Chapter 38: Arriving At The Underground Palace!
Professor Feisel and the others were dumbstruck as they looked at these never-before-seen sacrificial objects, such as the pile of gold and silver treasures.
They swallowed their saliva.
“The mechanism here is a set of combined mechanisms.”
Ian carefully observed the underground cave below and found that the difficulty of the traps had increased a lot.
Aika asked curiously, “What is a combination mechanism?”
“A combination mechanism is a set of complex mechanisms designed by many kinds of traps.” Ian turned his head and said to the crowd solemnly, “I can’t guarantee your safety at this level. The situation inside the ruins is much more complicated than outside.”
When the crowd heard his words, they were shocked and immediately retreated.
Some people even ran away, wanting to return to the underground palace.
Professor Feisel’s eyes betrayed his internal struggle. He also understood the danger ahead, but there were so many precious cultural relics in front of him, and he didn’t want to give up on them. This was worse than killing him.
He looked at Ian, hoping that he could think of a way.
“I’ll go down first to check the situation.”
Ian found a rope ladder in his backpack.
The rope ladder hung on a large rock protruding from the platform and hung down from the side of the platform. Both ends were fastened with strong safety locks.
After confirming the strength, Ian pulled the rope on his body to ensure that he would have no problem going down.
“Why don’t we wait for the other teams to rush over?” Aika suggested to Ian worriedly. The large hole below was too dangerous. After learning about the combination trap, she could tell it was even more dangerous.
Unfortunately, it was too late as Ian fumbled around on the platform.
From the black hole below, arrows shot out from God knew where.
The arrows’ sudden appearance generated a hair-raising sound as they pierced through the air.
Xiu! Xiu! Xiu!
Arrows as thick as a child’s arm flew one after another.
One could tell that the arrows contained a powerful force just from their speed alone.
They shot straight into the ground, and the sound of metal colliding echoed.
The arm-sized arrows shot deep into the ground.
After the huge arrows hit the ground, they made the ground quake slightly. Under the searchlight’s strong light, the arrows emitted a cold luster.
Hiss!
This terrifying scene made countless people feel a lingering fear.
They had just advanced a little when they were about to touch this trap.
Professor Feisel and the others were stunned. Were there so many traps inside?
The arrow that shot in front of Ian was less than ten centimeters away from him.
He could see the arrow slowly shaking.
Nonetheless, this terrifying trap did not seem to affect him at all.
The speed at which he tied the rope did not slow down.
“What kind of mental fortitude is this? If all archaeologists like us had Ian’s courage, we wouldn’t be hiding behind them.”
Professor Feissel’s lamentation made the students hiding behind him blush.
There was no other way. Comparing people was infuriating.
Ian did not even look at the weapon on the ground and walked straight over.
Then, he turned around and connected the rope to the archaeological safety lock.
What was more surprising was that the more dangerous part had yet to come.
Ian nodded at Aika before adjusting the position of the head-mounted searchlight.
His feet were wide open as he prepared to go down the hole.
It was only at the moment when he went down.
The searchlight’s light shone on the black hole’s wall.
It illuminated something that surprised Professor Feisel and the others.
“There are words! There are words on the wall of this black hole!”
The professor and the others were surprised by the new discovery not long after they went down.
“Hurry and focus the light on Ian!”
The students immediately turned the searchlight and shone it around the wall so that the professor and the others could see clearly.
Under the intense searchlight, they discovered that there were many words carved on the edge of the wall. They were densely packed ancient Egyptian words, and there were countless of them.
This discovery was no small matter. There were very few words in the entire ruins, including the temple and underground palace. Most of them were recorded in murals. He did not expect that there were so many ancient Egyptian words on this stone beam.
Words were the most basic symbol of human communication. The information that the ancient murals brought to people was an intuitive feeling. The information contained in words was more accurate. If he could decipher these words, there would be a lot fewer detours in understanding the ancient Egyptian civilization.
Professor Feissel quickly asked the students to take out the recording equipment and write down the ancient Egyptian words on the wall, part by part. Fortunately, the carved words were very large, so they could be recorded without getting close by using a searchlight. Aika was also taking pictures with her camera.
Only Ian had nothing to do at the moment, so he casually dismantled some of the mechanisms in the mausoleum.
Dong!
A huge falling rock bounced off the wall and hit the ground with a loud echo.
“What… What’s that sound?”
“Ian is dismantling the mechanisms at the bottom. Don’t stop. Write this down first.”
The professor did not even raise his head as he took pictures of the text.
Ian’s understanding of the mechanisms was completely admirable.
Now, after Ian dismantled all the mechanisms, he could go down to the depths of the black hole and look at the pile of buried goods.
This ancient civilization’s remains had not been stolen until now. One reason was that the pyramid was buried too deep, and there was no record of its location.
Another possibility was that the traps were too powerful. They had seen many white bones along the way, which might be what remained of the tomb raiders.
Professor Feissel was excited as he recorded. Even if this archaeological work ended here, his harvest could not be considered small. Just the well-preserved mural in the underground palace alone was enough to shock the archaeological world for two years, not to mention this bottomless pit.
Any one of them was enough for these intellectuals to study for a long time.
They only felt that this adventure was worth it.
As Ian continued to go deeper, he dismantled many traps, such as fire traps, pit traps, and poisonous smoke attacks, along the way.
An hour later, he was already standing at the bottom of the black hole smoothly.
He saw the searchlight stop at the north side of the hole, and there was a huge stone door.
“Is this the underground palace of the pyramid!?”
Ian looked at the huge stone door, his eyes filled with passion.
He had spent so much effort to come here for the system’s reward.
He carefully observed his surroundings.
Ian felt extremely small as he stood directly under this enormous black hole. This kind of special architectural situation was usually not man-made but formed naturally. It embodied the essence of ancient Egyptian architectural philosophy and technology and directly reflected the emperor’s political and ethical views.
The most important thing was that there was a huge piece of wood on the top of the stone door. This piece of wood was more than two meters in diameter, like the body of a large tree. It was directly cut off without any processing.
There were more than a dozen large iron chains tied to the trunk of the round tree. They were connected to the stone beams and fixed the huge tree to the ground.
‘This is…’
Ian looked at these things and fell into deep thought.
