As if satisfied, it curled up and fell asleep.
David glanced at his current stock. Of course, the amount of fish he had went without saying. His Fishing Skill was his highest level skill at the moment.
Unknowingly, he had reached Level 5.
He believed that as long as he had the chance to go out to sea, with proper tools, he could catch big sharks.
Next, there were the fruits picked from the trees by the pond. He was getting tired of eating them these few days.
When he headed out earlier, he had found a lot of fruits. However, he didn’t pick them because he wanted the space to store the soil.
He could go pick some tomorrow to improve the taste of his food.
Then, there was the unfinished rabbit meat. He didn’t eat much each time and would stop when he was 70% full.
This was an island after all, food was the most important.
Although he had a lot of food on hand now, there was no guarantee that an accident wouldn’t happen one day.
Therefore, he removed the internal organs of all the fish he caught, spread salt on them, and hung them up to make dried fish.
Just like today, when he went out to do something, he would definitely be able to carry some dry rations on him so that he would not go hungry.
He still wasn’t sure if he could eat the animal corpse he brought back today.
I’m going to leave it for the night and see about it tomorrow.
After he peeled off the skin, he realized that such skin was very special.
He did not throw away the rabbit’s skin and hung it at the side. If he accumulated enough of them, he could even sew them together to make shirts and pants.
Seeing that it was getting late, he went to the area where he had set up the traps for a look.
He did not expect to gain so much today. He even found a pheasant.
This pheasant didn’t have a long tail, so it was obvious that it was a female.
He had eaten quite a lot of food, so there was no need to eat the pheasant for now.
After he returned, he tied the hen to a tree and started weaving with vines again.
Before nightfall, a large cage was finally made.
It was just the right size to lock the pheasant in.
“I looked at the others just now. Many of them haven’t been able to eat for a few days and are about to starve to death.”
“I saw them too. Seven days is already a person’s limit.”
“David, on the other hand, is completely different. Not only does he have food, he’s even started raising animals now.”
“A kit and a pheasant. He’s living a pastoral life now, isn’t he?”
“I’m so envious of him.”
“Just watching him makes me want to join such a program. It doesn’t feel like it will be difficult at all.”
David finished tidying up and fell asleep on the bed.
In one day, other than picking up the corpse of a wild beast and its kit, nothing else was done.
There were still many things waiting for him to do. He closed his eyes and dozed off.
The scenes in the main livestream had already cut to other locations. There were still 97 people left yesterday, but now there were only 95 of them.
“Did you guys notice that there’s something amiss with the numbers?”
“I think so. Didn’t three people die during the battle with David? There should be 94 people left. Why are there 95?”
“Could it be that the organizers have miscalculated and missed out one person?”
“Is there any other reason other than this? It’s just a small matter. Don’t be so bothered about it.”
The scene cut to other locations. Some people were in danger and were fighting a wild beast.
The battle looked very intense and heated. Many people forgot about the problem they had just discovered.
David was awakened by a hissing sound. He opened his eyes and looked at the hazy sky. There was already a bit of the sun’s rays on the horizon.
He got off the bed and went to the kit.
Upon discovering his arrival, the kit began to cry out in excitement.
David smiled helplessly. “You seem so happy when you need me to feed you.”
The kit found his finger and rubbed against it. It was so adorable.
David held his chin with his right hand and pondered. “There are no more bird eggs. What should I feed you?”
He thought about it carefully. Of all his food, only fish was left.
He wasn’t sure if the kit could eat fish or if it would get any side effects after eating it.
However, his current objective was not to raise pets, but to survive here.
He took a fish, minced the meat, and placed it in front of the kit.
The kit sniffed it and turned its head away, refusing to eat.
When David saw this, he said indifferently, “Other than fish meat, I have nothing else. If you refuse to eat, you can just wait for death.”
As if it understood his words, the little body that was about to leave stopped again, it looked extremely conflicted.
After circling twice on the spot, it walked over to the fish and sniffed it once more.
It slowly closed her eyes, opened her mouth, and ate the fish with great difficulty.
David couldn’t help but be surprised. Mammals had to drink milk when they were born. It was their instinct.
It could be seen that this kit didn’t like the fish meat.
But the kit had changed its mind after he had casually made a remark earlier.
Could it be that it understood his words and knew that it would die if it refused to eat?
