“The wound is deeper than I thought, so I need to sew it. I also need to disinfect it first, but it might sting a little.”
“I’ll bear it.”
Captain Felix, who was talking to Captain Reward next to her, disappeared at some point.
Now, Yernia lifted the sterile cotton and wiped her wound gently.
“The Major asked me to say hello.”
Yernia’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Cassian?”
She raised her head as her husband’s name caught her attention.
However, she felt a bit awkward.
Captain Reward might think she had reacted quickly as if she had anticipated the news for too long.
However, she only looked down at Yernia with eyes that seemed to know that she cared about him.
“Yes, the major told me that you don’t have to worry about him because he’s doing well. He also said that he wanted to see you even just for a moment today.”
“Today? Are you saying he would visit me today?”
Yernia saw Cassian every day so it made sense that she would miss him so much because she hadn’t seen him for a week.
Whenever Yernia confirmed that she was different from before, it felt like she didn’t know who she was anymore.
“The battle is not over yet, so he can’t come all the way here. However, if you go to the forest in the western direction at sunset, you can meet him there.”
The western forest was where Yernia and Cassian took a walk and made their own snowmen.
He seemed to have a moment’s time and Yernia felt very excited.
The sun was still bright and she had no idea when she should start going to the forest.
“Thank you for the message.”
However, Yernia didn’t notice Captain Reward’s cold expression.
***
“Captain Felix? He went out with Anna earlier.”
Yernia waited the whole time for the sun to set.
And, when the sky had turned orange and she looked for Captain Felix to go see Cassian, the unhelpful man wasn’t around.
It had been a while since Habin’s assault had passed and no one had been targeting Yernia lately, so she was able to have a peaceful daily life.
That must have eased Captain Felix’s guard on her as well
“When he comes, please tell Captain Felix that I’m going to meet Major Ricardo outside.”
Yernia told a fellow nurse and took off her apron.
Before going out, she didn’t forget to borrow a hand mirror from someone to look at her face.
There was nothing particularly different from the usual.
She also didn’t have a lot of patients to care for these days, so she wasn’t that tired.
“Should I tie my hair or should I untie it?”
“Both of them are fine but it’s prettier if you choose what to do about it yourself.”
“Thank you!”
Yernia chose to let her hair down.
When she pulled down her hair tie, her silky locks came down in waves.
After roughly arranging her hair by hand, Yernia quickly ran to the forest.
“Where are you going?”
Treating the soldier she encountered several times in the barracks as an acquaintance, she pointed to the western forest.
“I’m going to meet Cassian.”
“Oh, you must be happy.”
“No. He’s just going to report to me that he’s alive.”
As she rushed out of there, Yernia didn’t notice that she was smiling the whole time.
No one in the western forest must have ran like that.
Should she go deeper into the forest?
However, no matter how much she walked and walked, she couldn’t find him.
“Cassian? Where are you?”
It felt like there was no one here.
Only the sound of her footsteps treading on the snowy ground interrupted the eerie silence.
“Are you kidding me? Where are you hiding, Cassian?”
Nobody answered and only Yernia’s voice echoed back.
Cassian was pretty playful.
He refrained it a little these days but Yernia thought people didn’t change all at once.
It was obvious that he wanted to play hide-and-seek.
“Cassian. Where are you? I’m scared.”
However, no matter how much she looked for him, she couldn’t see Cassian, and the darkness was already covering the forest like a tent.
Yernia got lost.
She forgot where she came in.
Fortunately, the snow wasn’t cold enough to make her shiver because she was wearing the fur coat that Cassian had given her.
“What should I do?”
By this time, Yernia also realized that Cassian wasn’t playing around.
No matter how mischievous he was, he wouldn’t hide from Yernia until it was this dark just to tease her.
Cassian wasn’t that.
“It’s all right. Let’s just go back.”
She had no idea what this was all about, but returning to the barracks was her top priority.
It was night.
The monster hadn’t shown up here yet, but it might come out of nowhere.
The demon could appear anytime and anywhere and the thought rattled her.
Cassian asked Captain Reward to tell her to meet him.
But why didn’t Cassian come?
Did something urgent happen?
It was possible.
If the situation was that urgent, he could have forgotten her for a moment.
After a long walk, there was no way out.
Yernia came to a standstill.
It was where she came from a while ago.
Going in circles in an unfamiliar place didn’t feel good.
Before she knew it, the snow came into her boots and made her feet cold.
Her feet were frozen and her whole body trembled.
When she felt a heavy presence behind her at that moment, Yernia turned around.
She thought it was a person but what Yernia saw in front of her wasn’t.
“Monster?”
