Gamers Are Fierce - Chapter 60
Chapter 60: Steel Rod
Li Ang put the corpse and the black umbrella containing Chai Cuiqiao into his inventory. After scanning the scene and confirming that there was no evidence that could expose his identity, he sprinted out of the shantytown. Then, he swiftly removed the nightwear, revealing the white short-sleeved shirt and black shorts underneath.
He put on a helmet, pulled down the face shield, and picked up the backpack once more. After boarding the bicycle and pasting a reflective sticker on the left side of the handle, he lazily rode the bicycle out of the shadows behind the shantytown.
He passed by a no-surveillance zone before openly riding down the road like an ordinary riding enthusiast.
Quite a few cars were parked along the side of the road. Many car owners alighted their vehicles, carrying their cell phones and pointing them in the direction of the shantytown. The dark clouds, thunder, and the occasional sound of buildings collapsing attracted a lot of attention.
Li Ang mimicked everyone’s actions. He stopped riding and looked curiously at the shantytown. However, he was surveying the area out of the corner of his eye.
A triangle-shaped paper plane was flying in mid-air. It was made of ordinary A4 paper that had been folded haphazardly.
No one present took notice of this paper plane. Out of the corner of his eye, Li Ang noticed that the paper plane was flying in a manner inconsistent with aerodynamics, for it was speeding toward the shantytown.
Its speed was at least 70 miles per hour…
Li Ang retracted his gaze. Several seconds later, a dozen pitch-black armored military tanks sped over. The thick off-road-pattern, anti-explosive wheels skidded on the road into the puddles of water, creating a mist of moonlight.
The armored tanks were three meters tall, equipped with an anti-explosive launcher, a camera-monitoring image transmission system, and a floodlight system, and could defend against attacks from ordinary firearms. The tanks were also equipped with numerous firing ports to ensure that the people within could retaliate.
There were two lines of motorcycles behind the armored tanks, while a three-armed helicopter with a huge searchlight was flying in the air.
The appearance of military vehicles was a very rare sight in Yin City. The gossiping car owners looked shocked as they quickly put away their cell phones and drove in the opposite direction of the shantytown.
Li Ang blended in with these cars. A police barrier was erected on the road a short distance away, placed there specifically to check the passing vehicles and their owners’ identities. The video recording found on each vehicle was confiscated.
It was such a fast reaction…
Li Ang pulled the face shield down, tilted the bicycle’s handle, and rode along the slope by the river. He squatted down in the bushes on the slope, put the bicycle in the backpack, and removed his helmet. Then, he put on earphones and pretended to be a jogger who liked running during the night as he jogged along the stone path by the river.
After avoiding the police barrier, Li Ang made multiple turns in the no-surveillance zone and returned to the district he was living in. He climbed the wall to reach his balcony and entered his flat through the window.
Once he was home, he immediately checked and confirmed that no one had knocked on his door, turned the door handle, and opened the windows. He could finally let out a sigh of relief. Then, he put away the phone he had placed in front of the front door, changed into his pajamas, and lay on the bed.
A few minutes later, someone knocked on his anti-burglary door. He saw two young policemen standing outside when he opened it.
“Yes?” Li Ang, who was wearing blue pajamas, asked blearily with a yawn.
“Erm… It’s nothing,” the policemen replied. “Go back to sleep.”
Li Ang closed the door, lay back down on his bed, and continued to contemplate.
The Special Affairs Bureau’s reaction was actually not slow. Five minutes had passed ever since the call, and the emergency contingency plan had been carried out. Armored vehicles, helicopters, and a player supported by the state through the use of a paper plane had been dispatched.
The Special Affairs Bureau most likely had a special team that was in charge of each city and district. However, this reaction speed was still insufficient when dealing with supernatural beings that possessed high agility and great power. Very few players had the state’s support after all. Because they were scattered across the country, the numbers available would decrease drastically.
This was also why the Special Affairs Bureau had always been trying to recruit more players.
Li Ang closed his eyes and started to check the quest rewards.
[Quest Reward 1: Additional 200 EXP]
[Player’s Overall Performance: S+, Game Credits and EXP obtained increased by 160%]
The 200 EXP gained for killing Zou Zhengze and the additional quest reward of 200 EXP were multiplied by the 160% factor provided by the quest evaluation, giving him a total of 640 EXP.
His current EXP bar was at Level 4, 392/400. Upon completing this quest, he leveled up to Level 6 and his EXP bar reached 132/600.
The system did not specify Zou Zhengze’s level, but one could guess that his level was roughly higher than the level of Xing Hechou, whom Li Ang had encountered during the Solitary Temple quest, and similar to the level of the mandrill.
The mandrill had been successfully killed thanks to the combined efforts of several players. On the other hand, Li Ang and Chai Cuiqiao had killed Zou Zhengze together, a feat made possible by the Ripple Breathing Technique, which could specifically repress Yin Qi.
“Normally, the quest should be completed by watching as Zou Zhengze devours the souls of the residents of the shantytown. Then, the player will help from the sidelines after the state player of the Special Affairs Bureau arrives.
“This method, however, will naturally make the quest rank drop. The state player will also receive some credit, causing the original player to gain a significantly smaller amount of EXP.
“Is the system encouraging players to kill one another?”
Li Ang scratched his head. He confirmed that he wanted to level up but did not make any moves to add points to his Stats.
[Quest Reward 2: 400 Game Credits]
400 Game Credits multiplied by the 160% quest rank modulus equaled 640 Game Credits.
Before this quest, Li Ang had already accumulated 2,020 Game Credits. By adding the 640 Game Credits he had earned to this amount, he could browse through the lowest-grade items in the game shop.
There was a specific thread for black market trading on the player forum. Most posts were about trading equipment and items for Game Credits, while some trades required exchanging goods. Some wealthy players even spent millions of dollars to look for suitable skills.
How could one become strong without spending money?
Black market trading was indeed very popular, but one could not buy rare-grade items there. The equipment that was even more valuable and powerful could only be found and purchased in the shop.
The Killing Field game had just begun, and there was a severe lack of good equipment. The various organizations were trying their best to collect it. Once any player put a powerful item up for sale, affluent and domineering organizations would sweep the item up.
The items that appeared on the market were mostly inferior and unwanted.
Li Ang even suspected that some of the people on the forum constantly offering high prices to purchase equipment, items, and skills were the sellers themselves, aiming to mark the prices up. The others on the forum were people from state organizations, including the Special Affairs Bureau…
[Quest Reward 3: Random Grade Item*1]
Unlike the previous quests, the quest reward this time was a Random Grade item. Any items that were not Incomplete or Normal Grade would be good.
The system was rarely so kind. The time to reveal the item had come!
Li Ang took a deep breath. Open!
There was a flare before a thick gold rolling pin with a tip covered in gold stars appeared.
[Name: Steel Rod]
[Category: Arms]
[Grade: Normal]
[Attack Power: Medium]
[Effects: It’s extremely sturdy]
[Equipment Requirements: Strength more than or equal to 8]
[Remarks: This rod once belonged to a famous pastry chef who made the world’s first golden-ratio wheat dumplings.]
Li Ang fell silent for a short while before complaining. “Why is it called Steel Rod? What kind of name is this?
“Also, this belonged to the yellow-haired, scar-faced pastry chef who loved to walk around shirtless. This is evidently a rolling pin! Is it alright to use kitchenware as a murder weapon?”
Despite the complaints, this thick steel rod was truly not bad. Its material was nothing special, but since the system described it was “extremely sturdy”, it should not be that bad.
When used with silver ripple scampering, this rolling pin could maybe be considered a sharp murderous weapon.
