I Became the Monster’s Bride - Chapter 159
No Matter What You Look Like (8)
The Knights Commander, who had left the Palace and went to the Samalta Mountains in order to examine the site more closely for a better understanding of the situation, seemed to have finally returned.
“My greetings to Your Royal Highness.”
“Hurry up and come over here. And you—may go now.”
Lenoff hurriedly called out to the Knights Commander, who was showing his courtesy, and issued a complementary order to the henchman from before—who had been bowing his head until then.
Lenoff’s pair of blue eyes that were looking at his henchman had been utterly chilling. As the man had failed the given task, he would not be reappointed once more. No matter how much of the dirty work that he had already done under Lenoff’s orders so far in the first place anyway.
The henchman’s expression when he finally realized it all soon became distorted. However, there was no other way for him to protest at all. So, the henchman had no other choice but to only follow Lenoff’s last order with his shoulders all sagging down.
As soon as the henchman went out through the door, Lenoff’s cold voice continued once again.
“I believe that the previous henchman’s treatment will be handled very neatly by Grandfather then.”
“Of course, it won’t get on your nerves in any way.”
The Duke of Deberton answered Lenoff’s words while stroking down his white beard. It was to put an end to a person’s life, but none of the three people who had been there felt disturbed at all.
There was no need to give any meaning in disposing of such useless items anyway.
“By the way, how was the whole scene? There must have been a sign on our side, right?”
“Yes, Your Highness, there was nothing like that. It’s just…”
“……?”
Lenoff looked puzzled at the Knights Commander’s words. Then, the Knights Commander continued again with a slightly troubled expression this time.
“You may not believe it since it could be seen as such an absurd story…”
“That is just a judgment of yours.”
The Duke of Deberton intervened when the Knights Commander hesitated as he wasn’t able to speak up easily. The Knights Commander soon nodded to the Duke’s words and slowly opened his mouth in response.
“We heard a rather strange story while we were going to the scene to have a look at it.”
“……what kind of a strange story?”
“Those who had been living in the villages near the mountain range and the herbalists as well, all of them said some similar things. On that day…… they heard that the King of Beasts had made an appearance there.”
“The King of Beasts?”
Lenoff’s eyebrow curled upwards. His expression also turned slightly wrinkled as if he had heard some strange words indeed. The Knights Commander glanced at the Duke like he was asking if he should still continue.
However, the Duke of Deberton blinked as if he implored him to keep on talking. Then, the Knights Commander faintly sighed before he finally proceeded.
“But one of the knights whom I had taken there brought up a strange story as well.”
Should he actually be saying this, the Knights Commander slowly added with his lips twitched as if he was actually agonizing over something else.
“It was just like a trace of an ancient werewolf?”
“What?”
This time, even the Duke of Deberton had no other choice but to crumple his own expression. It was due to the fact that he finally heard a story that had been completely unexpected.
* * *
“My greetings to Your Majesty, the King. I am Hilken Debian…”
“Yes, Sir Debian, let’s just hear your story then. I’d like to hear again what you had said to the Chief of the Knights.”
Lenoff interrupted the new knight and opened his mouth at once. Then, the new knight, Hilken, stuttered before he began to talk again.
“Yeah, look—I mean…… where should I start?”
“The Ancient Wolves.”
Lenoff spoke dryly to Hilken, who was clearly being all hesitant.
“You can just talk about the Ancient Wolves first. It seems that Sir Debian’s family has some records that are apparently related to the Wolves?”
Lenoff recalled what he had just heard through the Knights Commander and asked once again to verify it all. Then, Hilken gave a nod and answered his question.
“Yes, there was definitely a record of such articles within the documents that had been passed down from our predecessors. One of our predecessors was very interested in the people of the Suin tribe……”
“Just get to the point.”
Lenoff frowned and opened his mouth again as Hilken’s words were about to sound unnecessarily long. Hilken recoiled from the King’s warning and briefly replied in return.
“There is a record that the blood of the Ancient Wolves flows through the Imperial Family of Seroif.”
“……what?”
“So the Emperor of Seroif is said to possess such great power that descended through the blood of the Wolves themselves. And when that power were to be exerted, it is said that his appearance also changes close to those of the werewolves……”
“……the King of Beasts had appeared.”
Lenoff narrowed his eyes and muttered in a low voice. It was a prompt of what the Knights Commander had just said earlier anyway.
It was just a bunch of clueless crap……
“Did the Emperor intervene in the process of rescuing the girl?”
“Yes, Your Highness. I received a report that the Emperor of Seroif had immediately headed there right after he overthrew the monster. And I also confirmed that he had accompanied the Empress on their way back to Seroif as well.”
“……I mean—”
It was the Emperor of Seroif who had destroyed all these plans. Werewolves. They had inherited the blood of the beast……
“The word ‘monster’ was not just a groundless rumor it seems.”
Lenoff smiled while muttering to himself and looked back at the Duke. The Duke also looked astonished and nodded in response.
“If this whole story is true, it’s really…… Hah, I don’t even know what to say anymore.”
“But why was it so hard to find the records related to the Ancient Werewolves anyway? A man who was not even human had lived in such a dignified manner as the Emperor of the Empire itself.”
“I think it was long forgotten in everyone’s memory since the power had already been sealed a long time ago.”
“The power is sealed? So, what’s going on this time? Didn’t all the assassins drop dead due to the powerful force in the first place?”
Lenoff shook his head at Hilken’s words and asked those questions as if he could not really comprehend them all.
