Chapter 698: 697 She doesn’t hate you
Seven in the evening
Liao Dongxing called again, and when Qin Mu saw the incoming call, he immediately handed his phone to Jiang Liu.
Gu Yan straightened himself up on the sofa, his deep, piercing eyes focused on Jiang Liu. Both Luo Haofeng and Qin Mu wore sternly serious expressions. Liao Dongxing had changed the location for the meeting over the phone, cancelling the original arrangement at the club that night.
“Where does Director Liao want to meet?”
Jiang Liu asked in a steady voice, a hint of coldness seeping into his tone.
Liao Dongxing gave an address. Jiang Liu didn’t hesitate and simply cautioned, “No matter where, as long as Director Liao ensures Ranran’s safety, the rest is negotiable.”
“Be assured, Mo General, I promise you will see Miss Wen safe and sound.”
“Ah Mu, the place Liao Dongxing mentioned, do you know where it is?”
As soon as the call ended, Luo Haofeng puzzledly looked at Qin Mu. They knew that Liao Dongxing would change the location because they were at a disadvantage with Wen Ran in the hands of the opposition.
Qin Mu’s brows knitted together, his face gloomy. “I know, there’s a rapid river at the foot of that mountain. Liao Dongxing arranged the meeting on top of the mountain. He’s probably up to no good.”
“Liao Dongxing’s wife and son are with us, he must know this. But he didn’t mention a thing, which indicates that Liao Dongxing doesn’t care about his wife and son. All that matters most to him is his own self.”
Gu Yan calmly analysed this. Qin Mu then described the terrain of the mountain to them. Feeling still not assured, he called his grandfather no matter what.
**
In the night devoid of stars and moon, the sky was as black as spilt ink.
The wind that brushed against their ears carried the scent of impending rain. As their vehicle ascended the mountain, Qin Mu said to Jiang Liu who was sitting beside him, “Don’t get nervous later. Liao Dongxing will definitely have you exchange the evidence with him for Wen Ran. If you go personally, they will discover that you are not the real person. I will hand over the evidence at that time.”
“Mmm, I understand.”
Jiang Liu knew that his role was to impersonate Mo Xiuchen. The rest would be handled by Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng.
Perhaps due to the impending rain, the temperature on the mountain top was relatively low. The mountain wind that hit their faces had a chilling effect, causing their hearts to pound nervously.
Liao Dongxing and Qin Sen had already reached the mountaintop. Standing far away, they could see them by the cliff edge. Qin Mu clenched his fists tightly and exchanged a glance with Luo Haofeng before they all strode towards them.
It was obvious that Liao Dongxing was very familiar with the geography of the area as he didn’t even use a flashlight. The distant car headlights cast diffused light. After being scattered by the trees and figures, the view wasn’t very clear.
Upon their approach, Liao Dongxing immediately commanded his men to bring Wen Ran out, while someone called out to stop them, “Don’t come any closer.”
The moment Gu Yan saw Wen Ran, tied up and gagged, he immediately shouted out worriedly, “Ranran!”
Both Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng’s faces paled, whereas Jiang Liu instinctively moved forward a step. Taking advantage of the dim light that made his face unrecognisable, he desperately screamed, “Ranran.”
Wen Ran saw clearly that the person several meters away was not Xiuchen.
It was Jiang Liu. She hadn’t met this man before, but she instantly recognised him, since he looked a lot like Xiuchen, especially his posture, his voice, and his facial features that weren’t clear due to the poor lighting.
Another man then emerged from the opposition’s group. Even in the dimness, they could still feel the cold aura exuding from his slender figure. He aimed his gaze at Gu Yan and scoffed, “Gu Yan, I can’t believe you dared to come.”
Gu Yan’s eyes were sharp and filled with fury as he locked gazes with the man a few meters away from him, wishing he could pierce hundreds of holes into the man with his eyes.
This twisted man had taken his daughter away, caused the death of his wife, and was now troubling Xiuchen too.
“Fu Jingyi, there’s nothing I dare not do. It’s you who has been hiding in the shadows, not daring to show your face. Now that I am here, vent out whatever complaints and hatred you might have on me and stop resorting to such despicable means that disgrace even a person.”
“Ha ha, despicable? Gu Yan, do you even have the right to utter these words? You, a person who doesn’t even know the principle of not coveting a friend’s wife, are the most despicable. Back then, if you hadn’t taken advantage of Yu Han’s temporary amnesia to deceive her, how could she have ended up becoming your wife?”
The moment Fu Jingyi’s words left his lips, the younger folks present were shocked, their eyes wide open.
Only Wen Ran managed to maintain calmness on her face, as though the past grudge between her parents and Fu Jingyi was no secret to her. Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng looked at Gu Yan in surprise.
Gu Yan’s face shifted to various shades of color before he spoke in a lowered tone, “Fu Jingyi, if you and Yu Han had been deeply in love back then, even if she had lost her memory, she would not have fallen in love with me. You only resent me for taking advantage of the situation, but I was completely unaware that the person you liked was Yu Han. If it weren’t for you, how would Yu Han have suffered from amnesia…”
The others were confused. Gu Yan’s words were almost incomprehensible. It was unclear whether the event was too long ago and he could not remember the details, or his grieves were too intense that he couldn’t articulate his thoughts.
His words struck a nerve in Fu Jingyi, his eyes flash with hurt and regret. He listened as Gu Yan continued, “The truth is, Yu Han remembered you by the time she fell in love with me. She later told me that you were the first one to betray her, and I didn’t owe you anything. Fu Jingyi, you knew exactly what you’ve done. If you truly loved Yu Han, why would you have done that with another woman…”
“You said Yu Han knew…”
Fu Jingyi’s body swayed a bit. He had thought that Yu Han would never know about that night when he was trapped.
“She didn’t hate you, she just couldn’t accept a man who had betrayed her.”
Once Gu Yan reached this point, a hint of melancholy flashed through his eyes. Some matters and people required reconciliation in order for oneself to live peacefully.
Fu Jingyi seemed to detect something from Gu Yan’s sorrowful words. After a few seconds of astonishment, he suddenly rushed over. Liao Dongxing’s men didn’t even manage to stop him in time, they just held Wen Ran tighter and shouted in a deep voice, “Mo Xiuchen, Wen Ran is here. Bring all the evidence here.”
“Alright!”
Jiang Liu agreed, but didn’t step forward himself. Instead, he handed over the envelope of documents to Qin Mu. Qin Mu tightened his lips and with each step, advanced towards Wen Ran.
Even though it was just a few metres away, Liao Dongxing still didn’t understand why Qin Mu was holding the evidence when he was just a few steps away. He stood there and demanded, “Liao Dongxing, let your men release Wen Ran.”
At a glance from Liao Dongxing, his subordinate brought Wen Ran forward. As Qin Mu handed over the documents with one hand, and extended his other hand to grab Wen Ran, suddenly, there was the shrill sound of a police siren from down the mountain. At the sound, Liao Dongxing’s face turned pale. Just as Qin Mu was about to bring Wen Ran over to his side, he quickly stepped forward and pulled Wen Ran towards the cliff which was two metres away.
