Chapter 28: Crimson Swaddling Clothes
Retracting his arm, He Mu glanced at the red mark on his fist and had some vague enlightenment.
Combat experience was something that could only be gained through constant fighting. There were no shortcuts.
Because combat experience didn’t only include combat techniques and strategies, but also include the acknowledgment of one’s strength.
For instance, even though he had 50 combat power, he would subconsciously dodge if one charged over with a kitchen knife.
Because subconsciously, he feared the kitchen knife. Even if he could easily knock it away, he couldn’t escape that layer of psychological fear.
On the other hand, constant fighting could gradually eliminate this subconscious and let one explore one’s true limits.
For instance, that punch earlier.
A few more punches like that, and he might dare to use his fists to fight everything head-on.
That was combat experience.
…
The three Wei siblings muttered at the side, and He Mu didn’t listen to them. When he finished summing up in his mind, not far away, three Special Operations Unit members rushed over.
“Where are the deceased?”
“Inside.” Wei Lan pointed to the second floor of a building next to her and said somewhat sadly.
Hearing this, the three Special Operations Unit members immediately carried the stretcher into the building, while He Mu and the three Wei siblings followed behind.
By the time He Mu reached the door of the house, two Special Operations Unit members were already carrying the stretcher out.
There was a corpse on the stretcher, covered with a white cloth that was stained red.
Seeing this scene, He Mu’s heart suddenly became heavy.
He walked into the house. In addition to a large puddle of blood at the door, there was a trail of blood that extended in the direction of the bedroom.
Following the blood trail, He Mu came to the bedroom.
This family’s safe room was within the bedroom. Judging from the blood trail, it was apparent that one was injured, and had struggled to enter the safe room.
This stirred He Mu’s emotions, and he blurted out: “Is there anyone inside that can still be saved?”
A sigh came from one of the Special Operations Unit members in the safe room.
“Sigh, you can see for yourself.”
He Mu was slightly stunned. Then, he walked into the safe room.
The Special Operations Unit members inside the safe room raised the lights, and the originally dark safe room lit up brightly.
Seeing the scene inside, He Mu’s pupils contracted, and his breathing unconsciously became rapid.
There was a young woman inside, leaning against the edge of the safe room. Shad a large opening in her stomach. She was surrounded by blood, and in her arms were swaddling clothes stained red with blood. A baby was in it, sleeping soundly.
“She…”
He Mu pointed at the young woman and subconsciously wanted to ask if she could still be rescued.
At that moment, Wei Lan’s voice came from behind.
“When I came, she was already dead from losing too much blood.”
…
Hearing this, He Mu let out a deep breath and looked at the baby with a sympathetic gaze.
At this moment, the baby didn’t know that it had already become an orphan.
“Get the baby out. She’s hugging it tight.”
One of the Special Operations Unit members said in a soft voice.
“Okay.”
He Mu answered and went up to help.
Just as he was about to pluck the woman’s arm, the cell phone in the woman’s hand caught his attention.
Because the phone screen was still on…
He Mu used a little force and held the phone in his hand.
At that moment, the phone screen showed a memo page with some misspelled words.
“The baby has vitamin D deficiency, the doctor said to get more sunlight.”
…
“He only loves to drink XXX brand of formula, like those in the house.”
…
“The baby is somewhat allergic to rubber.”
…
Thereafter, the sentences became even more messy. He Mu could imagine that by the time she took out her phone to type these words, the woman was already extremely weak and her consciousness was very fuzzy.
But at the end, she still typed out a sentence clearly.
…
“We don’t want the house anymore. The bankbook is on the bedside table. The baby has no other relatives. Please find a good home for him. I thank you sincerely.”
…
Seeing this, He Mu felt his heart getting heavily hammered. His throat seemed to be choked by something.
At that moment, he realized what emergency missions really meant.
It wasn’t what he thought at first; punishing the murderer, killing the monster, earning money, and gaining city contribution value and psychological satisfaction.
What each emergency mission really meant was probably human tragedy.
And having witnessed the tragedy with his own eyes, he realized that seeing the misery of his own kind brought him a sense of sadness that mission rewards couldn’t erase in any way.
He somewhat didn’t want to hear that urgent mission prompt again.
“Phew…”
Exhaling another breath, He Mu backed out of the memo page.
The wallpaper of the phone was a photo of a family of three. The man in his twenties looked simple and honest, and the woman also smiled brightly. And between them was the baby, who was now sleeping soundly in swaddling clothes. The baby was being held to sit up, pouting mouth and showing a face of reluctance.
He Mu couldn’t bear to look at this wallpaper again, and hurriedly clicked on the call log.
The call log showed that the police call was made 20 minutes ago, which meant that at most 20 minutes had passed since the Scythe Weasel raided.
In just 20 minutes, the fate of a family was completely changed.
Ordinary people were just so fragile.
“Is there any important information in the phone?”
Wei Lan asked.
“Read it yourself, the memo contains this woman’s last words.”
He Mu’s voice was hoarse as he put the phone into Wei Lan’s hand.
Wei Lan looked at it for a while, and not long after, the sound of a video rang out from the phone.
It was apparent that Wei Lan opened something that shouldn’t be opened, such as… the gallery.
“Look! This is my precious baby! Two months old today!”
“Baby, tell mommy if you love daddy more or…”
…
As if the baby heard the voice of the mother, the baby woke up and reached out to the woman above who had lost her life. The corners of the baby’s mouth grinned and let out a “giggle”.
“There’s no need for that.”
He Mu couldn’t stand it anymore. He took the phone from Wei Lan’s hand and closed the video inside.
One of the Special Operations Unit members took the baby from the woman’s arms.
Boo-hoo…
In an instant, the cries were loud and clear.
Wei Lan looked at the crying baby and spoke with difficulty.
“I-I… should have come over a little earlier. If I had been a little earlier, she might not have died… Now this child is an orphan like me.”
After saying these words, she turned around and headed out.
A few moments later, outside came the sound of Wei Lan crying loudly, sounding especially clear in the silence of the dark night.
He Mu sighed inwardly.
This world forced some people to act cold on the outside, while staying warm-hearted on the inside.
For instance, someone like Wei Lan.
Those profanities she blurted out, her carefree actions, as well as the tattoo on the neck, was just a protective color disguised because of insecurity.
When Uncle Li said that the three Wei siblings were reliable, He Mu believed it.
Because of that, he had never been furious because of some of Wei Lan’s remarks and actions.
…
A few moments later, the crying stopped and the stretcher was brought up again.
Seeing that the Special Operations Unit members were about to carry the child away, He Mu asked softly: “Excuse me, what are you going to do with this baby?”
“Send him to an orphanage. If someone adopts him, he will have a new home.”
“What if there isn’t?”
“The state will raise him to adulthood.”
