Chapter 42: First the Kidney Then the Heart
The three of them waited outside the ward. Li Mu was very patient as well, squatting by the side as he chatted about unimportant topics with Lin Wu.
Lin Wu realized that this police officer was really easy-going, daring to talk about any topics, not caring that his niece was sitting right next to them. He kept on going with the lewd topics, and… they tended to be the more crude ones.
After quite a while, the doctor finally came out of the ward.
A nurse pushed out a movable hospital bed with Zhang Yuqing on it. Zhang Yuqing’s leg and neck had a layer of cast around them.
“Try not to get off the bed and move around. Stay in the hospital and rest for a while. After you are discharged, come back to take another scan in two months,” instructed the doctor. “If you guys wish for the patient to move, you can buy a walking cane or a wheelchair from the shops nearby.”
“You guys are arranging for a single room ward, right? Come with me.” The nurse looked at the three of them and then pushed the bed to a nearby ward.
Li Luyao was the one who paid for the hospitalization fees.
Although the single room of Su City’s General Hospital wasn’t cheap, it wasn’t as expensive as a room in a five-star hotel. Li Luyao, who came from a rich family, naturally wouldn’t care for this bit of money, nor did she need Lin Wu to put up an act and make a fuss over the payment. She took the initiative to pay for the bill.
A short moment later, the nurse pushed Zhang Yuqing to a single room ward and moved her onto the bed. After everything was taken care of, she turned to say to the trio, “Alright, the patient needs to have more rest. Be mindful of the time.”
After the nurse closed the door and left, Lin Wu looked at Zhang Yuqing, who was on the bed, and spoke up, “Zhang Yuqing, this is Officer Li. He has gotten an understanding of the case. You only need to tell him everything that you’ve seen and experienced.”
Zhang Yuqing bit her lips and nodded timidly.
Lin Wu turned to look at Li Mu. “Alright, Uncle Li, go ahead.”
Li Mu had told him to address him as Uncle Li. Since he was Li Luyao’s uncle, it wasn’t a problem for him to address him as Uncle Li.
“There’s no hurry.”
Li Mu shook his head and then asked with interest, “Rather than this case, there’s another question I’d like to ask you first… Do you know the girl involved in the car accident? Why did you only think of helping her after one month had passed?”
Li Luyao couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. She smiled wryly and said, “Uncle, why are you asking Lin Wu this? He’s helping you to crack the case, yet you’re questioning him?”
“I’m just asking. Of course, it’s fine even if you’re unwilling to answer,” said Li Mu while putting out his hands.
“Of course I know her. Pei Jianing is my dad’s student.”
Lin Wu said calmly, “As for why I waited until now to help her… It’s only because I didn’t know about the truth previously. It was only today that I found out from Zhang Yuqing that Pei Jianing didn’t die from a car accident. That’s why I got Luyao to contact you.”
“So that’s how it is.” Li Mu nodded and then turned to look toward Zhang Yuqing. “Is what he said the truth?”
Zhang Yuqing nodded timidly.
Although she didn’t understand why Lin Wu lied even though he knew about the truth behind Pei Jianing’s car accident and got her to be the witness, she had some guesses after having seen Pei Jianing’s spirit.
“I understand.”
Li Mu nodded and said, “Lin Wu, why don’t you go and buy a walking cane for her?”
“Alright.” Lin Wu threw a glance at Zhang Yuqing before turning to head out of the ward.
“Luyao, you stay behind to accompany her. I’ll go send Lin Wu off,” said Li Mu before following Lin Wu out.
The two men left the ward.
“Kacha.”
Li Mu closed the door behind him.
Lin Wu wasn’t in any hurry to leave, so he turned to look at Li Mu. He smiled and asked, “Uncle Li, is there anything you need to talk to me separately about?”
Li Mu fell silent for a moment before shaking his head and said, “It’s nothing. I just want to thank you.”
Lin Wu was stunned. Thank him?
