I Became the Monster’s Bride - Chapter 154
No Matter What You Look Like (3)
Then, he stared at Roelin once again. She didn’t look like she avoided his gaze this time, but she was still keeping her distance.
It meant that she was all ready for the conversation at that moment.
She, too, took a deep breath before she started clenching her fingertips as she prepared to listen to him.
“They call me a monster. All over in Rakain as well as the other countries within the Cesan continent.”
Kergel smiled bitterly and recalled all the other people’s evaluations of him. Soon after, Roelin’s blue eyes quivered.
“That’s…”
As soon as she tried opening her mouth to respond with something, Kergel had continued first.
“I can’t really say that it’s completely wrong. They may have said it without knowing about anything, but I actually have the blood of a wolf flowing through my entire body. I’m not a complete human being. And these golden eyes of mine are proof of that.”
He pointed at himself in the eye. Roelin stuttered in a confused tone as if she had heard something that was completely unexpected.
“Well, I heard that golden eyes are one of the characteristics of Seroif’s Royal Family…”
Her eyes instantly opened wide. And Roelin couldn’t finish speaking up before she soon became quiet.
She remembered the books that she had encountered back in the Imperial Library. There were references to wolves in the early history of the Empire as well as the story of wolves in the mythology of Cainbert himself. In fact, there were many wolves that could be seen in many of the ancient paintings too.
……and during the last time when they had gone out of the Palace together.
She recalled him acting like a wolf on the day when such heavy rain had suddenly fallen. So, it was not an illusion at all to what she had felt back then……
“Cainbert was a werewolf himself.”
Kergel saw that Roelin’s blue eyes were trembling several times before he opened his mouth again.
“Werewolves looked just like humans, but they had the power that humans could never possess. Nothing in this world was a force so strong that it could actually compete with the wolves.”
His low voice reverberated over the lake just like the wind. Nevertheless, no one could hear it since there was no one here except for the two of them.
She had been the only one who was listening to that man right now.
Roelin’s lips trembled when she realized it once again. He never stopped talking even when he saw that she was being agitated. Furthermore, he just couldn’t hide it any longer, so it was now the time to tell it all.
Even if she were to turn away from him after hearing all this talk.
Kergel continued while suppressing the throbbing pain in his chest.
“It was such a terrifying force that I could use to destroy the world in its entirety.”
“……”
“But the Werewolves were not greedy at all. They didn’t even bother to use that power since they wanted to coexist with the other life forms. However… it was actually Cainbert who changed the entire situation. He had fallen in love with a human woman.”
People never let them, the two lovers, stood still at any cost. Those greedy ones who were around them craved the great power of the Werewolves and coveted even much more through them as well.
Many Werewolves were all sacrificed during that said process. Thus, Cainbert eventually ended up sealing his powers in response.
Since then, all of those who had inherited his blood were born with the sealed power of the Werewolves instead. All they had left was the power to turn into a wolf—and that was just all.
“Therefore, all of those founding myths which you’ve read in the books are, in fact, lies. Since the most important story is truly hidden after all.”
Kergel jokingly added as he finished his sentence. Nevertheless, Roelin couldn’t even flash a single smile.
It was too big of a secret for her to handle, so everything had just been rather excessive to put her head around.
Descendants of the Werewolves.
This man had actually descended from the Werewolves themselves?
The cry of those wolves that could be heard during the companion ceremony lingered in her ears. She closed her hands several times before she finally opened her mouth, albeit slowly.
“Then, you’ve had your strength sealed as well? The way you’ve changed……”
“I simply revealed some of my power to find you. It was just up to the point where the seal wouldn’t sever enough. Well, it was still a close call.”
As an answer to her question, Kergel pulled back his coat. Roelin was startled by his sudden action and tried to turn her eyes away. But even before she could do that, his words continued.
“This is actually the seal.”
She thought that it was just like a tattoo, but he pointed to it and said that it had been the seal itself. Roelin began to stare with her trembling eyes at what was embedded in Kergel’s left chest. It was utterly similar to a red jewel.
Should she say that it appeared like a blood-colored jewel that felt rather dangerous instead?
“The power to rule over not only wolves but the other beasts as well. The power that could overturn the sky and cut beyond the earth. That kind of power is actually asleep in this seal.”
“……”
Roelin listened to Kergel’s explanation and kept her gaze at the seal for a long time before she finally lifted her eyes and looked at him. Then, Kergel continued as if he had noticed what she was actually trying to say.
“You don’t have to worry at all. This seal won’t break apart that easily.”
This time, of course, was a rather close call. Since he had exerted all of his strength in order to find Roelin. If he had just used a little more force there, the seal would have definitely been broken.
But Kergel didn’t bother to say that at all. Although he decided to tell Roelin everything, he never wanted to make her worry if she were to ever realize this.
