Happy Birthday (1)
When So-hee first came to this mansion, she couldn’t hide her absurdity. It was a pitch-dark foggy night when she arrived on horseback in this rural town of Latvea City. The weather was cool even though the plants had already sprouted. She wanted to lie down immediately after riding all day while shivering from the cold. Upon entering the huge mansion, she felt relieved that she had finally arrived.
“Deon, why is the mansion so dark?”
In addition, the room’s temperature was lower than the outside. After Deon lit the candlesticks he found, Sohee looked around the luxurious furniture and caught a chill. So-hee was shocked upon touching one table with her forefinger. Dust was smeared all over it as if the house hadn’t been managed for a long time.
“Is there no one here?”
When orange light shone brightly on Deon’s face, he wore a shy and awkward smile. This was one fact that So-hee had overlooked. Deon was an impulsive character who didn’t really think about the future. It was funny how Sohee expected to stay in a perfectly set mansion after following him there. Nevertheless, he didn’t really say anything wrong.
‘Ari, live with me. I’ve built a mansion in the suburbs over there just for you.’
Deon did say he had built a country house for Ariad somewhere out there but he didn’t exactly state that the mansion was clean and warm. He even swore to throw away the dukedom, his business, and his followers just for her. How could he be willing to leave everything behind including the servants that should have been there to take care of him? He must be a man-of-his word, huh? So-hee chuckled while stroking the goosebumps on her arms.
When Deon noticed her amusement, Deon hurriedly added. “Ari, don’t worry. I’ll hire some servants soon, and if we hold out for today———-”
“You didn’t throw away the money, did you?”
“I brought the money.”
“That’s a relief.”
He must have fetched her in a hurry, so it must have been hard for him to think about their future in detail. She must thank him for not forgetting about money.
Deon brought the firewood himself and lit the fireplace. He looked clumsy because he had never done this before, but the result wasn’t bad. Ariad shook off the dust from the blanket as hard as she could before going to sleep. When she lay down on the bed, she was still shaking because the cold still hadn’t disappeared despite the warmth from the fireplace Then, the man who had been watching Ariad moved closer and embraced her to share his body heat.
“I’ll go out to find someone to work for us soon as the sun rises.”
The tactless and impulsive man suddenly looked different. From Ariad’s perspective, he showed some good values each passing time. Even as she fell asleep, So-hee muttered, “Thank you, Deon.”
The next morning, another unexpected variable came out of nowhere. Deon’s face, which she had seen as soon as he woke up, was colored with worries about their future. His brows were furrowed in concern.
“We are in the countryside, so there’s no one to work for us. I think I’ll have to get out of here for a while to find one but I can’t leave you here alone.” He growled as if he hated the thought of her alone. Come to think of it. She had been hungry for quite a long time. She was also pregnant so she couldn’t keep starving like this. Reminding herself that she wasn’t alone in her own body no more, Deon lifted a paper bag of food supplies from the floor.
“Ari, don’t worry. First, I’ll make you breakfast.”
So-hee contemplated as she looked back on her decisions with courage. More than anything, she was most worried about now. Despite her heavy belly, So-hee got up and rushed after Deon. When she arrived in the dusty kitchen, Deon was putting ingredients on the table.
“Wait!”
“What?”
“I’m not going to eat dust, so shouldn’t we wipe the table off before putting the food there?”
“Right.”
With a rag from somewhere, Deon diligently removed the dust. Sohee looked at his sloppy movements and sighed. She also couldn’t cook but she thought it would be better if she could cook some ramen herself. Such anxiety continued and culminated in Deon’s spectacular fire show after almost burning the whole house down.

It was correct to say that if one would leave the house, one would suffer a lot. She thought everything would be solved once Deon found someone to work for the at the mansion, but it wasn’t. Few offered to work in this rural village, and even a few of them freaked out after seeing the huge mansion. In the beginning, she had to chew some food raw without cooking it. However, humans were good at adapting. Deon took the responsibility of taking good care of her and did it well. His clumsy mopping became perfect after a few weeks, and the food that tasted like trash became edible, if not exceptionally delicious. Due to Deon’s efforts, the messy mansion gradually became habitable.