He thought that Li Mu had noticed that something was amiss, and had asked him out to question him, suspicious of his motives.
“Why are you looking at me like that? You think that I’m suspecting you?”
Li Mu looked at him and then drew out a cigarette tucked behind his ear. He was about to light it when he paused, putting away the cigarette again.
“I’ve long since felt that there was a problem with this case.” Li Mu shook his head. “Putting aside the fact that the legs of the deceased didn’t look as if they had been broken from being knocked by a car’s bumper, there are also some suspicious points at the scene that haven’t been resolved. I’ve seen quite a number of car accident scenes over the years… After that lady died, the expression on her face wasn’t like it was a car accident…”
Lin Wu said, nodding, “That’s right, she felt great despair at the instant she was knocked over by the car…” When he saw Li Mu looking at him, he added, “After all, she had initially thought that the driver would save her, but hadn’t expected that not only did he not do that, but he even killed her.”
Li Mu frowned and said, “I heard from Li Luyao that the guy is called Meng He, right? He is Siqi’s ex-boyfriend.”
Siqi?
Lin Wu was struck with a realization. It seemed that Li Luyao’s cousin was called ‘Li Siqi.’
But then…
Pei Jianing had said that the person who knocked him down back then was a lady. Since it wasn’t Li Luyao… could it be the previous car owner, Li Siqi?
That was a possibility.
If this car had been stolen by someone he didn’t know, and the lock had been damaged, it was impossible for Li Luyao to not know about it. If even Li Luyao didn’t know about this, then it could be that the car’s previous owner, Li Siqi, had used the backup key to drive the car.
“What’s the matter?” Li Mu saw that Lin Wu’s expression was a little strange and couldn’t help but ask.
Lin Wu shook his head. “It’s nothing. I’m just a little worried about what will happen if the murderer isn’t apprehended.”
“As long as an arrest warrant is issued and the murderer hasn’t left the country or hide in secluded countryside, then it shouldn’t be a difficult task,” Li Mu said casually.
“Then I’ll have to trouble Uncle Li.” Lin Wu nodded. “The car that I’m driving now was the one that the murderer had used. Do you need me to provide it as evidence?”
“Even if you offer it, we wouldn’t dare to accept it.” Li Mu smiled. “You just need to drive it over when we’ve caught the murderer and need him to identify the car. ”
Lin Wu smiled and nodded, saying, “Alright, I understand. I’ll do my best to cooperate.”
“Oh, right. There’s one more thing,” said Li Mu.
“What?” Lin Wu looked at him.
Li Mu glanced at him and said, smiling, “Luyao is my brother’s precious daughter. You must treat her well. I don’t care if your relationship is real or not, but don’t make her sad. Understand?”
“…”
Lin Wu was slightly stunned, then he said helplessly, “This dumb lass… You still saw through it.”
“Forget it, you didn’t put up a great act yourself.” Li Mu let out a stifled smile and then shook his head. “I’ve played around with a lot of women. The moment I saw the two of you acting so awkwardly, not showing any hint of familiarity with each other, I could tell that you haven’t even gotten to the first base. How can you possibly be showing off affection like this?”
“Cough. I’m a gentleman.” Lin Wu coughed.
“How could men possibly be gentlemen?” Li Mu’s smile made Lin Wu feel like beating him up. Li Mu got closer and then said softly, “I don’t dislike you, so I’ll tell you this. My brother is very traditional. If you can get into her bed, it’d be easy to clinch her.”
Lin Wu was a little speechless. Where would you find an uncle like him who would ask an outsider to take down his own niece?
Toward such a shameless and lewd relative, he just wanted to say——
Please send more of them over!
“Uncle Li, I’m not a loose man…”
“Men would be inhuman if they are loose. I’m only asking you to work first on the kidney [1] then on the heart. I’m not asking you to let her down. Is there any difference to the end result?”
“… Is she really related to you by blood?”
