Feature Shows Extravaganza - Chapter 48
Chapter 48: New Term
Monday, March 1st.
The new term started today!
A grand school-opening ceremony was taking place at Zhonghai First Primary School, and the grizzled principal was slowly reading his congratulatory speech off the manuscript. In the audience, Pan Da and Du Bishu felt like yawning.
“How much longer is the old man going to talk for?”
Du Bishu complained. “It’s been half an hour, and I can’t feel my legs.”
“Who knows. If it’s anything like last term, he’ll be talking for another 15 minutes at least…”
A shadow cast over them before Pan Da could go on.
The tall figure was their class teacher. Behind her glasses, her eyes were spitting fire. Her face was expressionless, and she looked very intimidating.
“Pan Da! Du Bishu!”
After calling out their names, the teacher said coldly, “Where’s the class president? Take a note of their names. They’ll be responsible for cleaning duty today.
Pan Da put on a long face and kicked Du Bishu after the teacher walked off to inspect the other areas.
“Damn it!
“It’s all your fault!”
Du Bishu grinned. “Don’t worry. She’s going to attend the staff meeting this afternoon. No one’s going to monitor us.”
“So, no one’s going to tell us off even if we don’t sweep the floor?”
Pan Da’s frustration was instantly gone, and he no longer found the punishment insufferable.
The principal had probably been using the same speech half his life, and Pan Da’s prediction was correct. The speech indeed finished after about 15 minutes.
Once the ceremony was over, all the class teachers led their students to their respective classrooms.
Pan Da and Du Bishu were no exception.
They were students of Class G of Year 5.
Teachers would usually spend their first day of the new term examining everyone’s winter vacation homework, and there would be no official classes.
The first period was Chinese Literature. The teacher had a thing for black coats and was as round as a ball. He examined all 40 students’ winter vacation homework—that was, if they had written a diary every day.
He opened Pan Da’s diary, quickly flipped it through, and praised the boy. “Well done! It seems that Pan Da has had a very eventful winter vacation!”
Teehee!
Pan Da rubbed his head shyly when he heard the teacher’s compliment.
Then, it was Du Bishu’s turn.
[February 15th, Monday.
Pan Da’s mother told him to buy some vinegar for her, but he only realized that he forgot to bring money with him when he got to the supermarket. The cashier sneered at him. “A pauper shouldn’t pretend to be a rich man! Look at your clothes, you’re never going to afford the vinegar!” Pan Da was very angry and took out his Illusion Rings…]
The teacher’s face darkened.
Du Bishu could faintly sense that something was wrong, and he swallowed.
With an expressionless face, the teacher closed Du Bishu’s diary and asked, “Du Bishu, did you copy someone else’s diary?”
“No! I wrote it myself!” Du Bishu shook his head and denied.
Hah!
The teacher’s eyes flickered. He stepped back to Pan Da’s side, requested for his diary, opened it, and put it in front of Du Bishu. “Now, Du Bishu, please read the first paragraph on this page aloud!”
“Sh*t!”
Du Bishu felt a chill run down his spine and realized that he was doomed!
Picking up Pan Da’s diary with trembling hands, he read it with a stammer in front of the whole class. “February 15th, Monday. Mom had me buy some vinegar for her, but I only realized that I forgot to bring any money with me when I got to the supermarket…”
The teacher applauded as soon as he finished reading. “Du Bishu, good job. You’ll become an excellent transcriber one day!”
Du Bishu was speechless.
Ashamed, he lowered his head and admitted his fault. “Sir, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“Glad to hear that!”
They were only kids, and the teacher didn’t want to be too strict with them.
He flicked Du Bishu’s forehead with his fingers and scolded, “Promise me you won’t do it again!”
“I promise!”
“Good. Wang Jiaming, you’re next!”
[February 15th, Monday. Du Bishu helped Pan Da’s mother with buying some vinegar, but he only realized that he didn’t have any money on him when he got to the supermarket…]
The teacher didn’t know what to say.
One more student was made to stay behind for cleaning duty that day.
…
After the last period, in the 5G classroom.
Du Bishu and Pan Da were chasing Wang Jiaming around with broomsticks in their hands.
“Why did you copy my diary?!” Pan Da roared.
“Who the hell do you think you are?!” That was Du Bishu.
The former bully had curled up in a corner with his head buried in his hands, looking as helpless as a lamb.
He pleaded in a pitiful voice. “Brothers, please forgive me! I didn’t mean to! I only realized that I hadn’t finished my diary when I came to school today, so I just picked a random one out of the stack. How was I supposed to know…”
How was he supposed to know that someone had already copied from it?!
Wang Jiaming found himself the most unfortunate person, for he had just copied the copied version of a diary!
How often did that happen?
The teacher had read the diaries of Pan Da, Du Bishu, and his in turn…
The class erupted with laughter.
How could the king of Zhonghai First Primary School be humiliated like this…
After running around for a while, Pan Da and Du Bishu dropped their broomsticks and told Wang Jiaming, “We’re very angry today, so what should we do about the cleaning duty?”
“Just leave it to me! Please go take a break! I’ll finish it myself!” said Wang Jiaming hastily.
Pan Da and Du Bishu nodded in satisfaction.
“Dada, let’s go! We should check out the convenience store. I heard that Yang Ming from Class 6B is going to organize a yo-yo competition…”
“Let’s go have a look!”
Du Bishu reached into the deepest corner of his school bag and took out the Sprinting Meteor he had hidden there. “Let’s take this! I’m going to defeat them!”
Pan Da nodded. The two boys then ran out of the classroom and headed for the convenience store.
Quite a few capable players and onlookers had gathered around in the clearing next to the convenience store.
The player belonged to various classes in the school and had gathered here for the competition Yang Ming had set up. They were going to find out who was the best player in this primary school today!
“Yang Ming, you’re the best! Kick that loser’s ass!”
The “loser” they were referring to turned around and yelled at the girls. “Don’t call me that! I’m the real hero here!”
“No, you’re not! Loser!”
The girls couldn’t care less about what he’s called. All they knew was that Yang Ming was the cutest guy.
Yang Ming was a slender boy in a white jacket. He had well-defined features and a very handsome face. No wonder the girl had all fallen for him.
“Yang Ming, mastering Silver Dragon from Wonderland doesn’t make you the best player of this school! I’m going to show you what real power is today!”
Quick footsteps came toward them at that moment.
“Did I hear ‘the best player’ and ‘real power’?”
The poker-face school dean arrived with a few tall security officers and said indifferently, “Everyone stay where they are. Hand me all your yo-yos. That girl over there, don’t move! I saw your fairy wand already! Give it up!”
Du Bishu and Pan Da just happened to arrive at the scene at that moment, and both were dumbfounded.
Before they had time to run away, a sharp-eyed security officer saw that Du Bishu was trying to hide his yo-yo, so he immediately reported to the dean. “Sir, there are two more over there!”
“Are you going to give it up, or do I have to search you?”
Pan Da and Du Bishu were speechless.
