Chapter 15: I’ll Fight Alone, Without Senior’s Help!

The spirit stone mine which had been discovered by the Chen family was located at the intersection between Guanyu City and Black Cloud City. It was surrounded by mountains and lush forests, and occasionally, the roar of magical beasts would rumble through the air. The duel was set to take place on the plains above the spirit stone mine, which would be claimed by the winner.
The Wang family of Black Cloud City had already arrived with the Nether Saber Sect in tow. There was a sea of people watching, probably thousands of them. The Wang family were dressed in armored uniforms, like soldiers ready for battle, while the members of the Nether Saber Sect wore black tights and a look of arrogance in their eyes. Not uncharacteristic haughtiness for a sect which practiced saber techniques.
“Exalted Disciple, it looks like the Chen family and their sect didn’t dare to show up,” the head of the Wang family said, practically simpering with flattery. “The Dao Sect must have known they were too weak to be a match for you. Do you think we should wait longer, or leave?”
His words filled the disciples of the Nether Saber Sect with disdain. Although they weren’t the most prestigious sect in the Heavenly Domain, they had nothing to fear from the Dao Sect.
“We’ll keep waiting. If they’re not here in two hours, we’ll leave!” said the disciple at the head of the sect. He was Wei Pan, the seventh direct disciple of the Nether Saber Sect. His cultivation levels had reached the mid-stages of the Crystallization Realm, on the verge of breaking through to its late-stages.
“As you wish.” The head of the Wang family retreated to the back of the crowd in hasty obedience.
“Elder Lin, do you consider a duel between mere juniors worthy of your attention?” Wei Pan turned sideways and looked at a middle-aged man in a black robe.
“I still remember my feud with the Dao Sect from long ago. I haven’t paid them back in kind yet. How can I give this martial arts contest a miss? Remember, when the fighting starts, show no mercy. Pummel them to the ground!”
Elder Lin’s voice was full of icy indifference. When he had returned to the sect, he had happened to meet Wei Pan and the others. After asking what was going on, he had followed them over. No average joe from the Dao Sect would be able to beat him–not in his current realm–but crippling one of them might warm his heart.
“Don’t worry, we’ll see to it. And I might not even have to intervene.”
Wei Pan’s spine straightened with pride. He had studied the Way before arriving, and he knew the Dao Sect was one of the weakest sects in the Heavenly Domain. The true disciple of the Dao Sect seemed to be only at the perfected late-stages of the Foundation Establishment Realm–not even the Crystallization Realm. What good was such an unworthy opponent? Any of his juniors could send a weakling like that to a slow and painful death.
Two hours passed quickly as they chatted.
“So the Dao Sect really is too afraid to show themselves,” Wei Pan jeered loudly between laughter. “What a pity, Elder Lin. You won’t be able to see the look on their faces when they’re bloody and bruised.”
“How cowardly,” Elder Lin said disdainfully.
“Over there!” someone from the Wang family shouted suddenly.
Everyone turned toward the voice. Not far away, a group of people was walking towards them.
It was the Chen family.
“What do you know… they had the guts to turn up after all. Are they that eager to die?” Wei Pan’s eyes were full of mockery.
“Senior, let me fight them!” piped up a skinny disciple with slitted, ruthless eyes.
“Sure!” Wei Pan nodded. This disciple was at the early-stages of the Crystallization Realm; he’d be more than a match for the Dao Sect disciples, who had yet to break through to the Crystallization Realm.
“Chen Wu, why are you so late? I thought you had given up and didn’t dare to come!” the head of the Wang family called out, emboldened by the presence of the Nether Saber Sect.
“I was giving you the chance to admit defeat. Since you’re too proud to walk away, don’t expect any mercy later!” Chen Wu shot back in mockery.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. You make yourself sound like such a saint. Let’s see if you’ll be half as gracious when you lose later,” the head of the Wang family said indignantly.
Both families had arrived to settle their dispute. The head of the Wang family quickly retreated to the back of the throng.
“Exalted Disciple, we’re counting on you!”
Likewise, Chen Wu slunk back to make room for Su’en and Ye Lingyun.
“Mhm.” Su’en nodded and walked forward.
“Are you the most senior true disciple of the Dao Sect?” Wei Pan gave Su’en a once-over. “You’ve got some guts, coming here.” Meanwhile, he wondered why he could not see Su’en’s cultivation level. He must have used some shielding methods; it was the only reasonable explanation.
“What’s so scary about settling a little spat?” Su’en beamed, voice placid.
“A little spat?” Su’en’s relaxed tone and words caused Wei Pan’s gaze to darken. The Dao Sect was weak. They were clearly less powerful than the Nether Saber Sect, but still dared to throw their weight around them. He was a little taken aback.
“How dare you!”
The other disciples of the Nether Saber Sect burst out into protests.
Wei Pan raised his hand to silence his juniors, then said threateningly, “With that big talk, I take it you’re pretty confident in your abilities. Then surely you understand that casualties in battle are only to be expected.”
“Yes, and…?” Su’en said pleasantly.
Wei Pan was irritated by his calm demeanor. He was clearly but an average fighter–what right did he have to be so fearless? Immediately, he said, “In that case, I’ll show you the cost of being all bark and no bite.”
But Su’en merely smiled coolly.
“With so few of you? I doubt that.”
Wei Pan and his other disciples broke out into outraged laughter.
“Interesting. I’ve met suicidal maniacs before, but none like you. You think all of us can’t beat the two of you?” Wei Pan continued to size up Su’en and Ye Lingyun. A perfected late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator and an early-stage Crystallization Realm cultivator. Who were they to be so cocky?
“Even without my senior, I could take on all of you,” a voice said coldly.
Ye Lingyun stepped out from her place by Su’en’s side and ran a frosty stare over the disciples of the Nether Saber Sect.
Her body was ready. Without waiting, she attacked.
