Chapter 19 It Seems Like a Date

After we got back from the hospital, Millie and I took a good shower, and Millie fell asleep quickly. I laid in bed, but my mind kept wandering back to what had happened that morning.
When I woke up, I was shocked… I was asleep in Mike’s arms! And he didn’t seem to be awake. I tried to move, but he seemed to be hugging me tighter. I gave up and enjoyed this moment. I gazed at his handsome face,
his long eyelashes, his nose, and his sculpted lips. I couldn’t help but touch his face while wishing I could imprint all of this into my heart.
But none of this belonged to me. I couldn’t help but sigh.
“Good morning, dear.”
Mike woke up. I felt more and more embarrassed and tried to break free from his arms. But he wouldn’t let go and he teased me. My face burned and I unconsciously bit my lip.
“Baby, I can’t hold it in anymore. Please don’t do this again.” I was wondering what he couldn’t hold back from when he kissed me. There was a lingering kiss on my forehead, nose, and cheeks… It was intoxicating, and
as I was waiting for him to go all the way down to my lips, he stopped. I heard myself sigh deep inside.
What did this kiss mean? What were you expecting, Melanda? He had a girlfriend. He might propose to her soon. What have you done to yourself? Do you want your heart to break again?
Wake up, silly woman. I couldn’t help but curse myself fiercely.
I didn’t want to think about any of this anymore. I forced myself to rest.
The day passed quickly and Mike did arrive in the evening. It seemed like he was already rested and he looked energetic. When I got downstairs, Mom and Millie had already had dinner.
“Baby, you looked tired, so I didn’t wake you up for dinner,” Mom told me.
“Thank you, Mom. I love you,” I told Mom gratefully.
“Mike, you haven’t had dinner yet, have you? I made your share too. Thanks for taking care of Millie last night,” Mom said to Mike.
“That’s great, Aunt Annie. I love your cooking!” Mike looked hungry.
“In that case, you guys eat. I’ll bring Millie upstairs to play.”
So Mike and I, one on each side of the dining table, sat opposite each other. Mike looked like he had a great appetite. But after what happened this morning, I couldn’t face Mike calmly. There was an awkward, strange
tmosphere. And this scene looked weird, like we were on a date.
Baby, are you okay? You look hungry,” Mike asked.
‘m fine,” I answered curtly with my emotions in turmoil.
told you, you don’t have to worry. Millie just has a cold. We’re all with you. You’re not alone anymore.”
“Thank you, Mike. It’s thanks to you this time, or I don’t know what would have happened.” Ugh, I couldn’t tell him that wasn’t what I was worried about.
“How’s your girlfriend, by the way?” I asked while looking up at him. When he was about to answer, I quickly looked down.
“We had a fight and when I woke up, she was gone,” he said while not seeming to care at all.
“Why? Is it because you didn’t come home last night? Maybe I can help you explain,” I asked him, and was surprised to find that he didn’t care at all.
“It’s okay. I think she needs to calm down. She always does unexpected things. I’m used to it,” he replied with a shrug and continued eating.
“How long have you guys been together?” I asked him curiously while ignoring my food completely. I couldn’t swallow anything. There was no point in eating.
“Two and a half years. We met in New York when | went to a seminar. She was a very ambitious model and I met her at one of their gatherings,” he said and stopped eating.
“Wow! So long? So, do you want to get married soon?” I asked while trying to summon the courage to wait for his answer.
“Ha ha, yes. I mean, I’m not young anymore, and I don’t have time to mess around anymore. Hannah keeps hinting that we should get married, and I’m thinking about it. I don’t know. We’ll see,” he replied while
watching me intently.
I grabbed the water glass and drank a full glass. I suddenly felt thirsty. The pain in my heart seemed unbearable, and I found it difficult to breathe. I smiled and nodded in silence for a moment. He was studying my face
now, and I kept looking away.
“Are you okay, Melanda?” he asked while still studying me. I nodded eagerly while trying to pretend that everything was okay. The truth was, he just stabbed that knife deeper into my heart.
“I’m fine. I’m happy for you, Mike. It’s very rare to find your soul mate and spend the rest of your life with that special person.” My voice was a little too high. Fortunately, Millie came and broke the awkward silence..
