Chapter 56: Chapter 56: I’ll Make a Hammer
“This is slightly strange… Bronze… Steel… Alloy…???”
An Wen became stunned when he saw the row of icons in the Metallic Minerals Forging Skills List.
Unlike the Woodworking Skills List and the Stone Crafts List, the icons of various skills were not immediately displayed. Instead, there were several category pages.
At present, only the Bronze category page was lit.
The other category pages beside it – Steel, Alloy, and other lists with question mark icons – were all grayed out.
An Wen opened the Bronze category page.
A familiar sight greeted him. At the top of the page were three main skill icons, and beneath them were cascading lists that were also interlinked with one another at certain junctions.
“The first type is the agricultural machinery. It is linked to cold weapons and defense equipment downstream, and after joining with the other lists, there are crossbows and hidden weapons.”
“The second type is the accessories. It is linked to machinery parts downstream, and after joining with other lists, there are micro-components and intricate structures.”
“The third type is the ritual vessels. It starts with vessels like cauldrons and bells, which are linked to medium-large-sized castings. After joining with the other lists, there are combat vehicles.
Looking at the three lists, An Wen found that they were actually similar to the Woodworking Skills List.
He scrolled downwards to see what the ultimate products were.
“Eh? There are not three, but six of them?”
An Wen was slightly surprised when he saw the six icons in the last row.
Nevertheless, the more icons in the last row, the merrier.
“A legendary sword!”
The first of the six icons depicted a legendary sword. It did not have a name, so it could be possible that the player would be able to name it. Its description simply read: “Everlasting sword so sharp it cuts through iron as if it were mud.”
“I suppose I have to make it first, so I could find out its detailed attributes.”
An Wen muttered to himself. He looked at the second icon.
“Legendary armor!”
Well, just like the first, the second icon had no detailed description.
At last, the third icon had a detailed description.
“Scarlet Dandelion!”
Made from intricate micro-components, the Scarlet Dandelion consists of 108,000 fine, fur-like needles. While blooming, all creatures within a 20-meter radius would be unable to defend themselves against it and will die upon being struck.
Phenomenal!
It was essentially the enhanced version of the Torrential Pear Blossom Needle.
The fourth icon was…
“Torrential Thunderlight Arrow!”
Made from bronze alloy, the Torrential Thunderlight Arrow contains 3500 crossbows. Upon firing, arrows are released with a force as powerful as the explosion of thunder and lightning, its penetration strength was unparalleled.
“This force that is as powerful as the explosion of thunder and lightning is probably gunpowder.”
When An Wen saw the fourth icon, he was not as interested in the Torrential Thunderlight Arrow. After all, no matter how powerful it was, it would still be incomparable to the Type 1024 Close-in Weapon System.
However, he was extremely interested in the ‘force as powerful as the explosion of thunder and lightning’.
Such a description implied that it was not powered by machinery, so this ‘force’ could only be gunpowder.
After all, it would be challenging for him to unlock smokeless powder and more advanced types of gunpowder.
The dream of being able to make use of Lorentz force would be even more impossible and beyond reach.
“Well, gunpowder still works though.”
An Wen was not too particular about it – it was already a great improvement now that he had gunpowder.
When he unlocked more advanced technology in the future and the technology in the other world caught up with – or even surpassed – the real world, that was the time when he could be considered extraordinary.
At present, however, he simply needed to develop and progress step by step.
Moving on to the fifth icon…
“War Fortress!”
Upon seeing that, An Wen’s eyes lit up.
It is 160 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 35 meters tall, with a front armor more than 5 meters thick and rear armor 2 meters thick. Propelled by 8 gigantic steam engines, it moves on 16 gigantic continuous tracks and is fully equipped with weapons over its entire body. A beast of steel, made purely for war and combat.
Mind-blowing!
That was marvelous and utterly incredible!
An Wen’s eyes were glowing extremely brightly, just like when he first saw the Ancient Flying Eagle.
However, as compared to the Ancient Flying Eagle, steel was the true romance of men – the gigantic War Fortress that was made of steel was simply extremely enticing.
An Wen stared at the icon for a long time before he finally looked at the last icon.
“Insect Nest Exterminator Giant Cannon!”
There was nothing extremely remarkable about the giant cannon. It was big, long, and thick, with each shell weighing five tonnes. It could only be fixed and deployed at one location or installed on the War Fortress.
An Wen was not very interested in the giant cannon this time.
However, what he was bothered by was the name of the giant cannon – Insect Nest Exterminator.
“Insect nest? Am I going to be fighting against an insect ‘race’ in the latter part of the game?”
An Wen furrowed his brows as he recalled the things that he knew about various insect races.
The Zerg from the game StarCraft?
Tyranids?
Or are they the weak arachnids from the movie Starship Troopers?
“I will be doomed if I encounter Tyranids…”
An Wen pursed his lips. When he thought about the virtually invincible Tyranids from the game Warhammer, his head began to hurt.
I hope the insect race in the game world is not too powerful.
After taking a few more glances at the War Fortress icon and its description, An Wen lit up the fundamental skill icons before closing the list reluctantly.
Nevertheless, he remained grounded and constructed a blacksmith furnace first, followed by a factory. With that, he could make his own tools.
Time to get down to work!
An Wen went to the blacksmith furnace and picked up the iron hammer.
After weighing it in his hand, he frowned.
There was a feeling of weirdness when he tried to wield it.
“I can’t wield this iron hammer smoothly. I shall make one myself first.”
“After all, as the saying goes, ‘craftsmen must first sharpen their tools for them to do a good job’.”
An Wen decided that he would first make an iron hammer with attributes that were also comfortable and suitable for him to wield.
Light the fire!
Put the ore in!
With the additional effect of the attributes, the copper ore swiftly melted into a copper liquid at an observable speed.
“That’s pretty fast.”
An Wen watched as the copper liquid boiled before he mixed in the tin metal, resulting in the alloy bronze.
Then, he poured the copper liquid into a mold to be cooled and cast into shape.
After spending fifteen minutes, An Wen obtained a rectangular-shaped copper piece.
“Check out my Disorder Splitting Wind Hammer skill.”
Placing the copper piece of the hammer on the smithing table, An Wen picked up his original hammer and began hammering.
Clang clang clang…
An Wen turned into a hardworking blacksmith forging metal.
He had the knowledge of forging infused into his mind, in addition to being adept at martial arts.
Very quickly, An Wen mastered the technique of forging metal, and the sounds of metal hitting against each other became more rhythmic.
Clang… clang… clang clang, Clang… clang… clang clang, Clang… clang… clang clang…. Clang ~ Clang ~ Clang ~ Clang ~
The impurities in the copper piece were quickly hammered away.
An Wen placed it into the furnace to heat it up… then cooled it down… and hammered it again. He heated it up again… then cooled it down… and hammered it…
Through the repeated process of heating, cooling, and hammering, the copper hammer became more sturdy.
“It should be almost done.”
After hammering 300 times, An Wen looked at the copper piece of the hammer and felt that it was ready.
After this, he made a handle for the hammer and fused it to the copper piece.
With that, the newly-made bronze hammer was complete.
It was An Wen’s first product, and he was quite pleased.
When the newly-made hammer cooled down and he retrieved it, a bolt of white light flashed.
“Bronze Tool: Blacksmith Hammer”
“Grade: Excellent”
“Attributes: Hammering Strength +15%, Impurity Removal Effectiveness +15%”
“Attack Strength: 35 – 80”
“Durability: 150”
Truthfully, An Wen was extremely dissatisfied when he saw the attributes of the copper hammer.
“What did I make a hammer for?!”
