58. Where did it go wrong (1)
Kelly was lying on a large bed. It had been half a day since she had put on her thick bridal makeup. While in this state, the time quickly passed into midnight as she repeatedly walked around the bed from early evening until she lay down, tossing and turning on the bed. The clock’s second hand ticked in the room, filling the silence. Kelly jumped up and smoothed the hem of her thin slip. She couldn’t just stay like this. Kelly left the room and headed to the third floor where the crown prince would be. When she reached the stairs, she was stopped for a minute. Somebody asked why she was visiting him in the office, which triggered something in her. Before she knew it, she turned the door handle and immediately saw her reflection in the office window. Joshua was lying on his stomach under the orange light. He didn’t raise his head, not noticing Kelly was right there. He must have fallen asleep in that uncomfortable position. She swallowed hard and drew closer to the desk. His sagging left hand was holding a glass of wine. Kelly couldn’t stop the urge from brushing his dark, silky locks with her fingertips. Soon, her slow and careful touch descended to his beautiful side profile. Joshua’s pale cheeks glistened under the light. His skin felt warm as the kiss they shared that morning. Becoming greedier, Kelly moved closer to him but her sudden movement sent a white drawing paper on the left side of the desk to fall down. As it fell to the floor, the front and back of the canvas got flipped. Kelly stared blankly at what was no longer a blank sheet. It was a painting of Ariad. Ariad, who was no longer in the Imperial City, would never be seen again but this man still longed for her. Kelly bent over and picked up the picture. At that moment, Joshua’s blurry gaze swept Kelly from head to toe when he raised his head. With furrowed brows, Joshua straightened his spine and leaned against the backrest. Without asking any questions, Joshua picked up the glass he was holding in his left hand and drank it like water. To get rid of the awkward silence, Kelly began. “I thought you’d want to be with me on the first night.”
Many eyes were already watching them so her concern was only natural. If a married man and woman spent the first night separately, all kinds of gossip would soon follow. They should have been more careful since there was already a rumor spreading about the crown prince not getting over his cheating ex-wife and spending every day and every night drinking alcohol. However, all of this was just an excuse for Kelly, who was waiting for Joshua to go to bed. She just wanted to be him.
“I’m busy with my work.”
Ridiculous words were uttered as an excuse as Joshua sat in his alcohol-scented office. Kelly’s hand clenched on the painting in her hand, her remaining reason flying out of the window. Kelly’s lips quivered as she spat.
“You married me so you must do your duty as my husband.”
Joshua brushed his exhausted face with both hands.
“Miss Kelly, do you think I married you because I wanted to?”
“You already made the choice so take responsibility for it.”
Dumbfounded, Joshua chuckled, put down his glass, and raised himself. As he drew nearer, a huge shade covered Kelly.
“What should I do?” He smelled of strong alcohol. He looked fine, but his deep baritone sounded a bit drunk. “What can I do to keep you from bothering me?”
The words made Kelly furious. He was a perfect gentleman on their first meeting. How can he switch up like this? Kelly tossed the painting in her hand in front of her and blurted out.
“You could at least respect me as your wife, Joshua.” Her voice trembled slightly, but she was able to complete the sentence safely. “I feel so bad for doing this.”
There was a sharp sound in the quiet space. As Ariad’s face was half torn, Joshua hurriedly grabbed Kelly’s two wrists. Kelly kept trying to tear the painting but she was trembling violently from the disturbing force. He held her wrists so hard that the blood wouldn’t flow. Her hands paled. Why would he go so far with just one painting? Kelly’s eyes widened. She felt like she could cry at any moment, but she tried her best to suppress her tears. Tears flowed down her cheeks one by one before they poured out of control.
“Will you keep this a family treasure for the rest of your life? Tens of thousands of people would be asking about your behavior, Joshua.”
Kelly raised her voice even more as Joshua’s heavy voice was clearly heard.
“Let go. You’re hurting me.”
