Freya was stunned. She quickly recalled she had genuinely hung up on a call earlier.
She hurriedly explained. “I didn’t know it was you calling.”
“So what?” Gideon’s anger did not dissipate when he heard her explanation.
Freya lowered her voice. “Mr. Carter, I am sorry. No one has given me your number before. As your employee, I think it is unprofessional to answer personal calls during office hours, so I hung up.”
The moment she finished her sentence, she could hear something falling on the ground.
Freya furtively glanced over and saw the man had thrown a pen.
Hmm? Was he angry again?
Freya said nothing. Her strategy whenever the man got angry was the silent treatment.
The moment she opened her mouth, the man would get even angrier no matter what she said.
She saw Gideon standing up from the chair and walking towards her step by step through the corner of her eye.
Freya did not know what he wanted, so she stood where she was obediently.
The man stopped when he was five centimeters away and he was extremely close to her.
“I heard your foster father killed someone in a fit of anger when he found out his wife was having an affair and your foster mother felt too embarrassed, so she disappeared.”
Gideon’s voice and eyes were dripping with disdain.
There was even a mocking smile on his face.
Freya bit her lip without saying a word as she listened to the man pour salt on an open wound.
Gideon raised his hand and touched her forehead before moving it down slowly. When it reached her chin, he grabbed it tightly and laughed as he said sarcastically, “I am curious. How did my father choose someone from a family like yours to become his daughter-in-law?”
Freya kept staring at the man. Her eyes were filled with resentment for this cruel treatment.
She raised her hand and attempted to pull his hand aside.
Gideon tightened his grip on her chin. He narrowed his eyes and looked at her threateningly. “If you want me to come along and visit your grandmother at the old folks’ home, you have to tell me the truth.”
The anger in Freya’s eyes finally turned milder when she heard the offer.
She blinked and looked at him calmly, “Mr. Carter, let go of me first if you want me to tell you.”
Gideon glared at her before pulling his hand back in disgust.
Freya raised her hand and rubbed her sore chin before she said nonchalantly, “I did not want to marry you at all.”
Gideon’s eyes were filled with surprise on hearing this.
No woman could say no to being Gideon’s wife in Ocean City. Every woman had a crush on him and was head over heels in love with him.
How could she say she was not interested in marrying him?
She was clearly lying!
Freya veered her eyes away and said mildly, “I came to know Uncle Charles when he had a heart attack. Since my father suffered from the same problems, I used what I knew to help him. Uncle Charles wanted to thank me, so he gave me a name card and told me to call if ever I needed his help, no matter what it was.”
Freya’s voice suddenly went softer. “After I met with some family problems, I needed a lawyer to fight my father’s case. I didn’t want to trouble Uncle Charles, but I was desperate, so I called him. Then, he unexpectedly told me to marry you in return.”
Gideon laughed mockingly. Freya could sense his disdain just from the tone.
“Is that how you rose through the ranks in one move? Is that how a foster daughter of a poor family became Mrs. Carter?”
