The pair froze instantly and turned around in unison. Standing with their heads lowered, they waited for the expected scolding.
“Well, have both Mrs. Lu and Young Master Lu lost their voices?”
Subconsciously, Lu Xingguang inched closer to Yan Susu.
Feeling the child’s need for support, Yan Susu suppressed her own fear and stuck her chin out, saying, “I made him eat out with me. He had no choice but to come with me.”
Lu Xingguang just kept nodding in agreement.
He had no choice? Other people might not understand his son, but wouldn’t he know all about this little rascal’s antics?
Crossing his arms, Lu Zhanxiu just looked at them through narrowed eyes, saying nothing.
Shaking under his father’s icy glare, Lu Xingguang pursed his lips, saying reluctantly, “Iceberg, I was wrong…”
Raising his eyebrows, Lu Zhanxiu remarked, “It would appear that Young Master Lu’s memory is failing. We should do something about that.”
At that, he rose…
Lu Xingguang immediately exclaimed loudly, “You can’t hit me, that’s child abuse. I will tell Grandpa and Grandma!”
Oblivious to his son’s threats, Lu Zhanxiu kept walking towards him, looking menacing.
Although she too was terrified of him, Yan Susu could no longer just stand by and do nothing. Holding Lu Xingguang tightly in her arms, she said, “He’s just a kid. You cannot use physical force on him!”
Noting the little woman’s willful stance and her protectiveness of his son, Lu Zhanxiu’s eyebrows twitched slightly. Did he look like someone who would hit a child?
“You…Don’t come any closer…” Watching as Lu Zhanxiu moved purposefully towards them, Yan Susu retreated slowly, holding the little boy tightly in her arms.
Snuggled against her pleasant-smelling body, Lu Xingguang’s thoughts got side-tracked. He resolved never to be rude to her again since she had opted to protect him despite being terrified herself.
Noticing that Yan Susu was backing towards the stairs and concerned that she might trip, Lu Zhanxiu took one step forward and reached out, wrapping the pair of them, the adult and the little one, in his arms.
Wide-eyed, Yan Susu simply looked at him, scared out of her wits and not daring even to breathe deeply.
As he looked into those big, dewy eyes, which were staring at him like a terrified deer, Lu Zhanxiu felt unexplainably happy. He asked, in his unimaginably charming voice, “Just go on hiding, will you?”
“I…I messed up. If you want to hit someone, just hit me. He has nothing to do with this.”
This young woman, obviously terrified, was willing to risk her own life to protect that little rascal. It appeared that she was really fond of the boy.
“Mrs. Lu, does your husband look like someone who would hit a woman?”
Yan Susu wanted badly to nod but the sardonic look on Lu Zhanxiu’s face seemed to be daring her. “Try saying yes and see what happens!”
She chose to surrender and, swallowing hard, went against her conscience to shake her head instead. “No.”
“So, what is Mrs. Lu scared of then?”
“I…I’m not scared.”
“If not, why is Mrs. Lu shaking, huh?” Lu Zhanxiu spoke quietly, his voice a little hoarse, causing her heart to flutter wildly.
Feeling spineless, Yan Susu turned to look away and replied, “I’m not shaking.”
“Really?” Lu Zhanxiu laughed softly and inched closer to her, “Let’s check it out, then.”
At that moment, Lu Xingguang, who had been sandwiched between them, suddenly clutched at his stomach. He moaned softly, “My tummy hurts…”
Lu Zhanxiu released Yan Susu and lowered his head. He could see that Lu Xingguang looked very pale, with big beads of sweat streaming down his face as he clutched at his stomach. It was obvious that he was not well and in pain.
His eyes darkened as he picked Lu Xingguang up and instructed sternly, “Quick, call Fu Zhengshi!”
Confused by the sudden turn of events, Yan Susu followed him, asking frantically, “What’s wrong with him?”
Laying his son on the bed, Lu Zhanxiu gave her a glance and asked in a mild tone, “What did he have to eat tonight?”
“A kid’s meal at McDonald’s, grilled stuff, fishballs…” Yan Susu rattled off a list of the things that they had eaten. She had eaten everything he had, so the problem could not have been the food.
As he listened, Lu Zhanxiu’s face became more and more thunderous until it eventually turned to ice.
