Chapter 17: A Beautiful Morning

Mike’s perspective
When I woke up in the morning, I was in a daze. When I saw Melanda and Millie in the hospital bed, I understood that I was in the hospital. I got up and touched Millie’s forehead. It still felt a little warm, so I took the thermometer to make sure that her fever had completely subsided.
I slowly put the thermometer in Millie’s mouth and waited. I watched them both with a heavy heart. How could that bastard make such a beautiful girl sad and leave? How could he use her and dump her like that?
I pushed back the hair that was covering Melanda’s face and looked at her. She had really grown into a beautiful woman. I admired the courage and strength she had when she herself was just a child.
She was an extraordinary girl. Any man would be lucky to have her. The thought of another man touching her and kissing her made me go crazy. I’d never really told anyone how I felt about this girl. I was afraid she wouldn’t feel the same way about me. That was why I pretended I was her brother. But no brother would look at her the way I looked at her when no one was looking. I’d loved her for so long, and I’d never loved any woman as deeply as I loved her.
But when she told me about this man, the father of her child, and her love for him, it broke my heart. How I wished that person was me. Her feelings were so strong. I could see it in her eyes and in her voice.
When the thermometer beeped, my memory was cut off. I checked Millie’s temperature and found that she was still a little feverish. Then Melanda woke up from her sleep and opened her eyes. She smiled at me sweetly.
I really stopped breathing. Her smile always mesmerized me. I smiled back at her, too, and then slowly woke Millie up so she could take her medicine.
“Thanks, Mike. Why don’t you go back to sleep? I’ll take care of her now. What time is it, by the way?” she asked blankly. She sounded tired and sleepy.
“It’s four in the morning, baby. I’m fine. I slept for a few hours. Go back to sleep,” I told her. I reached for Millie’s little hand and kissed it. What was going on with these two girls? I couldn’t seem to stop myself from kissing them.
“I’m fine. I slept longer than you. You must be tired. Please lie down and sleep,” she pleaded. I was glad she cared about me.
“Okay, okay, but can I sleep with you and Millie? My back hurts a little on the marching bed,” I lied to her. I really wanted to lie down beside them.
“Of course! I’m sorry, you should have told me sooner,” she said awkwardly. So I happily placed Millie in the middle. Melanda hugged Millie’s small body tightly so she could make more room for me on the bed.
I laid down facing them and watched as they fell asleep. I fell asleep quickly too.
When I woke up again, it was the most exciting, beautiful morning I had ever experienced. I was lying on the bed with Melanda curled up on my chest. Her head was on my shoulder, and I wrapped my arms around her.
Millie was gone. I was a little worried, but I didn’t want to move. I stared at the innocent angel sleeping in my arms, and I wanted to scream. How could I forget how I felt about her? I stroked her hair, covered her small, beautiful face, and stared at her with satisfaction.
Then I felt her moving, so I quickly closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep. She might wake up in my arms in shock, like this. I felt her stiffen, and she tried to move. I felt her try to leave, but I held her tightly and pretended to snore.
She stopped and stared at my face. Then I felt her small hand stroking my face, as if she was memorizing it. Then she touched my lips lightly. I swallowed hard and tried not to laugh. Then she sighed deeply and snuggled against my chest. I was so excited it was going to explode. I couldn’t believe it. I held her in my arms. My little Melanda was in my arms. I was so happy.
I whispered in her ear, “Good morning, honey.”
She looked up quickly and stared at me with wide eyes. She was blushing profusely, and she tried to break free from my embrace, but I hugged her tighter.
“Where do you want to go?” I asked while smiling at her. She had the most beautiful eyes in the world.
“Uh, I have to find Millie,” she said softly while biting her lip. I summoned all my willpower to stop myself from kissing those sweet pink lips.
“I think Auntie came and took Millie. Let’s just stay like this for a while. You feel so good in my arms,” I murmured to her, and tucked a hair under her ear. She was still biting that lip, as if she wanted me to take a bite.
“Baby, I’m about to lose it. Please don’t do this again,” I told her. I touched her lips and kissed her forehead for a long time, then her cute little nose and finally, her eyes.
“Let’s get up, or I might do something I shouldn’t. Good morning, gorgeous, by the way,” I told her and kissed her lightly on the lips. She blushed like a tomato and looked adorable..
